I'll see You then at 10.45 on friday ;)
|
It is really starting to drag now. I know its been barely no time in comparison to others, but it's not a nice feeling not knowing.
Stage 2 is exactly that, FEAST and NATS tests. They are fairly challenging. Really have to concentrate. Not something I think you could really prepare for at all. Let us know how you get on, when you eventually book a date! |
Hey guys got my first test early next month, quick question does the test end at the specified end time? Just trying to organise flights cheers
|
Did you take the strip display management test LGW08 or has it been replaced by the Dart test ?
|
Hello, I have my Stage 1 on the 26th and have been trying to work out what I need to learn. I found a post waaay back on page 22 (http://www.pprune.org/3480230-post436.html) and I was wondering if anyone could tell me if much has changed since that guy did the tests?
It's the link to the SHL site that has thrown me off because I haven't actually seen any mention of what type of SHL tests, if any, are used in stage 1. Any help would be greatly appreciated |
Done the first stage this morning! It will be interesting to see the results. Good luck to everyone!

hello,
Im due to take my phase 1 interview at the beginning of next month. Has anyone got any information regarding the numeracy test? what level math is required? any information would be much appreciated. thanks |
logex: get a train from London to Southampton - National Rail Enquiries - Official source for UK train times and timetables
can get them cheaper if you book in advance. t2522: practice your Speed/distance/time equations and you'll be golden. |
Just got back home after going to the Stage 1 Assessment (Nice 300 mile round trip starting at 7:15am!) and i'm not really sure how to feel...
I did the first paper, then I reckon >50% got sent home, as there was only about 15 - 20 people left out of about 40 - 45. (Obviously, I was happy I passed this bit). The 2nd & 3rd papers I thought were quite challenging, but I may have done better than I think...who knows?! - I guess i'll find out in about 2 weeks. Good Luck to anyone still to take the tests...and make sure you do revise is my only tip! |
Hello
Any pointers about what was asked in this exam? I visited ATC in Belfast and got pointers but they are unsure about what will be asked
|
Hey
Sitting the stage one test on the same day. I went to ATC in Belfast and they helped me prepare but they said go through the notes sent in the email and you should be fine.
|
Good luck! I hope you pass. I'm going to stage one on the 26th so if you don't mind me asking questions here I go... the first paper is it about the theory they give you? Does anyone know how much time do they give you for the arithmetic problems?
|
were you in the morning or afternoon session scott?
Just got back to Cambridge myself after sitting stage 1 this afternoon..... Found the first 2 tests really easy (ATC and Numeracy) and was really shocked to see nearly 50% of the people failing.... as long as you can do basic S/D/T and spend a reasonable amount of time on test booklet you will be more than fine.... On the 2nd part- diagramming and cubes, I found the cubes in particular hard, not so much the work but more how little time we had to answer! Only managed to answer 36 out of 50 on diagramming and 26 out of 40 on cubes! anyone know if this is common as think most of other guys around me suffered same problem.... Good luck all! |
PinOnTheRight: hey... you are right!, I thought you were kinda kiddin when I read your thread. I also had a subscrption with them, but hadn't logged in for quite a while but was planning to do so when I get my dates for the test!. Bunch of crooks. If I find out anything I'll let you know.
Scott C: well things must¡ve definitely changed... When I last took the test back in 2010 we started of with a test on the literature followed by the numerical one. If you passed these two, you were then tested on the remaining tests of stage one, otherwise, you were asked to leave. But I can recall that out of about 30 people, only 3 or 4 failed the numerical/literature. And you say that over 50% didn't pass the first part?, stone the crows. Which by the way, both literature and numerical is one test now, isn't it? mishaastaroth: it used to be 20 q' in 5 minutes. You werent expected to answer them all. People usually passed no prob. But now, I dunno. According to Scott C, things seem to have hardened up. |
I don't think that literature is still in..

NATS stage 1
Hi all,
did my stage 1 today. I agree with the above, almost 50% got 'invited to leave' (love that phrase) after the first test paper on the material already given in the invitation e-mail. There are no suprises, if you learn and practice everything they give you then you've got a chance! I too found it got pretty tough on the last test. Hope I did better than it felt. Also, we were finished and out about 30 mins quicker than stated end time. thanks and good luck all |
If I have to do 20 problems in 5 min ....I'm doomed!
Do they give you a blank sheet to do the operations? |
Around 50% got to go home after the first 2 papers when I did stage 1 too, maybe the day you did it the group was unusually good?
|
Just a quick question, if we are asked some distances between airports, would it be in nautical miles or in miles ?
cheers |
Crazy Voyager: yeah, perhaps. The thing is, I do remember someone telling me that when they took the test, also a very small numbere didn't pass the first part. I don't know then.
