Thanks LFT. I believe many of those C130s were being stored prior to delivery to the RAAF.
Here is the next one, back in time again but I am sure this will be no problem

MReyn24050

seacue
23rd Nov 2007, 18:19
Correct KMG, it's Carriacou. You have control.

Point Salines is a MUCH larger airport, capable of handling substantial jets. My LIAT Islander flight was from Pt Salines to CRU. We climbed as rapidly as an Islander does for the length of mainland Grenada, thus having a reserve of height for the over-water portion to Carriacou. I think CRU was still gravel when I was there.

MReyn24050

chevvron
28th Nov 2007, 17:04
I would say Gravesend, but I can't think of anything built there; certainly it's a housing estate though. Not Brooklands either although the building does bear some resemblance to the old clubhouse which still stands, but it's an industrial estate not housing.

MReyn24050
28th Nov 2007, 17:24
chevvron. It was indeed Gravesend Airport :ok::D.
Opened in 1932, an airfield built near Chalk and operated by Gravesend Aviation Ltd served Gravesend and has a significant place in the history of British aviation. From 1933 to 1936 it was home to Percival Aircraft, building the famous Mew Gull racing aircraft among others, before the company moved to Luton. After 1936 Essex Aero was based on the site, and maintained the airfield's link with racing aeroplanes by preparing the de Havilland DH.88 Comets and Alex Henshaw's Percival Mew Gull that set the record for a flight from England to South Africa.
The airfield site today has become a housing estate called RIVERVIEW PARK and little can be identified of the original use, but Leander Drive and Vigilant Way seem to have been built on the original perimeter track. "CASCADES" Leisure Centre in Thong Lane which is between Vigilant Way and Leander Drive has a plaque which is dedicated to the airmen of WWII which served at Gravesend Airport. The Control Tower from the Airport was located in the grounds

I thought perhaps Hucknall, but I see from Google Earth it isn't. However, can anyone tell me what the structure is in the middle of the runway at Hucknall?

IFT, that's an engine test bed for Rolls Royce. It can simulate rain, birdstrikes, cold, etc. Click link to see picture and read more.

Thanks. I could see it was some kind of pole, but I was mystified by the large embankment around it. It all makes sense now, but why did they have to put it in the middle of a perfectly good runway!!

evansb,

The spud drying machine would make more sense if it was at CFB Summerside ;)

I hope you'll stick around instead of just passing through.

Don't worry about not having a picture, because it gives me an opportunity to step in with pictures of an airfield I have been trying to find for a long time.

I just found them yesterday and they are better than I expected. I can just see Hercule Poirot and Captain Hastings walking into this terminal:

Ramsgate it is.

My first flight was there in about 1958 in a Rapide (7/6d or 37.5p). Perhaps it is the one in SSK's photo (although looking closely, it might be a Dragon).

The rows of tents are from an Airport Camping Weekend.

And sadly, the whole airport and that wonderful terminal are buried under an industrial development.
