Wow - Southside from Stansted - you really should be a politician with all that meaningless waffle. £25 from STN to Reus - £25 return Reus to STN. Great yield!! By the way - have you read the reviews of how much people love all those shops in STN - not??

Loss making airport
If you want to know anything about Southend and how successful it is look at the owner's recent (and past) financials. The airport has never turned a profit. Pax numbers are dwindling. In the last report and accounts the 2.5m pax by 2018 target was dropped.
You're all better off discussing why the airport isn't a success, not debating if it is or isn't a success - it simply isn't!

Nope...sorry EssexMan61...still not doing it for me I`m afraid.....Just good ole tit for tat now.Just v quickly tho... in reality the Jet2 base is very successful & with even more a/c added next year plus the addition of the A330 for 4 N.Y. Xmas flights...so not too shabby..& oh really really Jet2 sought the London market......so totally market driven, they wanted it & they took the strategic commercial decision which has paid big style...To quote one seat price out of over 900,000 on offer from STN is a wee bit meaningless to say the least......Oh & ExpressFlight perhaps the sight of the commercial contract for a 4th unit would mean more to the both of us...you perhaps would assume my first thoughts....I would leave it to you to assure the forum in due course I was unjustified in my thinking...Gotta go now,we are boring eveyone... Good Luck tho....SS

Irrelevant! The financials tell you all you need to know. Zero profit and year on year losses. The airport has not been a success under the stewardship of Stobart Group. I applaud them for trying but they got it wrong with the easyJet contract.

It highlights the paranoia on this thread when asdf1234 posts a single far more erudite post than all my contorted posts together & we are labelled as "working together"....I assure you EssexMan61 there are unacceptably to this thread, posters who can & will clarify the proper facts & better than me....unpalatable as they may be to you....get over it.....I state I have no connection with asdf....whatsoever...He is far cleverer & succinct than I...

Hmmm....I'm not sure that your false modesty in deference to asdf1234 is totally justified. Is that not the same asdf1234 who wrote in December 2010:
"I for one don't believe that EZY or RYR are looking at SEN.
And it is rumoured that the last thing the owners at SEN want are LoCo's such as the Orangemen"

Correct, and the next interim results will start to reveal the true cost of this folly into airline ops.

OK, so SEN shot off both feet when they struck a deal with easyjet (according to many). So isn't that more or less the polar opposite of the critics who say SEN was just a vanity project for a particular easyjet exec. who wanted to become a local hero no matter that the deal was folly for the airline.
An apology to southside: Had I picked up earlier that you were from Bishops Stortford, I would have grasped the subliminal nature of your posts.

Last year I read that Copenhagen was Luton's busiest route with 767,000 passengers. Even I got change out of a £10 note as I headed to my least favourite airport. This year the route has almost disappeared as the losses mounted so I always take with a pinch of salt the armchair experts here who just count passengers bums on seats as a measure of success.

Holy Guacamole - telling by the amount of traffic this thread generates, Southend is slated to overtake Heathrow in the near future as London's most important airport:

LHR, LGW, MAN etc. have more movements that they can shake a stick at, the staff are probably wishing that some of them would bugger off, it's the regional airports, well their staff and/or enthusiasts, that wish for more movements and post regarding it here and other places.

I know, my remark was meant to be tongue in cheek. It appears as if the smaller and less anonymous an airport, the more locals take an interest in its development (or a lack of) and populate forums to discuss the airports untiringly and zealously.
More back to topic - one thing I have been wondering about is how volatile the route network is as far as niche destinations like Rennes, Groningen or Caen are concerned which are predominantly inbound markets. If these destinations work well, one has to wonder at what point the likes of easyJet or Ryanair will move in and start serving these destinations from LGW and STN. I guess that such destinations have quite a different dynamic compared to the usual staple of routes for which SEN is simply the 4th, 5th or 6th London airport to offer them (stuff like AMS, VCE, MXP or BUD), mainly catering for outbound traffic from a local catchment area.

No argument with that logic but profit is a secondary concern for Stobart. They are much more focused on value creation.
Arguably bums on seats is a good measure of success. Every PAX has a value. Stobart have access to a much longer chain than most, they own everything from the car park to landing at the destination airport!
When discussing pax numbers The word yield is bounced around as some magic invisible number that holds the secret to how profitable a flight is. True for EZY but Stobart has to be viewed differently to any other airline because their core business is much more than air carriage. The airport and the airline are inextricably linked and have to viewed as such.
