Thank you Johnny F@rt Pants for putting some perspective on this Christmas's airport non-story. Love the username by the way. With a name like that I'm slightly surprised you couldn't de-ice your 737-800 yourself using the..ahem..."reverse cycle rear mounted afterburner method"
Perhaps LN-KGL with his intimate knowledge of winter ops equipment could advise if such a thing exists? And if not, johnny and Logohu could go into business. I know of a few fine sources of such gas and hot air.

The result was very clear. The infrared "oven" failed miserably. The ice melted on top of the fuselage, wings and elevators, but the meltwater refroze and formed new icicles under the wings, under the fuselage and under the elevators, and the undergarriage was coated with black ice.
My advice to MAN would be: chemical deicing takes time but it works; infrared doesn't work at all.

Qatari 702 B77W A7-BAK JFK-DOH squawk 7700 over Stockport, is currently descending and turning back towards MAN, looks to be inbound.
*edit* caught the back end of ATC conversation confirming they are dumping fuel over the Irish sea, not sure what the problem is.
Sounds like a medical, 6 passengers requiring ambulance treatment (? Turbulence)

Finished the dump cleared inbound via MERSEY

As stated, de-icing at MAN is done by either Airline Services or Swissport (ex Servisair). At the start of the summer I saw an Easyjet de-icing rig knocking around but not sure what happened to that, or who's it was?
De-icing fluid is liquid gold and a massive money maker, on the grand scheme of things MAN is usually pretty decent when it comes to de-icing. I often hear complaints of much bigger de-icing queues at larger airports who more frequently get snow.
As for snow clearance, again, I don't think we're worse than any other UK airport. Few years ago MAN invested in a lot of shiny new snow clearance equipment, I've yet to see it being used properly as it hasn't snowed.

NY to Doha via Manchester
From the Daily Mail today:
"The New York to Doha flight had already completed about two thirds of its journey"
Is Manchester two-thirds of the way along the route from NY to Doha? Both route and distances don't seem to add up here. Anyone care to comment?

It's a Daily Mail "two thirds". Ie. Not necessarily connected with reality.
I see from another thread that the Daily Mail is reporting the diversion was due to a "disruptive passenger", yet in this thread it was reported as 2 medical cases. I know which one I would believe!
Incidentally, there's not much wrong with the route. Whenever I am back on home turf, it is quite normal to see the Emirates & Qatar flights from NY go overhead the Wirral, usually early morning.
For example; yesterday EK236 from Chicago to Dubai flew that route, crossing the Wirral at around 08:15. The Etihad flight from JFK followed 20 minutes later with flights from the US to the Emirates following in quick succession.

Can see this being an interesting debate...
DL new JFK will continue to PIT with same a/c and flight number. Rumblings are DL/VS looking at 2 or 3 more routes ex MAN.
Interestingly it seems if you put your ear to the ground that BA/AA JV is worried by the potential of DL/VS at MAN, and waterside are considering defensive action. Depending who you talk to that 'could' include action at MAN by BA themselves !! Sounds mad I know, and I personally doubt it as I can't see any success here for BA, but seems the least that is happening is BA is considering it's options regarding MAN.

Longhaul for BA ex MAN would only work with feed. BA only fly to LHR with the sunair services as a bonus.
To make it work ex MAN I suspect IAG would need to buy flybe and use them to feed a longhaul operation.
Certainly running it as they did with the last attempt isn't viable.

Again I'd agree. I doubt with MANs strength going east we need not even talk about that direction, but If I were IAG and looking to secure share going west from MAN the only sensible option would be using AA to their unserved US hubs, MIA, DFW, LAX maybe...anything else would be futile IMO.

According to "Elaf securities" and a post on a another forum, Iraqi Airways are planning to start Baghdad-MAN flights from March 2015. Would be an interesting route and Iraq underserved from MAN having previously had various airline operating the route (Viking Airlines, Hermes ..)
Will be interesting to see if this one happens.

Iraqi seem to be doing reasonably well at LGW with 2 weekly Baghdad, 2 weekly Sulaymaniyah and 1 weekly Erbil on their 738's so hopefully they will be able to make a success of MAN as well. I expect the flights would stop in Vienna on the inbound as the existing ones do.
