The thing is, Glyn generally talks a lot of sense and he has the data to support his claims. The only issue is when you start talking about your main airline partners (EZY) and suggest that they could leave STN because of FR dominance, it just looks a bit desperate and might not be a stance EZY want to hear. On the other hand, it does show intent to grow the relationship further.
So why not EZY try something similar and make SEN an away from the mainstream airports significant base, after all stranger things have happened!
BTW, and admittedly it is some 16 years since I was last at SEN but ... where the bl00dy hell are they going to park 20 Airbus's?
Southend v Stansted
Advantages for Southend
No Ryanair
Close cooperation with airport management
Better customer experience at the moment due to low passenger numbers.
Maybe lower fees
Short walk to station
Short walk to plane.
No slot restrictions (edit to add this one)
Disadvantages for Southend
18 hour airport and not 24 hours thus reducing flexibility in airline operations.
20 hour terminal
No public transport links by rail or coach for the airports busiest periods for the city it claims to serve.
Slowest rail link to London
No dedicated non stop rail service
Miles away from the nearest motorway
Catchment area in two directions only
Cat 1 ILS
Short narrow runway limiting destinations that can be served
I am sure I have missed a few in either camp and there would be some advantages for easyjet to close Stansted but Southend could not offer Easyjet the sort of operation it has at Stansted.

Are we moving the debate away from Glyn Jones' vision of the future through orange tinted glasses, probably designed to keep the opportunities LSA offers out there? And I'm guessing knowing his apparent 'loose cannon comments' wouldn't cause any issue with easyjet, for reasons best known to them.
Surely, if there were discussions taking place about easyjet moving their STN base to SEN, then doubling the number of aircraft, such a move would hardly be casually suggested by Glyn Jones in a trade piece.
If we are entitled to read between the lines, it could mean that SEN is in with a decent shout of seeing some growth from easyjet in the next year or two.
As always with LSA (and life I guess) seeing is believing, but let's hope the airport is about to start a period of sustained growth.

Look at FR, they based their operations at airports/airfields away from the mainstream airports, Charleroi and Hahn to name but two, and they made successes from such bases.
So why not EZY try something similar and make SEN an away from the mainstream airports significant base, after all stranger things have happened!

...and could SEN cope with 20 easyjet aircraft all wanting to leave Southend first thing in the morning? Luton has 20 departures by 7:20 with all but one easyjet aircraft leaving by 7:30 and the terminal, which is meant to handle 12 million passengers but has 15 million passengers can't cope with that first wave.

LTNman Catchment area in two directions only
Admittedly there's only Foulness east of us......
LTNman probably discounted Barling Magna as it has its own airstrip.
After reflection, I don't think Glyn Jones has said anything that he hasn't said before, it's just he's talking in far more grandiose terms. I like the analogy with the dam, it's a good way of explaining away the lack of operators, while telling us they're definitely coming any time soon.
I had hoped the airport would give the 'proximity to the City' and 'lack of slots elsewhere' rhetoric a rest, perhaps try another angle. No-one seems convinced by the 'London Airport' line no matter how many facts are thrown out there. And it definitely does not automatically follow that SEN will have airlines flooding in when capacity elsewhere is full.

There's no stopping Mr Jones once he's in full stride.

The Echo engaging in Chinese whispers again. The first article's statement was more guarded about EZY: "the carrier could subsequently look to pull out of the Ryanair-dominated Stansted and perhaps redeploy as many as 20 aircraft at Southend."

What about wake turbulence, Heathrow has a movement every 90 seconds per runway (in total one every 45 seconds) .. there's no issue with Wake at 36 movements per hour especially as virtually all the aircraft will be in the medium wake category
