Just out of curiousity, if the new starts are on AWA's and they are the cadets covered by that joke of a LOA (i.e. the one giving them back-dated seniority to when they started their tough GA time), then surely the LOA doesn't apply since they won't be employed under our EBA?
would the current group, i.e. those currently employed under the EBA, have a say in whether or not new starts would be under the award or under an AWA?
Expect heaps of courses from July through to next July
Not to mention the upgrades for when the some 400 plus senior captains resign / retire enmass on July1!

Krusty, did you note that the slots for promotion have been amended to a closing date of 12 June? Four weeks notice is required to be given for retirements so QF management will know before closure of those slots who will be leaving on or about 1 Jul. Even there is a flood I suspect that QF won't be caught too short for too long. Nothing that broken pattern lines, riot clauses and 180-185 hour divisors won't fix for a couple of bid periods anyway!

Good theory I hadn't considered but despite all previously mentioned I can't figure out;
- why some pilots on the best money will leave suddenly on 1st July, unless they fear the 'super' laws might suddenly change in late '07 (in which case they'll still have plenty of notice to organise their bail out later)?
- whether there really is such a level of animosity that those able, being those also least affected by recent QF head-kicking, would intentionally 'stick-it' to QF out of spite simply to make a point for the rest of the pilots? (one could only hope I guess!)

It's about to start!
From the recent Training Section meeting, the planned intake of pilots in FY07/08 is the largest in the history of Qantas and this just for mainline (starting in July). Planning is for the simulators to be operating 24 hours per day which is why they have just advertised for sim instructors.
The regional operators are going to have even more trouble retaining their existing pilots.

Guys,
Heard the same thing about the first course for direct entry pilots being for the B747-300. They are very short of crew for the LAs and the Hajj.

The employment of B787 Management pilots is in accordance with the agreement with the JPC and Jetstar pilots, according to my friends at J*. Any management pilot position can be filled from external applicants. The agreement applies to non-management pilots, which includes Trainers and Checkers.
The wide-body amendment permits the employment of DEC and Checkers for fixed terms during the introduction of any new type.
It may pay to check out the facts before mouthing off.

Thanks for the info Turbo. As you are aware, this is a rumour forum and I was just passing on what I had heard. If I was a reporter for a news service then I would have an obligation to verify the facts before going into print (something that the journos often don't do). GB

The appointment of 787 pilots is not in accordance with the JPC or Jetstar pilots.
That is why they are being empolyed under AWAs and not under the existing EBA.

This to account for the A380's and 787's arriving, 5 extra A330's with accelerated delivery schedule, no pensioning off the 767's due to Tiger, extra 737-800's plus no further 737's to be retired.
This does not take into account the 787's to Jetstar. God knows where they are going to get the pilots from, but it also means that pilots will industrially be in a much stronger position, provided we can keep it all together chaps!

Mathematically there is no way Howard will lose the senate majority until Jun 30 08, then, the best case scenario for Rudd (assuming he wins) would be 34 senate seat, with the coalition on 34 and 8 independents.
Why do I mention this? workchoices stays until at least July 08.
My guess is that FOG is now betting on a labor win & wants to get as many pilots in employed on AWA's before any new IR legislation would pass a non-coalition majority senate. The aim would be to perpetually grandfather these agreements (and I use that term loosely, instruments perhaps?) to create an ongoing B-scale.
Of course Rudd has also stated that the right to negotiate a collective agreement will be reinstated.

it would be nice if all new starters said no to AWA's then they'd have to be put on the award...but how to organize this???? a lot to ask a new bloke cut off from support to unilaterally make this decision just hoping others do the same....
preventing the disunity has to come from within....(is this even possible?)

I believe (and hope) the "teeth" in workchoices lies in the regulation as opposed to the legislation. Thus the government of the day can change the regulations as it sees fit and the legislation is not so important. Can anyone else confirm this????
