I think this aerodrome has featured previously, but this photo dates from 1972, and hopefully the moderators will allow it. However, I don't think it will last long anyway!

Dushanbe or Kazan,Tajikistan?

Good progress gentlemen. Jenkins, it is indeed in the heart of Great Game Country but not, I regret to have to tell you SABREDOG, either Dushanbe or Kazan.Much earlier, Genghis Khan and Tamerlane visited. The tangible legacy of one of these visitors still survives.

Samarkand ?

Not Samarkand but you are within 300 miles. The tangible legacy of Tamerlane in a previous clue shares some features with the Registan in Samarkand but on a much smaller scale. The position from which the photo was taken is visible at high resolution on Google Earth.

Tashkent then?

Herat or Ghaznii Airport ?

Sorry Gentlemen but neither of those options, I am afraid. The Runway in question is orientated 06/24, is 1650 metres long and 42 metres wide. The NDB
( which is out of view behind the control tower) had the identifier 'TS' on frequency 415 kHz.

Finally we are in the territory of the Great Horde.

It seems to be just to the east of Turkestan and to the south east of Chubanak at 43 19' 09.59"N 68 23' 45.29"E

It is, in fact, Turkistan Airport.A short word of explanation.Dating from the era when Kazakhstan was part of Soviet Central Asia it enjoyed services to Shymkent,Tashkent and Kyzylorda. There are plans to restore and extend the present site since Turkistan is the location of what is arguably Kazakhstan's most historic site - the Mausoleum of Kozha Akhmed Yasaui,a Turkic Moslem figure of considerable importance.The Mausoleum - which was built by Tamerlane in the 14th Century - has been restored with Turkish funding and the Turkistan University has a sizeable Turkish contingent.The mosaic detail of the Mausoleum is similar to that of the Registan, Samarkand.What complicates things is that the TPC F 6 - D Chart of 31 March 1992 ( which I believe to be the latest available) correctly locates the NDB . However the actual position of the airfield is displaced by around 10nM. Surprisingly, Google Earth has adopted the incorrect TPC position for its airfield marker.Fortunately the photo position ( N43 18.56 42 E68 24.06 86) shows up well on Google Earth before the definition is reduced around one third down the runway.