Changing subject, you are now in college or waiting to be awarded a starting date, could it be?. HeaVn: I can't really remember. I think the problems used knots (speed measurement) and nautical mile (distance measurement). |
Thanks mts1,
Can we be asked questions that are not on the paper? like for exemple some distances between major airports ? |
HeaVn: yeah, in fact you are asked q' regarding distances between major airports. Except for this, the rest were about the content of the leaflet.
|
sat stage 1 yesterday afternoon and was a mixed bag really...
found the initial test (ATC and numeracy) very easy and was shocked at the amount of people who were asked to leave. Diagramming was okay, but cubes were pretty hard... only answered 36/50 on diagramming and 25/40 on cubes so bit worried really , although guys around me answered similar amounts, anyone know if this is normal? good luck everyone |
These questions about distance between airports concern only the British airports, that "use" NATS as the service provider? You have to memorize the distance and the questions are to test our knowledge? It's not like you are given a map, scale and you are supposed to estimate it?
|
No, you aren't given a map or anything at that. Straight forward question on distance. I can't really remember what cities they asked. But I think they were within the U.K's territory. I think I recall on of them being Manchester and Newcastle, but don't take much notice. The purpose of this type of question, since unpredicted, (as it does't come on the leaflet) I think is to measure some other skill. However, don't screw about these distance questions, there were only a couple or so, and they were not difficult.
|
well... :)
I see what you mean. D/S/T calcs won't be a problem for me, but since I am not british I sure would have more trouble "knowing" the apox distance between city pairs... I think its of to UK geography for me now... ;)
|
Hiya!
Sat the S1 on the 14th @ 13:45. We were 40 people aprox and something like 12 were invited to go to another room. I reckon I was a bit worried despite ending the test with good sensations. (It was the only test I actually got to finish and then go over some questions I had doubts about) Does anyone know if NATS reply within 15 days or do they actually do so before? Good luck to everyone, cheers. Spaniard33 |
mishaastoroth: Yeah, you are provided with scrap paper if needed. But let me say, that if you have to use it, you are definetly busted, unless used for a specific operation. They are looking for maximum speed, wich can only be acquired mentally, coz if you have to turn to scrap paper, how ever fast you could be, it's never going to be fast enough. But remember, you aren't expected to answer to whole 20 to pass.
|
@MountainSide
Im not British either, that's why it would sure be a problem, apart from London, Liverpool, Menchester and now since im going there for the interview Southampton i have no idea about UK's geography, also im used to metric system, it's not a problem in V/D/T calculations since it doesnt matter what units im operating on while calculating, but when estimating discance from one city to the other it does. I'm not worring about it that much, but still it's field I could loose some points. |
I used the scrap paper for the maths questions and I still passed. I'm a visual thinker, in that sometimes I have to write something down, maybe in a different way to be able to solve it. It may even be a way to calm the nerves.
I answered all the other questions and came back to the maths ones. That way I could take more time, work them through correctly and thoroughly and not have any remaining questions nagging at me and panicking me. |
When I did my first Stage 1 back in 2010 I did all of the papers...along with only three others. 4 out of 25 or so were asked to stay - 84% didn't make that cut in my session. I figured that was standard but I guess not reading back. I used the scrap paper too. From memory it was more to confirm calculations after I'd answered the questions at the end of the paper since I had a few minutes.
On a slightly different note that may seem absurd to some / most / ALL of you, I've got my second whack at Stage 1 this Thursday (10:45am) but here's the kicker...I've never even flown before! I doubt this affects my standing at all but just thought I'd share. |
sorry to keep badgering on but has anyone else got any info/experience on how many cubes and diagramming questions they actually managed to answer in stage 1?!
Im spewing that only managed 36/50 on diagramming and 25/40 on cubes, spewing! |
I did my online test on the 6th of September and I still haven't heard back regarding Stage 1. Are they still inviting people? Does it mean I've failed? I didn't find it too hard, I may have got 2 or 3 wrong.
|
@sorinc03 don't worry, they will get back to you with a result. It may take time but I'm sure they havn't forgotten, and I have never heard of someone not being informed of failing (nor have I heard of anyone failing before stage 1).
@therealist IIRC I managed all of the diagrams and left 3 or 4 cubes, but that's not saying it's what is needed to pass. Just do your very best and hope for the best, that's all you can do really... |
Hello everyone.
Completed my stage one on 3rd September, and found out I passed on Friday 14th September - a few days less than the 15 working days they said. I've got my stage 2 tests on Friday 28th Sept, but unlike the first tests, NATS give no information as to what the tests are, other than 'computer tests'. Does anyone know what sort of tests they are? I've been back a several pages to see if anyone has said what they are, but I've not really found much. Obviously I don't want to know all details (I've always had the idea that you should be able to do these tests without that much practice) but a general idea would be nice. Thanks! Also - @sorinc03 - I got the invite a few days after completing the online test. I sent an email to HR and asked them if they had my results. Don't know if that was being too pushy, but it might be worth you doing the same. @therealist - I managed all diagrams (I used the rough paper a lot for those), but left a few cubes out towards the end. I wanted to be sure of my answers, and didn't want to guess completely at random - the few I guessed on were ones where I was 70%+ certain. Wasn't sure if it would do more harm than good to guess completely! |
Hi, I went to the assessment day on Friday, got an invitation to the next round today. Was wondering if anyone knew what form the computer tests for stage 2 take and if there is anywhere to practice for them?
|
Anyone booked for the 3rd had an email to say it's been cancelled?
