Heathrow's case for being 'essential' to the North is increasingly flaky. Far from being essential it is now not even very important. It is simply one of many alternative ways to reach the shrinking list of destinations not served direct from Manchester, and not even the most attractive option in many cases. T5 is a nice enough terminal in which to transfer if that is indeed the one on offer. But the connecting flight gives barely time to settle in to your seat, and on a single-class single-aisle aircraft. Not great if you're a premium traveller compared to the wide-body alternatives or the business class product on the EU flag carriers out of MAN
I am not anti-Heathrow, it is good for London and the southeast, essential even, but a third runway is far too expensive and the national case for it does not stack up.

Dear Northern businessman
"Would you like a a triple daily air link to Heathrow. "
Yes of course.
"We at HAL can deliver this"
Great but you are not an airline.
"Let's not get bogged down in small detail"
When can we have this.
" about 15 years possibly 12 "
OK great we will support that.

"Would you like a triple daily airport link to Heathrow."

£2 billion however "
2 million ?
"No 2 billion"
How much is that?
"Well it's 2 billion, £2000,000,000m but with a massive return in 12 years"
How much is the massive return
"Er can't be precise"
But you can guarantee the route 100%"
"Well sort of....can we have your dosh upfront please"
Your having a laugh
"No we are deadly serious"
stuff that.......

Interesting developments indeed. Hainan looking to take a stake in Monarch.

New destination?
Can't recall New Orleans on our boards unless back in the days of BOAC.

Hmmmm. .. record stuck ?
Maybe best sit on the naughty chair with Mr Holland-Kaye
A lot has clearly happened since your last intervention, especially Mr Holland-Kaye's mathematical genius or lack of it. Fortunately Willie Walsh has come to the conclusion many of us grasped 18 months ago.
"While you were away...."
Inaccurate comment by Heathrow CEO,
A robust response by Manchester Airport CEO
.... and now "recognition" not only that Heathrow is not just looking for a subsidy from the taxpayer for surrounding infastructure......
BUT wait for it , an additional "Government Gaurantee" ( I think that sounds suspiciously like it might be us again), to cover the cost of a 3rd runway, a prohibitively expensive option, which thank goodness appears close to being replaced, if this article is accurate by "another" prohibitively expensive option.
Let's not mention hair-brained !
"The emerging view of airlines and of the City is that: the third runway is prohibitively expensive; it cannot be phased; that Heathrow airport would struggle to raise the £4.2 billion-£8.4 billion equity component; and in extremis it could require a government guarantee from HM Treasury."
Oh hang on isn't that the conclusion that us "armchair experts" came to as well ?
http://www.travelweekly.co.uk/articl...extension-plan
All highly significant for the North of England as was made clear by the Manchester Airport spokesperson.

I would contest IAG supporting a mega long Northern runway and suggestions that HAL would need government support should they poceed with the generally preferred option is indeed a "revalation" !
I would agree it's getting more desperate by the day however. Fortunately our MPs have other much more pressing matters.

T1
We know T1 is creaking and long term will be resolved. Passing through T1 today, we also know the 30 minute line up to pass the UK border isn't the fault of MAG.
However, the age old problem of non working escalators. Multiple buckets around baggage reclaim belts and half the skyline walkways being u/s are entirely fixable.
Please don't let the the terminal fall down before you knock it down.

Interesting news that Hainan are evaluating Dublin.
When it goes daily ex Man could Dublin be a tag on 3 days a week ?
There again maybe we need all the capacity ?

No construction work around T1, they are currently at the phase of adding the utilities to where the T2 extension will be (gas, electric, water etc).
Passed through T1 in the past month, genuinely no issues.

I notice that Toulouse seems to be more popular in recent days, with Easyjet starting a daily Luton service, and Flybe restarting a daily Birmingham service. It starts to make MAN's twice weekly Jet2 offering look a little paltry - maybe one that will see an increase at some point?

How have been the passenger numbers on MAN-RTM recently? With VLM now gone, BE will need to bring in some own (larger) metal, if available. Does the route make sense on a 70seater?

Neos 767-300 operating for vueling today on the BCN route, noticed a titan 767 operating for them recently as well, have they had a sudden surge and need larger aircraft or are they short of aircraft? Still nice to see a different tail at MAN

All this against a background of an unelected body (Transport for London) who have had their funding slashed by the Treasury hunting around for some nice private sector-led projects they can mug to pay for a bunch of schemes they want to build but currently can't afford (again I'm shocked).
Part of me wants to cry because of the inability of the wheels of government to knock some heads together and get this done for a sensible price. The other part wants to laugh because at the end of the day it won't be my taxes (or yours for that matter) that contribute towards additional infrastructure at Heathrow. We don't generate enough tax revenue in the north to pay for the services and infrastructure we get now as it is let alone have any 'spare' to put towards projects down south.
And none of this directly impacts on Manchester's ability to attract new long haul services as has been ably demonstrated in recent months.
