BLK is a small airport in terms of jets, but they fly out early and land late - not forgetting the noise of the private a/c and helicopters.

I did not see that - I just read the first reports on the BBC website. I think that Pontings had the financial clout to have made an unrefusable offer if they had wanted to extend their lease. But even so if the owner was not keen to extend the lease, was it because he wanted to sell for building?, or had he an idea the BB might want it for BLK airport?

The last paragraph of your post is definitely intriguing.

Housing plan for Pontins site - Blackpool Today

Plans to build housing on the Pontins site first appeared last December so is hardly "news"

Housing plan for site of Blackpool Pontin's - Blackpool Today

Ernest Lanc's 9th September 2009 21:47

And it's only a plan. I have stayed at Pontins before the current amount of Jet traffic. and that was bad enough. Who would want a home next to BLK with it's potential for expansion?.

Putting in an application is one thing, getting it accepted is quite another as I have found to my cost in the past.

The new route is the fifth to be announced by Jet2.com from Manchester recently, with the carrier also set to launch flights to Tunisia, Kos, Gran Canaria and Venice.
I wonder if any of Kos, Gran Canaria or Tunisa is earmarked for BLK?.

Soarce: Jet2.com to introduce flights to Madeira from Manchester

I doubt it Ernest but it would be a pleasant surprise if it happened.

Would think BLK has whats its getting for next year, so much for expansion in 2010!!! More of well more reductions, having been away , i see mondays AGp slot been taken by the Jersey flights, therefore killing the costa del sol short hop from BLK, If has has been said before , that BLk is a little goldmine for Jet2, why then are we not seeing more routes?, as much good Jet2 as done , the airport surely crying out for another operator to come along side them, but who???:(

take-off 12th September 2009 21:46

Oh and as for the housing, well its bound to be passed, dont the local councils have to find room somewhere here for 7000 houses, already a big stink going on about building on the moss, and by jct4 of M55, possibly Blackpool council may object , due to them wanting govt money to practically buldoze half the town down and re build it, but as airport doesnt come under Blackpools juristiction, all they can do is put an objection in , pretty much up to fydle borough ,and most of their residents in st annes would love to see the airport shut, so it doesnt disturb their afternoon nap!!!!:mad::mad:

Well maybe from JET2. I think we agree that BLK have done their best to attract new airlines to BLK, and no less than Susan Kendrick has assured me that BLK are:-

"We are still though in constant discussions with airlines about routes that could perform well out of Blackpool and as was the case with Jersey and Bulgaria".

If BLK and BB don't attract anything new for 2020, I am sure they have done their best.

TSR2 13th September 2009 01:03

You are giving them every opportunity there Ernest :ok:

Ernest Lanc's 13th September 2009 01:23

Well yep by 2010:O

Sandgrown 13th September 2009 16:04

Ernest, you should be part of the "Team" @ BLK.

They need forward-thinkers...

August 2009 Statistics

An interesting statistic for August is that there were +10.5% aircraft movements than in the same month in 2008.

Passenger numbers were down 27.3% for the same period.

Yes I know that's why I'm just skirting round the edges. MUFC is a bit slow off the mark this month.

Blackpool Figures

Come on MUFC fan - a good month for Blackpool with passenger figures down 27 per cent - that is stretching it a bit to say the least.

MU is right - It seems to have escaped your notice that there has been a downturn at most airports. BLK it seems are a the very least holding their own with Jet2 consolidating their current routes for the time being.

compton3bravo 14th September 2009 21:49

Blackpool Figures

No East Lancs it hasnīt escaped my notice that most airports have seen a drop in passenger figures. My now two local airports Malaga and Gibraltar have both seen a drop in passenger numbers especially Malaga but not 27 per cent. My local airport when I lived in the UK (Luton) has seen a 7.5 per cent drop in passenger numbers for August compared to 12 months ago and I cannot see a spokesman - oops sorry spokesperson - saying they have had a good month.
Granted Blackpool does not or ever will get a large number of passengers but saying that they had a good month with a drop of 27 per cent is ridiculous.

Ernest Lanc's 14th September 2009 22:07

compton3bravo

You can't compare Blackpool with Malaga for the simple reason Malaga is a holiday destination airport with people visiting Southern Spain from many countries. Blackpool on the other had does not have as much to offer as the many destinations served by Malaga on the Costa Del Sol - Torremolinos, Benalmadena and Fuengirola to name just three, and Nerja on the other side of Malaga. The English weather has put paid to BLK being an international holiday destination IMO.

Also Torremolinos in particular also caters for USA travelers in late summer, Blackpool can never compete with Malaga.

I can see were you are coming from over the 27%. But looking at it another way, the high load factors look good when you realise JET2 cut the Alicante and Malaga route in anticipation of decreased passenger numbers - Looking at MUFC_stats they don't look ridiculous when load numbers matches the airlines expectations.
