Thanks teusje....an excellent but frustrating challenge. I looked at the PW-3 early yesterday evening but of course it was the standard aircraft pictured in Aerofiles, so I moved on. But your clue later on lead me back to it for a closer inspection!

I think the cowling is very "Miles" looking or at least "Gipsy" looking.
I don't believe it's german :the Hirth cowlings had not this look .
Could it be Italian ? Many Italian planes were impressed in the Luftwaffe after September 1943 ...

I wouldn't know LM, but even so the image may be mirrored? Not now sure its a modified Magister. The nose topline looks a little too flat, there's more of a slope on the Maggie and there are differences with the cowling, hmmm
