That's the "Varela" I think - a WW1 hospital ship built at Swan Hunter on Tyneside as a passenger cargo ship and converted. I think she served well after WW2 after being converted back to civvy service. I've a picture of the "Karoa" built around the same time and also converted to a hospital ship but in WW2

Yes this ship could have taken you to many places including Basra - and possibly The Yemen but sadly neither are the exact location for the challenge. You have identified the Varela correctly. I suggest that you and any other interested parties research the services that it operated in the Inter War Years. Incidentally that blue and white pennant and the costume in the previous image should give you a very slight clue as to the region in which to conduct your search.
