Was it therefore the British Anzani inverted V-twin?

Not Anzani, but a V twin. The description that I have of the aircraft does not mention whether or not its inverted, although from its appearance I would assume it is.

The engine manufacturer is on that list....the engine is quite well known and has been used in many different aircraft types.

I have to go out at 1200 and will be busy for the rest of the day....I will be able to check messages but infrequently.

So to help you to get it before then.....engine power output was 18hp, although some sources quote 16hp. Identifying the engine is (in my view) the key to identifying the aircraft.

Good Morning Genlemen,

Well, I might as well rule one of those manufacturers out or in. I think the engine is a Blackburne Tomtit, and on that basis all I've found so far that are not ruled out by the clues given is the possibility of the Akaflieg Darmstadt D-13 Mohammed II. I cannot find any drawings and the only picture so far shows the centre fuselage under construction, it does have the fairing behind the pilot's head, but that's about all. Not much time to search today, so your answers may help someone else to find it.

Edited to say I also found the Wheeler Slymph, made in Iraq, but no details found. Back to work now.

Morning Sinco....a good deduction on the engine, it is a Blackburne Tomtit .

But its not the D-13 or Wheeler Slymph. Not a German (or Iraqi) aircraft. A quick search for the engine should find it!

..and it used the same engine, "The power plant consisted of two-cylinder inverted V-type engine "Blackburn" 18 ABC capacity of 18 hp" (Google translation from G-5)?

Gotta go shortlly.....will be a few hours before I can check-in....

More clues:
- first flew 1927
- appeared at the Berlin air show in 1928 or 29 (seen both dates quoted).
- one of a series of aircraft by this manufacturer
- held an altitude world record for its class at the time.

Nice one Graeme...you let the others do all the work and jump in with the answer. Yes it is the Buryevestnik S-4 . Here it is at Berlin, with its tail in a funny position:

I thought it would go very quickly once the engine was identified. It comes up with it on Google when you do a search for the Blackburne Tomtit!

All yours mate.

Closing down now guys...catch you later.

Easy. As Ken said, you people did all the hard work, I happened along and punched "Blackburn Tomtit Russian" into Mr Google and the rest is history as they say. I didn't even know if it was a plane or an engine. LOL.

My latest creation, all in 5 minutes David......May I present Mr Potato Head!...
