Lumbumbashi with a Yarpie Sabre & Dragon on the ramp?
Shoot no, might even be Luanda? Or even Swakopmund? Didn't Anglo American have a few Sabres? Shoot I'm lost but have the picture in me data bank, sod it! |
Kinshasa, Zaire.
|
Well, it's coming up to 6 days and 1338 views ? very good answers, but none correct yet ? I have found the original photo, but not the owners name, who I would like to credit !
So below is the complete picture, will this help ???? Keith. ps ... one person, who has posted within this, has mentioned recently that he has been there ????? http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/i...e/where13a.jpg |
BAMRA wake up, Sorry your post arrived whilst I was formulating my last post !
Yes it is Kinshasa !!! N'djili airport !!! My geography puts it in The Democratic Republic of the Congo ! But the names and places in Africa change far too often recently ? You deserve one of these :D Looking forward to your next challenge ! Keith. |
Keith, you are of course correct, 'Zaire' was used from 1971 to 1997.
Next challenge, UK/parochial in comparison to your last. Historic in the sense that it was part of our recent industrial history. Still useable in emergencies and a handy touch and go location. Should be familiar to some twotter jockeys from the 1970's! http://i445.photobucket.com/albums/q...equiz/quiz.jpg |
Flotta, Scapa Flow, in the Orkneys, if I'm not mistaken.
Had a great heave in the middle, if memory serves. |
Got it in one twochai!

Which Airfield Lists.
List updated today.

Thank you Mel. I hope all your work maintaining the lists does not go unrewarded or unrecognised!

BEagle,
Sorry, Not Fiji. BSD. |
Trincomalee Sri Lanka
|
Tempsford,
Absolutely right! I think at the time it was called Koggalah lake by the RAF. How on earth did you get it so quickly? I'm dead impressed. BSD. |
Actually my first guess was Trincomalee, but I thought that the trees weren't quite correct!
|
This makes three times that Trincomalee has been posted.
|
Open house folks
twas pure fluke BSD, looks like BEagle was the first to get it anyway. Temps |
I hadn't realised Trincomalee was Koggalah lake. In fact, the photo is also described by another name as well.
Here is another Sunderland, different location, still in use today, but I doubt whether the seaplane base is still in use. Not Ceylon/Sri Lanka. BSD. http://i374.photobucket.com/albums/o...underland4.jpg |
RAF Seletar?
|
Tempie,
Good try. It isn't Seletar though. However, I like your thinking. This was a 205squadron Sunderland, which spent a lot of time after the Japanese surrender flying between Seletar and Sri Lanka/India repatriating British POWs from Changi, when the MOs deemed them well enough to travel. They continued home from India by ship. Now back to this photo: the airfield is on the list, so if seeing it again offends anyone, then I apologise. At the time this Sunderland was photographed however, the present runway did not exist. Off to work, BSD. |
RAF Car Nicobar
|
Gan? As I don't know how long the runway has been there.
|
Alas neither Car Nicobar nor Gan.
BSD. |
If the photograph is in fact a Sunderland on a ferry trip with POW's
to Sri Lanka it could be a refuelling stop at Pennang. Trinco and Koggala are two different locations |
Hold the front page....just found the photograph on page 117 in Ken Delve's book, Short Sunderland.
He tells us it is a Mk. 5 of 205 Squadron at Koggala 1945, if correct, open house |
Just back from a night flight.
looks like I've cocqued this up if Trinco and Koggala are not the same. Whoops! The first picture was Koggala, so I may have inadvertently posted a new one! The second is not Penang. One of the earlier suggestions from Real Slim is very close. Off to bed, will check later. BSD. |
A thousand apologoes to you all.
It is in fact Diego Garcia, which I had not realised was originally RAF Gan. Thus, the Real Slim Shady cracked it a while ago. Sorry about that. Should have paid more attention in Geography/politics/current affairs etc. BSD. |
It is in fact Diego Garcia, which I had not realised was originally RAF Gan. Err, no. Diego Garcia is about 400 nm south of Gan! Anyway, whilst you wait for whoever got it right, here's a quickie to keep you going: http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...ernet/af-1.jpg |
Might be Leeming, looking at the ATC tower from the end of 34.

Strawberry ?

This makes three times that Trincomalee has been posted The airfield and flying boat alighting area was originally called RAF China Bay and in 1939 was the home to 273 Sqn equipped with rather ancient Vildebeests. Control of RAF China Bay was handed over to the Royal Navy in 1944 when it assumed the title "RNAS Trincomalee". In 1947 the airfield was handed back to the RAF and reverted once again to it's original title of "RAF China Bay". The RAF departed China Bay in late 1957 when the airfield was handed over to the Sri Lanka airforce. Strictly speaking photos appearing in Which Aerodrome under the heading "Trincomalee" should be of 1944 - 47 vintage, any others will be of RAF China Bay (and I have many). http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r...ChinaBay-1.jpg |
Regarding BSD's second Sunderland photo I'd have gone for Gan, because I took a similar photo of a Sunderland at Gan in 1958 which has certain similarities. See below.
http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r...landP-Copy.jpg But given as it's not Gan I'll guess BSD's second Sunderland was at Male, capital of the Maldives. |
What a bl**dy shambles! Trinco is not China Bay and I seem to remember that Koggala was on the west coast south of Colombo.
As for Gan being Diego Garcia; I am very glad that you were not my navigator when heading for Gan! Why don't we have an "identify the palm trees behind the Sunderland" competition? |
I'll go for Royal Palms then:E
|
Neither was the answer to mine Shawbury, Leeming nor Inverness!
|
Morning all,
Just back from another night in the sky, and still smarting with embarassment over the huge cocque-up I've made of this. Shame, as I was thrilled with finding the two photos. Warmtoast's photo of "P Peter" is a cracker! Just to confirm, the first picture was Koggala, the second Diego Garcia, and yes it is a darned good job I was never a navigator. Apologies to one and all, BSD. |
BEagle: is the airfield in England or Wales?(I'm thinking welsh border)
|
BEagle's Challenge.
Is there a quiet corner like this at Harwarden ? Keith.
|
Neither Welsh borders nor Whore-den.......
|
Aha,Merryfield ?
