CX launch (original)

October 1989, if I remember correctly, Spanners. 'Twas the first 747-400 to visit MAN, beating SQ by a few days. Twice or thrice weekly via a European stop. Gosh that was a long time ago!

It was a daily B747-400, mainly alternating between a stop in AMS(CX270) or CDG(CX260). Later a weekly stop was made in ZRH(CX290) when Wednesdays were switched to A340.
Even then, always had good loads considering it was capacity restricted by the euro stop.

My July 1989 copy of Flight Check shows Hong Kong was flown Tuesday and Saturday operated by BA 019 departing 15.30.

In July 1991, the flight operated Tuesday and Friday on CX 288 departing 10.10.
(don't have the 1990 edition)

It doesn't show the intermediate stop for CX or BA (did the BA start or call at LHR?)

The BA flight to HKG started as a Tristar via Munich, Dubai and Bangkok. Later it became a 747 via LHR and (I think) either Bombay or Delhi. Neither lasted very long.

288 would be via FRA, then switched to AMS/CDG (270/260), a bit before my time though!

Flew MAN CDG on the CX 744 in the early 90's in the front. Amazing food and service for a 55 minute flight. Little wonder the 'double-drop' didn't last much longer.

March 2017 Traffic

Some rough figures being reported.

11.4% growth over the previous 12 months (+2.7m passengers).

1.9m passengers in March 2017, up 10.1% compared to March 2016 (apparently this is particularly good as Easter is later this year).

Rolling 12 month total of 26,202,945, per business traveller website.

as per the above from Dobbo Dobbo. This article contains those numbers and, interestingly, reports a doubling of passengers to the US.

I suspect that will rise further. Previous years they bring out any new destinations/large increases a couple of weeks later with a press release.

Hmmm...so assuming the UIA service continues into the Winter Kiev goes from nothing to 7 weekly by two airlines, one of which is Ryanair. Kiev is a fantastic destination in the summer, but gets extremely cold in the winter.
Always great to see new routes and more airlines starting up, but me thinks this one could be a tad over served if both airlines fly through the winter months.

Virgin Atlantic extends Manchester ? New York to year-round service in W17 :: Routesonline

Virgin Atlantic in recent schedule update has converted Manchester – New York JFK service to year-round operation, as the airline maintains A330 operation on/after 29OCT17. In Winter 2017/18 season, service operates 4 weekly (Day x136), switching to 3 weekly (Day 247) from 14JAN18 to 22MAR18. Joint-venture partner Delta will no longer operate this route.

VS127 MAN1035 – 1315JFK 333 247
VS128 JFK1930 – 0700+1MAN 333 247
I lose track. Is that a good thing or not?

All NW TATL passengers I recently spoken to now using Thomas Cook by default.

Another very long crew duty at night. How alert will they be approaching KBP on a snowy morning after reporting 1900 the evening before?

3-4 weekly VS A333 instead of a daily (mostly) DL 757. To me that's a backward step (others may disagree) especially since AA has suspended JFK for next winter as well. Hopefully just a temporary blip.

In terms of the VS JFK, it means weekly seats doesn't take a huge hit, but frequency does take the hit.

The big hit comes to ATL, which has its frequency halved but same aircraft, so, the W17 figures for that route will be dire compared to W16.

As said, we now have a situation where we have more flights to Houston than one of our longest standing routes, ATL. A bizzare situation to find ourselves in really.
