Hawk yes, but not UK.
|
I see some HASs so can I assume military and near continent perhaps?
|
The Netherlands somewhere?
|
Not the Netherlands, nor an immediate neighbour.
|
White car in the foreground, driving on the right - doesn't tell us anything we don't know already. The tracks look like exposed chalk - so maybe: a smallish military aerodrome in a chalk region of (northern?) France.
The sun appears to be relatively high to left of picture, so the runway's roughly east-west. I'm off to Google Earth! Reims - Champagne? |
Correct with Reims. Variably mil/civ or just military. Over to BAMRA.
|
Thanks BN, I'm off to work so open house.
|
Where's this?
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c3...2/WA19Sept.jpg ( I couldn't find a higher resolution than this.) |
Is it an old RAF base ?
|
I would guess not in the UK because of the hangar types and v long straight road/field layout. My guess would be US/Canadian but then what do I know...........looks prairie flat to me............
|
...........looks prairie flat to me............ Not an RAF base and not in North America. |
Is it a very old picture of Hanoi Noi Bai?
|
Slim,
I can see why you might think that, but not Noi Bai |
Early Kabul?
|
Kuala Lumpur ?
|
Only a dedicated aviation historian is likely to get this one. I can't even work out what's what! Are those two roads at right angles and a grass strip to the left? The bigger 'hangars' appear to face that way.
If so, maybe an early biplane factory - Japan, China, with rice grown nearby? |
Not EK or KL, not Japan or China.
with rice grown nearby? C in C's inspection 1916: http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c3...42/WA21Sep.jpg Can someone ID the biplanes? Are those two roads at right angles and a grass strip to the left? |
Hmmm....
India perhaps? I can't work out whether that's coast, sea and horizon at the top right, or just a faded area on the print! |
Nothing to do with the Raj, although this air force did participate in WWI.
Correction: the date of the inspection is post-1919, since that was the service date of the biplanes, which are Breguet 14s. The airfield is well inland - no sea or lakes nearby. |
OK if the aircraft are French it is likely to be somewhere in Vietnam.
Da Nang? |
I am out on that limb with WAINODEN, POLAND ???? Keith.
|
For all the rice in Poland, I think the photograph is of the old Don Muang airfield in Bangkok, (Krung Thep), Thailand, (Siam).
|
Russia, Engels near Stalingrad........
|
Kiev (Ukraine)?
|
Googling Don Muang shows similarities in canals on NW-SE sides of airfield, although the grass appears to have been cut !!
|
And the winner is .....
I've just woken up to a plethora of possible answers that I never would have thought of. This was a much more difficult challenge than I expected it to be.
And the winner is ..... (as usual) ----- evansb :ok: RTAF Don Muang, NE of Bangkok. It used to be BKK International, until Suvanabuhmi opened. Some more information and old pictures here: The Royal Thai Air Force [eng] : : History of The Royal Thai Air Force and some more info here, including a nice picture of a Breguet 14, which I hadn't heard of before: thaishortstories.***/2007/12/briefer-history-of-royal-thai-airforce.html For ***, substitute b l o g s p o t . c o m (with no spaces). I have to make time to go to the museum, next time I'm in Bangkok :) As Sycamore points out, the distinctive road and canal pattern is very obvious on Google Earth: http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c3...donmuangGE.jpg It is interesting that this (NW) side of the airport is now the civil side. The present day military section is out of frame to the left on the other side of 21L. My next clue was going to be about QANTAS and golf courses: http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c3...a42/VH-OJH.jpg |
I'll have to spend some time finding an aerodrome photo as challenging as Simon's last. In the mean time, this one will have to do:
http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r.../WAD080921.jpg |
bri,
Somewhere in the US, but otherwise no clue. I hope there are some hangar doors at the far end, otherwise there will be a severe production line bottle-neck! I've just noticed one of my URLs, which worked properly in preview, has been censored. So for those of you who want to see the Breguet 14, here is a DIY version: thaishortstories.***/2007/12/briefer-history-of-royal-thai-airforce.html For ***, substitute b l o g s p o t . c o m (with no spaces). Note, this blog is perfectly work safe - it's not about THOSE kind of Thai short stories.;) |
Cleveland Hopkins (KCLE)
or Detroit (Yipsilanti) Willow Run (KYIP) C2j |
Ref Don Mueng. There can't be many airfields with a golf course between the runways. I once had a golf ball bounce in front of the aircraft while taxying! Still no excuse to go and park on it though!
|
Still no excuse to go and park on it though! And as an SLF going in to Don Muang for the first time on 21L, those ponds in the undershoot gave me the distinct impression we were going for a swim  |
C2j is correct:ok: The Ford plant at Detroit/Willow Run (Yipsilanti, Michigan), was once the largest building in the world. Ford produced the B-24 Liberator bomber at Willow Run. You have control.
|
I'm sorry guys, I can resist anything but temptation, and these pics are just too tempting! I'm not prepared with a pic.
OPEN HOUSE! C2j |
|
The runway layout suggests Fleet Air Arm.
|
Not Fleet Air Arm. Airfield was originally civilian but for a long time has been partly used by the military.
|
This was taken during the construction of the first terminal:
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...er/Puzz20b.jpg |
Is that a Koolhoven F.K. 50 in the background?
|
Looks more like another Short Scion which used to live in Acebell's Redhill hangar , so I'd say Palestine Airlines and maybe a bit of sly rearrangement of the reggies?
|
Good aircraft recognition Max! Sly, moi?
