Aquaba, Jordan?

Duckbutt 6th Dec 2008 12:44

Neither of those although aviate is a bit closer than Tiger_Mate.

In which case, I would suggest Tamanrasset? If true, its been polished up a little since I last transited through there twenty five years ago, not surprisingly.

Duckbutt 6th Dec 2008 15:03

Sorry twochai, not Tamanrasset. Aviate was a BIT closer but still a long way away.

Duckbutt 7th Dec 2008 10:02

If you flew to here from aviate1138's suggestion in Warmtoast's hypothetical aircraft a few posts above, this complete nonprofessional calculates that having refuelled to the brim once on the way, you would land with your tanks around 30% full.

Looking at my original photo, just out of shot to the right is a terminal which looks like this from the land side:

Tangiers? Only ever been in the dark so it really is a stab :O:O

Duckbutt 8th Dec 2008 08:19

Its not in Africa. The airport serves a city which is, according to different sources, the second or third oldest in the country. The local population doubles in their summer with visitors attracted by the natural facilities - I wouldn't mind being there now to give my chillblains a chance to heal up!

The national airline has four scheduled flights each day to the capital city in its Local Area Network.

La Florida, Chile?

Llamas in abundance, Ford Trimotor, arid semi-desert terrain, volcano in the background.

Looks like it could be Arequipa, Peru?

AfgAirOps 8th Dec 2008 15:27

Next time I must look a bit harder..... try & find something that'll last longer than 43 minutes! :}

twochai, well done & over to you :ok:

You must admit, AAO, you left a long trail of clues for those with a dull memory, and Arequipa is indeed a memorable airport site.:ok:

A little remembered feature of the Ford Trimotor was its 'Johnson bar' hydraulic braking control system - a long pole sprouting out of the floor which one pulled aft through a two or three foot arc for symmetric braking, while continuing to use the rudder pedals for directional brake control! Like the contemporary British pneumatic brake control (with the press-to-brake lever between the 'spectacles') but not as intuitive. That was probably a Faucett Airlines Trimotor; a great little airline in its day, at least while still in operation in the early seventies with BAC 1-11-475's and B727-100's.

Sorry, nothing worth contributing comes immediately to hand, so:

Yes. Somewhere in India.

The people / aircraft ratio seems a bit too high.

Some sort of state / official visit going on?

Would 1956 be about the correct year?

And if that's not right and I am sure it is, how about:

Trivandrum International Airport

evansb 9th Dec 2008 18:57

AAO is spot on:ok:. aka. Vasco da Gama Airport, Goa, located on the lovely southwest coast of India. A joint military-civilian airport originally built by the Potuguese, and now run by the Indian Airports Authority. You have control.

AfgAirOps 9th Dec 2008 19:29

Thanks.

Must pass any credit onto Google though :D

Karachi, Pakistan?

Not Yangon, Karachi or Kallang.

The first 2 are withinv the max range of Warmtoast's hypothethical aircraft, from the subject airfield.
