Is it me or are we getting new route news almost on a weekly basis ?

I have never known anything like it in in 30 years !
Well, just for reference, lets look at how good 2015 is set to be:

Already changed/started:

Cathay Pacific started Dec 8th, so, lets face it, 2015 is its bedding in period.
Emirates upgraded to 2xA388 1xB77W on 1st Feb
Qatar Airways re-added 4 flights to make 14 weekly on Feb 1st.
Etihad in a period of 2 daily B77W
Easyjet started Funchal.
Icelandair increased to 4 weekly
Flybe added 5 flights a week to Amsterdam

Still to come:

Flybe increase several routes such as BHD/NQY/MXP and more. Add new route to Bergerac.
Easyjet to add EFL/OPO/MRS/PSA/SPU add 9th based aircraft
Ryanair add 6 weekly Stuttgart, recently added Eindhoven.
Jet2 add Enfidha, Antalya, Kefalonia, Malta and Zante. Add A330 from Air Asia X.
Enter Air base B737 to run Zante, Heraklion and Preveza.
Condor add Bourgas and Heraklion.
Thomas cook add Miami and New York JFK. Increase several short haul routes.
Thomson add Alghero and Keflavik. Use B787 on many short haul routes.
Delta/Virgin add New York JFK, VS runs Atlanta. Increases to MCO and LAS, including use of A340-600 on LAS.
American Airlines use B767-300 on JFK
Air Canada Rouge increase Toronto to 6 weekly.
Iraqi Airways to start Erbil and Sulamanya
Egyptair re-start Cairo
Saudi Arabian keep 4 weekly increase into Summer.
Aurigny increase to 3 daily on Mon/Sat/Sun
Vueling to start Barcelona.
Iberia Express to start Madrid
Pegsus begin scheduled flights to Dalaman
Turkish increase to 3 daily
Nouvelair Tunisie to return on Enfidha
Correndon run Antalya charters
Small Planet increase based operations
Denim Air to run 1 weekly Innsbruck

Still waiting for confirmation:

Hainan should be announced in the next 14 days according to MAN.
Montenegro Airlines were quoted in several news articles as starting MAN, but havent yet added flights.
TCX to Boston and LAX (will be announced in May but 2016 start).
Austrian have apllied for MAN-VIE so hopefully follow through this time.

The deceases

AA to Charlotte has not returned
VS to end MAN-LHR ops
Monarch have ended several routes

All in all, not a bad year ahead, and, Im sure there are ones I have missed which would bulk out the list further (feel free to add)

ORD also returns on a 763.

Also BA are decreasing to 8 daily shuttle flights over the summer.

I hadn't put the ORD B767 on, as its been a B767 in summer for a few years now, so, not really an increase.

Monarch have ended several routes
I know they're losing 3 aircraft at MAN, but at least they will still be operating more than they did in the 2010/11 era

MONARCH

.

Losing 3 aircraft out of 11 is about 27% in terms of equipment but I suspect the reduction in the number of weekly departures may be quite a bit less than that as it's a number of the longer sector routes that have been dropped or frequencies reduced. That said, I guess the real indicator will be the change in seat capacity for Monarch over the summer, and the ACL start of Season Report when released should provide a better picture.

There is also the question of seat capacity taken by tour operators such as Cosmos. Did they use Monarch, and if so, are Monarch still providing all those seats or are other charter operators being used?

Given the increases in Small Planet, Germania and Enter Air, as well as flights from Pegasus, Corendon and Nouvelair, I suspect the package holiday market has been sealed up. Lets also not forget Thomson are using the B787 and Jet2 using the A330 on a few of the routes cut back by Monarch, so, the net loss isn't huge.

With the list of increases versus decreases I posted, it makes you wonder just what it will take for a glass half empty to be turned into a glass half full? I mean, Im all for balance, but it seems some people try hard to find the one thorn in a bed of roses......

Looking so far, LAS seems to be 3 weekly into November, but then stops until March (November makes sense as used the last LAS-MAN in October this year and it was 100% full both in and out, so, surely that 100% doesn't just disappear in what is a year round destination?)

MCO seems to just have random, almost 1 off flights in November and January.

Lets hope a full schedule comes off, there is still plenty of time.

For the record, I was responding to a specific comment about Monarch and actually trying to point out that the loss may be significantly less than a reduction of 3 aircraft would suggest. The list of gains for this year is very impressive as were some of the increases in pax numbers on long haul for January that I posted earlier. You do tend to pick on critical or negative posts as if those contributors never post anything other than bad news, which I would dispute. Not guilty m'lord.

Anyway, with a glass half empty, good news looks even better. It's like when United win and you expected them to lose!

Hainan

Would the Chinese New Year celebrations this week be an excellent time to announce a new service ?

One step forward, two steps back?

Stand 49 is to be reconfigured and enlarged to accept aircraft up to and including B767-300(W). As part of the same project, Stand 50 will be permanently withdrawn from use and converted into a remote bussing gate.

Estimated to be done by 20/3/15.

So losing a stand for making another one bigger?

Any plans of making a multi-stand there just like on 44 L/C/R? That can take the A330 (or 747 for that matter) when needed but then takes two smaller aircraft the rest of the day, which seems to work quite well.

Seems strange considering t3 is mainly narrow body a/c, as far as I know only 2 or 3 wide bodies a day, which are easily accommodated at 54 and 55

AA/US will have 3 widebodies in at the same time this summer (332 and 2 x 763), so I presume this work will have been planned for a while

Stand 49 used to take B767-300s with BA I think? Seems odd the winglets would prevent 50 being used for the likes of DHC8s or Embraers. One thing that is a concern is that the numer of airbridges seems to be steadily reducing. Am I right in saying 50/51/52 have had them removed? They were missing on my last trip up.

50/51/52 had their airbridges removed years ago, they aren't required except for the odd Flybe Embraer maybe.

Drawings for the new (international) bussing area at stand 50 look fairly decent, a lot better than the current gate 56.
