I was just looking at another forum and saw it first posted... what a coincidence...
Seems to be a borrow until a replacement for IST is announced.
Theres going to be a lot of empty seats. None of the three NYC roytes last year ran anywhere near full.

Yes, Surprised at jump in capacity given that 1 in 5 seats at height of Edinburgh festival last year were empty. As you say just making productive use until redeployed.

Probably also worthwhile noting that the combined passenger numbers from UA to EWR and ORD plus AA to JFK last August was 34,817. Not bad at all really. The combined load factor for all of these services was around 84%.

An upgrade before the route has even commenced can only be good news. DL have one of the most diverse route networks going, plenty other places this aircraft could have been sent. Demand must be strong.
Disagree. EDI and GLA both record consistently high load factors to EWR year round, as can be verified by CAA data. AA JFK was a new route last year but did well enough and must've performed satisfactorily as it is operating an extended season this year.
DL should do fine, especially as this is as much about them maintaining market share after the demise of VSLR, and providing skyteam members with a more direct option than via CDG/AMS as it is trying to poach from other carriers. The upgrade says it all tbh, they're obviously not worried.

Delta were beaten off both EDI-ATL and EDI-JFK by a Continental who got the Scottish market in a way DL didn't. I would suggest this is simply an attempt to take as much market share as possible in year one, in an attempt to see which one of UA/AA blinks first.
Of course it may be there's room for all in high summer but outside that, Scotland has been, and remains very seasonl to North America. Any summer bloodbath on yields will affect strategic direction for the next year. i.e. "Should we redeploy this asset somewhere more profitable?"

Norwegian looking at US flights
Interesting development as I'd have thought Manchester or Birmingham would have been the next step.

This doesn't surprise me. I was at a lunch in London a couple of months ago where the speaker was the CEO of Norwegian and he was very clear about his philosophy which is, as far as possible, to link destinations both of which are attractive to tourists so that he gets demand in both directions on a route. As such, whether or not some of us might not like it, US tourists are more likely to be attracted to visit EDI than GLA/MAN/BHX etc so EDI was always likely to get the nod as the second UK departure point after London. At the same lunch he also said that if LGW gets a second runway he will build up to a fleet of 50 787s based there plus a multitude of 737s.

Excellent news for Edinburgh and their successful team thinking out the box beyond euro routes. Great news also for Scottish tourism in general and options for outbound pax to additional US destinations. EDI is very accessible and should easily attract many outbound pax from the central belt as well as the east coast and north England. Scotlands long haul gateway soon???

The term "long haul gateway" died in 1989 with PIK and "Gateway Scotland".
Great catch for EDI if true but they really need to put in more gates, airbridges and contact gates. International Arrivals are often sub-par from a passeenger experience.

True SOE, still great news for Scotland though. Role on terminal investment at EDI, long overdue. Glasgow still classes itself as Scotlands long haul gateway in main press releases tho
