sabredog

R.A.F.Scampton or Upper Heyford?

ZH875
16th Mar 2008, 10:56
Speedpig has it, but not for the right reasons.

This was the second watch office at Waddington, replacing one that was on top of the Mere Road hangar complex. This tower was demolished when the runways were built and the taxiways widened.

There have been a total of 5 control buildings at Waddington, 3 still exist

Answers to the clues:
There is a flying club and the Lincs Air ambulance helicopter based here.
Cranwell is close to Waddington
Many overseas aircraft visit the Airshow every year
The Main road to the camp is the A607, and the gate guard is XM607.
50 Sqn was at Upwood with Canberra aircraft and disbanded at Waddington in 1984.
The Gash bus company (its actual name) used to run busses in Lincoln, and their garage is just down the A607 from the camp, it burned down last year, taking a few old busses with it.

Over to Speedpig.

Speedpig
16th Mar 2008, 14:14
Great challenge thanks.
And there was me thinking the road was A36, and started looking for aircraft type rather than reg.
The Gash bus company gave me the best clue, so was a bit lucky as I only found the Bowbridge Road depot and then used Google Earth to find the nearest airfield.
Is the Vulcan still there?

I regret to announce it's open house as I'm not at home.

Help yourselves guys.

ZH875
16th Mar 2008, 14:31
Yes, Speedpig, XM607 is still there, now parked over by the A15, opposite the spotters enclosure.

She was cleaned and repainted last year, and externally looks quite good.

As Speedpig has declared open house, we all await the next picture.

So first one in gets the call.

Are we discussing auxilliary fields in Georgia,or should we be searching further south, geographically speaking?

evansb
17th Mar 2008, 15:36
It is not in the state of Georgia. Go west. It is not an auxilliary field. It was home to two B-26 squadrons during WW.II. The airport is presently the 'GA' field for the city. The original runways are still visible. Portions of the apron seen in the photo are still in use.

sidtheesexist,

nearly correct, its in Vienna NW of Augarten but on the west bank of the Donaukanal. Today only the soccerfield exists. The Streetname is Nussdorferlaende.

During 1945 till 1955 the RAF base Vienna Schwechat, now Vienna Airport, and the USAAF Base Tulln (pict. 2899) were within the Russian zone of Austria. To communicate to the American and the British Zone in Vienna without travelling by road through the Soviet zone 2 landing fields were constructed. The American along the Danube canal, see picture, and the British in front of the Schoebrunn castle, which was as PSP runway.

Not Warnemünde, warmtoast, but you are getting "warm" in a geographical sense, and by that I don't mean a ridiculous 1400 miles or so !

Gosh - this has me confused!
A circle drawn 1400 miles from Rostock runs through Southern Spain so is your non-clue I don't mean a ridiculous 1400 miles or so ! actually a clue? - and perhaps these aircraft were photographed somewhere in Spain during the Spanish Civil War? In which case I've no idea where it could be so far south.

Otherwise how about Wismar in Germany?

sabredog
7th Apr 2008, 12:58
Warmtoast, apologies if I did not make myself clear, you are on the right track in Germany, so please disregard the 1400 mile radius jibe. It refers to a recent post. The town/city adjacent to this airfield featured in the Thirty Years War, and the airfield also has a tenuous link to Yuri Gagarin!

twochai
7th Apr 2008, 14:58
Northern Germany, tenuous link to Gagarin? Peenemunde??

Warmtoast
7th Apr 2008, 15:35
Sabredog

The town/city adjacent to this airfield featured in the Thirty Years War, and the airfield also has a tenuous link to Yuri Gagarin!

Town featured in the Thirty Years War is the Treptow-Köpenick area of Berlin; Gagarin did some training at the Archenhold Observatory / Zeiss Planetarium here and what was the the former Johannisthal airfield is now a business park/industrial park.

So sticking my head above the parapet once again I suggest Johannisthal.

sabredog

Warmer still,Twochai. A good line of thought, but not Peenemunde.

sabredog
7th Apr 2008, 15:41

evansb
7th Apr 2008, 19:44
Neubrandenburg ? Although I don't know the airfield's connection to Yuri Gagarin.

sabredog
7th Apr 2008, 20:02
Correct, evansb. The photograph is of Trollenhagen as a Luftwaffe base, which later became Neubrandenburg-Trollenhagen.
As a DDR airfield it was the base for JG2 (Jagdfliegergeschwader 2 "Juri Gagarin"). Neubradenburg was recaptured from the Swedes by the Imperial Catholic League forces in 1631, although I do not believe Trollenhagen airfield played any part in this victory!
Many thanks for the excellent replies.
