Expressions of interest are sought from suitably educated and motivated people who would like to begin their flying career with Rex. Outstanding candidates will be given a scholarship of up to half the fees for attaining a commercial pilot license. Applicants must hold the following key attributes.
HSC or equivalent with satisfactory passes in Maths and English
Permanent Australian Resident

So now presumably you'll have bare CPLs in the RHS of Saabs and Metros?

So now REX captians, are not only been paid absolute Cr$p money, on top of that, REX management are going to make them work harder and under more pressure because the person in the RHS is going to have no previous real life flying experience. This problem is so easy to fix, yet management are so worried about the bottom line they won't pay to resolve it. I fell sorry for the great guys and girls at REX who are being put under pressure. No disrespect to the young cadets who want to get into the industry, but this is not the way. Believe me, it is hard and crappy, but some of the most amazing experiences I have ever had were doing S/E Charter up north. It is great to jump into the RHS of a nice shiny turbo prop, but not spending sometime in GA cutting your teeth, well you are missing out on building that foundation of confidence. It is what has made Australian pilots so well respected for so long. Good luck to all.

Shock horror - some of them are good pilots! I'd be more concerned about jumping into a Chieftain or similar with a "Bare CPL" pilot, as some GA outfits are doing.
Any more details? like min hours? etc sounds a good way to get in though.
Paying half your costs of a CPL! and then most likely a job at the end, unlike QF's program where you pay EVERYTHING and maybe a job @ the end. Atleast with REX putting $$$ towards it they are going to want to keep the staff.
Are they looking @ everyone from no hours to some hours? or someone who has a PPL working towards CPL already?

Edit: Also about the comment about Bare CPL's in the RHS, remember in Europe they have FO's flying 320s, 737's etc with 200-500TT hours! So no difference really.

The QF cadetship is pretty awesome too! Even though you do have to pay everything, you're pretty much guaranteed a job at the end, ex-cadets have told me that since they can remember no one has been robbed of a job opportunity with Qantas - so it is a good way to go to!

Is the cadetship for people fresh out of high school or for people who have already obtained a PPL, CPL etc..
If it is for people fresh out of high school, i would imagine their requirements would have to be very low because all the people who did good at high school obviously go through Qantas. Therefor not leaving REX with much.

Friday's Australian (Aviation section) Regional Express Airlines are seeking suitably motivated individuals for it's upcoming "Cadet" Program.
Evidently REX will be paying half the training cost for the sucessful applicants!
Lots of questions...
How much return of service required?
How will these individuals qualify for command?
Who will be left to line train them?
Can they be sucessfully line trained under the current Check and Training system?
Given the fact that Qantas are ramping up their own cadet program, (correct me if I'm wrong, but 500 new S/O's required over the next 3 years!) how will REX compete with the RAT for applicants?
Does REX know of the failure of this system at Skippers? And the trouble they are in now!
Does REX know of the failure of this system at Airlink? And the trouble they are in now!
With the cost of an intergrated CPL course with Multi-Engine instrument rating costing what?.... $80K? REX are now prepared to subsidise individuals who have so far contributed absolutely nothing to this industry, up to $40K!
Perhaps this money may be better spent on initiatives to retain the last of the experienced crews?

As a very small percentage of applicants for QF Cadets are succesful, there will still be plenty of quality people availabl for Rex. In fact, as they seem to be offering a substantial subsidy to the training, some may well prefer Rex to QF.
As to those worried about low time guys being in the RHS of Metros and Saabs, all over the world graduate Cadets occupy the RHS pf Jets in Airline service, and often get commands four or five years later.
It's a different philosophy, but think about this- where's the best place to get experience:- As PIC of a single, unsupervised, in small, less structured companies with paying Pax on board, or as number two with a very experienced Captain looking after you?

Some stayed, some moved on to other airlines, most gained invaluable command experience in PNG. I'm sure REX is aware of the need for command experience?
Appears to be a very worthwhile and successful long term investment for any airline and opens up another career path for airline entry.

I think it is a great idea & positive news for those wanting to get into the RHS. Although it does not solve the problem of having experienced PIC to fill the LHS. I am sure if they offered more money and home bases for their experienced captains they will stay!

Why don't REX just make an application to CASA to get an exemption against have the requirement to have the 340's operated 2 crew?
That way, 1 captain can fly the plane, rather than have to watch the shop, AND keep an evil eye on the low time pilot or cadet sitting in the RHS?

Ah! This is good, brings me to something I've always wanted to know and always have been skeptical about... Sorry in advance, but this thread is going to be hijacked (can I still use that word?) slightly.
School principles say, "you need great marks to become a pilot."
"Only 70! You need 90's + to become a commercial pilot," says the teacher.
Now, I'm not going to lie, I'm not a grade A student, as much as I'd like to be! Also, I am embarrassed to say that when it comes to school study I am one of the laziest little pr!cks there is. But, I do want to be an airline pilot and do show enthusiasm in any study aviation related.
So, for those of you about to throw your monitors out the window screaming "get to the FARKING POINT KID," I put it to you - do you have to be a 99.99999 student to become an airline pilot?
Are there any airline pilots on this very board that just barely passed year 12 or even failed?
Love to see the thoughts, opinions and actual stories people have to tell.
