Metroliners are becoming as common as A319s at SEN lately. Strange that larger cargo aircraft seem to shun the place now, apart from the occasional An-26 - presumably there is a good reason?

You would have thought that Stobart (being a haulage company) might be able to get some more regular cargo operations into SEN, albeit small scale European flights. There is scope to expand cargo ops especially when the new business park is completed.

Also I see the National Express coach service will end on the 20th September... that lasted long!

That's a real shame about the coach service. Personally, I think it would have done better it it called at a few key stops along the way such as Basildon and Romford, but possibly not. I guess National Express will be happy to return if the airport starts to deliver on its promises of X2.5 pax.

Strange that larger cargo aircraft seem to shun the place
Cargo aircraft, besides the courier stuff, tend to take off, and indeed land, at maximum payload, not merely a case of a bum on a seat and perhaps hand baggage and/or a 15kg suitcase, cargo aircraft they fill from floor to ceiling, often containerised or palletised, and operating a maximum weights they need a longer runway than passenger aircraft operations.

A slight thread drift of Manston becoming the south-east's answer to it's air freight problems, Manston has a mere 9,016ft runway, if that is all that is required for cargo operations then why did LUX extend their runway to 13,123ft for CargoLux B747F operations?

In a previous life I flight planned a DC8-62F PIK/BGR, I needed to plan for maximum, rather than standard, flap settings just to get the thing off the ground and PIK has a 9,797ft runway.

So if the freighters are shunning 'the place' there is a very good reason for it ... runway length!

What's happening on the Stobart/CityJet takeover? It seems to have gone very quiet. I've been away (on holiday and without internet availability) for a week or so and wonder if I've missed anything. Last I heard was that it should be finalised "soon". Any news?

There have certainly been no public announcements yet but the vibes that I am getting are that there will be before very long.

Hopefully the vibes also suggest that there will be something for SEN in this.

A stream of biz jets into SEN yesterday including Lord "You're Fired" himself. Diversions? Or a sign that attempts to attract more bizjets are succeeding?

I see Vueling are launching 3x weekly RNS-LGW, more competition for the SEN route.

Rennes
Whilst nobody has total rights on any one route, I do find it sad that from a small city/area similar to Rennes, an airline like Vueling (A320s), are able to see extra demand to London without killing off the smaller operators. On some routes it works well to have good competition and attracts passengers onto profitable routes for all of the airlines, but with Rennes either the SEN or LCY for sure will suffer. Cannot wait for CityJet news(if there is any).

Your figures are interesting and I am sure accurate. So with all those people living there and Stobart/FlyBe struggling to fill an ATR, in theory you need an area of 5 million people to fill an A320 on another London route?

Population and "Market" are not necessarily the same thing, though.
