Hey Basil Brush.....
So cunning you can pin a tail on it and call it a fox!!
I for one - as one of those dispised expat Oz drivers - firmly told them NO from the gekko.
Suggest you get a grip on reality my son.

Could we all see a copy of the BALPA document, Chocks?
Haven't seen one as it was word of mouth from there.
I've combed their site but looks like you require a log-in, for such info.

Oz Aviation today quoted BG as saying the costing for V Oz had been done at $70 barrel of oil with worst case $110. The price of oil per barrel is now at $162.
The share price hovers around 79c.
Must say I am not tempted to join this mob..........unless ofcourse I was about to retire.

greenslopes, your piece of news is one of many major warning signs anyone who reads the press will have seen, particularly since January, when the economic situation in the US really started looking 'interesting'. (Not that is hasn't looked 'interesting' for years now - it's just that most have chosen to ignore its more 'interesting' aspects.)
Given the Oz Avn article you quote and the other pointers to VOz' entry into the market being tenuous at best, the number of starters they get from EK, particularly those with young families and more than a year or two to retirement, will be a clear indication of just how disenchanted the pilot workforce at EK has become with life in the Sandpit. I for one suspect that more will go despite the risks and the almost insulting pay than many might imagine, such is the level of disenchantment with Dubai (rather than with Emirates).

It will be interesting to see just how many EK/SQ/ etc guys take the job.I imagine alot of them will pull out and opt for job security.Although the VB pilots have a clause which enables them to go back if it all goes tits up I would think you would have to be foolish to even bother. The money is not the best let alone the costs involved in commuting in and out of Sydney.Hopefully they all will not have burnt bridges with their previous employer if this ambitous project fails.Good luck to all.
I don't see what's so ambitious about it. QF have been ripping people off for years on the Pacific and people want an alternative to what is effectively (yes I know United occasionally fly the route but that's not competition) a monopoly.
V Aus will make a killing on the Pacific and to Japan.
But yes they need to base outside Sydney and also make user-friendly rosters. With airlines in Hong Kong and the UAE improving their packages recently it will be a challenge getting the right people.

I don't see how V Australia would take on this type of project if they were not closely and maturely watching the cost of fuel. They may be offering low pay, but surely they aren't stupid. Surely a B777 will be far more efficient (cost per seat) across the pacific than a B744. In terms of competing, surely they'll win hands down, particularly with a three class product. Fuel costs are hurting everyone.....
Any word on other routes?
By the way, any idea if they'll be wearing the brown trousers......and no tie!!
