There are clues in the photo if you look hard enough at the end of the runway.

The cars in the photo will give you a clue to the age of the photo which is also important when guessing the location.

I will post another photo later if this is too hard.

Brunton maybe? Is that a Montego?

621andy
24th Feb 2008, 10:31
Looks like either the Severn Bridge or the Humber bridge in the background. I don't know of any microlight strips near the Severn bridge, so I assume it must be ooop north...

dixi188
24th Feb 2008, 10:35
Don't Know what its called but I think its just north east of Ely in Cambridgeshire between two of the four railway lines that cross the road to Prickwillow. Queen Adelaide is a place nearby.

Background Noise
24th Feb 2008, 10:35
I'm assuming that that 'bridge' is an electrified railway.

Flap40
24th Feb 2008, 11:52
A disused (wartime?) airfield. The design of the overhead wires on the railway suggest more then two tracks. the lighting suggest that the sun is to the right of the picture.

The only place that I can find that matches the above is Tholthorpe.

Pain in the R's
24th Feb 2008, 11:54
No you are all wrong on the location, it is a railway in the background and the car is a Montego.

How about Radlett?

Pain in the R's
24th Feb 2008, 12:30
Radlett it is. Photos taken in 1990 before the runways were dug up. Radlett was the factory site of Handley Page and the home of the Halifax bomber, Victor and Herald to name but a few. Whose runways ended their flying days in these microlight rally photos on what I believe was the last ever landings at this airfield.

Is it Italian, possibly in 1923 when it became the fascist Règia Aeronautica Italia?

Duckbutt

Significant amount of google guess work would suggest that the bomber could well be a Handley Page V-1500.

So could the airfield be Bircham Newton?

I think Sabredog is right, the airplanes to the right are marked with a 'Scottish thistle', which was the sign of the Brasschaat first squadron.

It is technically all the same place, but the second pic is of the hangars on the side of the peninsula as far as I can work out from other pics :)

I took the photos from the official website of this airfield, so don't blame me if the pics don't match up:sad:

But as far as I can work out from other pics on the site and from Google Earth, the 2nd pic is to the east of the first. The area is/was not only a seaplane base, but later became a training base for a certain type of soldier. The airfield there now is land based and covers a fair area along the coast...

I'll give you it StbD:D- It's actually BAN(Base Aero Navale) Aspretto.
It was originally a seaplane base(Cam 5s & PL15s), then after the war became a base for Breguet Alizes. Nord 262s are based there now I believe.

It is or was, a training base for the French SAS equivalent.

The land based airfield is now, as StbD guessed, LFKJ Ajaccio/Campo Del Oro.

Presumably then not anywhere in the UK?

evansb
11th Mar 2008, 14:58
Not in the U.K. The airport was notable during WW.II . The airport is still active, but I think the terminal building and control tower pictured have been demolished.

evansb
11th Mar 2008, 18:14
Sorry, tis not Ireland. It is a sunny locale, but it is not known for its double-decker buses. The airport had something in common with Shannon a while ago.

Going back much earlier than 9/11. They also share a few things that are timeless. The mystery airport is not located in North America.

Flying boats?:O

11th Mar 2008, 23:36
Wow, thank you, I just jumped in here with no knowledge at all ! Have no idea of any links with Shannon, But worst of all have nothing to post, "but I'll be back" So it's "OPEN HOUSE" Keith.

evansb
12th Mar 2008, 00:36
Both Lisbon and Shannon were trans-atlantic terminuses, and during World War II, both Ireland and Portugal were neutral. The aerodromes quickly became transfer points and gateways for many a spy, diplomat, refugee and celebrity. Secrets and personnel were often traded.

They are on a similar meridian of longitude (approx. 9 deg. W.) and are by the Atlantic Ocean. Pan Am's Flying Clippers made many trips between Foynes and Lisbon. In 1945 one of Pan Am's last Boeing 314 Flying Boat scheduled flights was made between Foynes and Lisbon.

The SSK
12th Mar 2008, 07:31
In 1947 Carris purchased two double-deck Leyland Titan PD1A buses (#201-202). Next came 84 AEC Regent Mark III double deckers and 28 Mark Vs. These were followed by 232 front-entrance Mark V models. The Mark Vs were finally withdrawn in 1991.

Did they drive on the left then? Unless I'm having a senior moment the cab is set up for driving on the left - which was one of the reasons I thought it was UK. The DC6s I thought might be French rugby charters, hence Turnhouse. Funny how your mind works.

evansb
12th Mar 2008, 13:47
For The SSK, Check thread #2690. I've posted a photo of Lisboa airport taken airside in 1962 showing the first TAP Caravelle on the apron. Note the new control tower has the old tower's rotating beacon. The older photo was from a postcard from which I cropped out 'Lisboa Airport'.
TAP operated DC-6s. The Turnhouse terminal building of the 1950s does not resemble the buildings in my photos of Lisbon. I can't speak for the double-decker bus except perhaps that it does appear to be driving on the right-hand side of the road. I do know Lisbon is noted for trams.

OK then; that guy under the intakes appears to be having a Gander at something.

Dan Winterland
12th Mar 2008, 14:54
Not Namao or Gander. There weren't many places the V bombers were allowed to go as they were considered such a valuable asset. This was a regular destination.
