Sorry twochai, not Tamanrasset. Aviate was a BIT closer but still a long way away.
|
If you flew to here from aviate1138's suggestion in Warmtoast's hypothetical aircraft a few posts above, this complete nonprofessional calculates that having refuelled to the brim once on the way, you would land with your tanks around 30% full.
Looking at my original photo, just out of shot to the right is a terminal which looks like this from the land side: http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...r/Terminal.jpg |
Tangiers? Only ever been in the dark so it really is a stab :O:O
|
Its not in Africa. The airport serves a city which is, according to different sources, the second or third oldest in the country. The local population doubles in their summer with visitors attracted by the natural facilities - I wouldn't mind being there now to give my chillblains a chance to heal up!
The national airline has four scheduled flights each day to the capital city in its Local Area Network. |
La Florida, Chile?
Rgds AAO |
That's the one AAO, over to you!
|
It was the LAN clue that did it..... :}

Llamas in abundance, Ford Trimotor, arid semi-desert terrain, volcano in the background.
Looks like it could be Arequipa, Peru? |
Next time I must look a bit harder..... try & find something that'll last longer than 43 minutes! :}
twochai, well done & over to you :ok: Rgds AAO |
Next time I must look a bit harder..... try & find something that'll last longer than 43 minutes! A little remembered feature of the Ford Trimotor was its 'Johnson bar' hydraulic braking control system - a long pole sprouting out of the floor which one pulled aft through a two or three foot arc for symmetric braking, while continuing to use the rudder pedals for directional brake control! Like the contemporary British pneumatic brake control (with the press-to-brake lever between the 'spectacles') but not as intuitive. That was probably a Faucett Airlines Trimotor; a great little airline in its day, at least while still in operation in the early seventies with BAC 1-11-475's and B727-100's. Sorry, nothing worth contributing comes immediately to hand, so: OPEN HOUSE |

Very wild guess..... Livingstone?
Rgds AAO |
Sorry, not Livingstone. Not a bad guess.
|
Another wild guess at Vic Falls then?
Rgds AAO |
Sorry, not Victoria Falls. Not in Africa.
|
How about South America? Chile maybe?
|
Sorry, John. not in South America.
|
Somewhere in India?
Rgds AAO |
Yes. Somewhere in India.
|
The people / aircraft ratio seems a bit too high.
Some sort of state / official visit going on? Would 1956 be about the correct year? Rgds AAO |
Photo circa 1958. Civilian airliner. Don't know if it is a special flight.
|
Goa Dabolim
Rgds AAO PS, 17th March 1958? :} |
And if that's not right and I am sure it is, how about:
Trivandrum International Airport |
AAO is spot on:ok:. aka. Vasco da Gama Airport, Goa, located on the lovely southwest coast of India. A joint military-civilian airport originally built by the Potuguese, and now run by the Indian Airports Authority. You have control.

Thanks.
Must pass any credit onto Google though :D The next one; http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ts/where-1.jpg Rgds AAO |
Hmmm... looks like a Dines Pressure Tube anemometer on top of the tower, likely to be somewhere in the extended 'Raj' then?

The first 2 are withinv the max range of Warmtoast's hypothethical aircraft, from the subject airfield. Rgds AAO |
