As BAMRA hasn't officially confirmed that it is in fact Orkney, I Googled it to be sure, and can confirm that it's Hatston.

I assume the reference to it being too dry is aimed at my pic and not the Orkneys:}

Turin it is not;)

The Robin inside the hangar and the runway markings have definitely some French touch. Most probalbly Provence or Languedoc (based on the countryside)

As to the records, well, Hans-Werner Grosse flew 1460km to Biarritz from here in an ASW12, on the 25.4.72. This distance was only recently beaten, I think in wave in south America. Still the longest thermal flight ever.

The second record is his ETA glider which is based there. It has the largest wingspan of any glider of 30.9m and a glide angle of 1:70:ooh:

Evansb does it again!

Kingsfield is used by Crusaders Gliding Club(whom I can recommend incidentally:)) and the Army parachute club.
Its reason for exisiting is as an evacuation strip should the TCs get nasty again...Its proximity to the border meant that it was built cross to the prevailing seabreeze which means you get very good at x-wind landings;)

Incidentally, the T-Porter was there in support of the Red Devils who were doing their pre-season warm-up in Cyprus- much like the other 'Reds' do as well:ok:. It stopped us flying for 10 minutes, but at least I got a good shot of it...

Bl**dy hell. Correct! Five minutes - and without the picture! Well done Roly. You must have seen a similar view more than once in your career.

The picture should have appeared by now. It didn't at first because I had named it in photobucket with an expletive to suggest it was very cold. It appears pprune stops expletives - even in links. It does fit the criteria for being historic as it was taken from a Victor about tenty years ago.

It is indeed Goose. Taken on an exercise 'Snow Goose' the aim of which was to perfect operating in cold weather. Exercise 'Practice Bleeding' if there ever was one! having said that, I've been flying around China for the last week, and the experience of Snow Goose has been very useful!

Best regards, and you have control.
