Mildenhall late '30s.

By googling "Bristol Bombay _images "
one gets to : "14th August 1939: Soldiers of the 2nd Battalion of Royal Ulster Rifles disembarking from a Bristol Bombay aircraft at RAF Yatesbury during one of the largest aerial troop-carrying movements in Britain. The men are bound for manoeuvres on Salisbury Plain." |
My excuse is I identified the hangar as a T2; ridiculous really as they were a wartime construction; I don't know the designation of the domed roof hangar at Yatesbury but it was still there about 10 years ago.
Hmm 14 August '39 eh? Poland was invaded 1 Sep 39. Did someone know something? I know Churchill was warning everyone having read his memoirs, but no-one was taking much notice were they? |
RETDPI has it exactly right, Yatesbury it is in 1939 - and I thought it would be hard!
Over to you RETDPI |
Thanks Warmtoast!
As you will have seen I really didn' t have a clue myself!:O Having a pool party at the moment whilst we watch the local airborne celebrations of the first flight of the Harvard. I'll post in a couple of hours. |
O.K.
This photograph was taken around the same time as that of the previous challenge........ http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...edrome0001.jpg |

Nah second thoughts - Luton Airport (in a Lorraine Chase accent)
|
Chevvron. Luton Airport mate!! :ok:
When Edgar Percival built his class machines and when you could walk across fields to get there. 'Twas even thus in the 50's when RETDPI's dad worked there. Over to you - and well done! |
Course I should have qualified that as it's not the original Luton Airport (Barton) where the Luton Minor was conceived! It was that double hangar in the centre that gave it away - still there I think.
I haven't got access to software to post so once again Open House. |
About the same era
|
Jenkins you too must be an ex-Brat. Halton House in the background is a give-away.
!948 52nd entry engine running as quoted "a bit rich mixture". Notice the fire bottles in front of the aircraft all left to their own devices with all the brave brats doing a runner. I have got subsequent pictures if anybody is interested. It's all yours Jenkins |
I'll try again. Back to my youth

Pure Guess - Odiham?

How about Strubby?
|
Or even Gütersloh ?

Ashill Wood in the background?

Must be Watton then ? Keith.

Ashill Wood in the background? |
Thought so!
It is RAF Merryfield, the picture must have been taken in around 1953. The woods in the background were regularly shot by a local organised shoot - my father and his business partner used to wait for the birds to cross the aerodrome fence and then bag a pair of pheasants each before legging it! Here's another one for you, not too difficult I would imagine: Austin 1100 and Morris Oxford Ser. IV? Edited to blur the numberplates on the Landrover and the registrations of the Carvair and Ambassador to make it a little more challenging. |

Bristol Airport?
1965, Ambassador G-ALFR? Rgds AAO |
Hmm. Lulsgate Eh?
Quite a long day out in the tumbril for you to get that photo, Beags.:E |
AAO, yes, it is indeed Lulsgate!
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...rnet/zxzxz.jpg Photo was taken in 1965 (not by me though). Dan Dare Ambassador was G-ALFR and Aer Linctus Carvair was EI-AMP. I remember Lulsgate from slightly earlier days when Doves, Herons, Pionairs and the brand new Fokker Friendship were using it. Had my first flight ever from Lulsgate in 1962 in Piper Carribean G-ARDS - which is still on a current CofA! It was a posh new aeroplane for the Bristol and Wessex Aeroplane Club in those days! You have the helm! |
Thanks for the info :ok:
The next one, picture from Google Earth (obviously); http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...tts/noname.jpg Rgds AAO |
[gom mode] What does it say in post one about Google Earth photos again?
[/gom mode] With the greatest respect of course. |

You've spoilt my impending clue about Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory :} Rgds AAO |
Habbaniyah
Trying to remember if the new runway a few miles away was also known as Habbaniyah
|
That is the original RAF Habbaniyah, site of 4FTS' defence of Iraq. The camp layout is still almost recognisable as RAF. The plateau airfield just SE is now called Taqaddum,
Tony Dudgeon, who died about 4 years ago, was CO of the FTS in the war when it was regarded as a bit of a rest tour until the Iraqi Air Force had a go at them. He attended the 90th anniversary dinner and his tales - including methods of finding the airfield at night - were spellbinding. There is an interesting Habbaniyah site here RAF Habbaniyah Association |
Isn't it an early 'C' type hangar ie before the 'hipped roof' design was introduced? (I think there are still some at Abingdon or Upavon)
|
Here is the next "Which Aerodrome?":

Gebel Tarik maybe?
|
Sorry, not Gebel Tarik, Gibraltar. Go east.
|
RAF Shaibah, mesopotamia?
|
Sorry, not RAF Shaibah. Right country though.
|
How about Shaibah's nr neighbour of RAF Basrah? I'm pretty certain it's not RAF Hinaidi...............
