Or more likely providing capacity to meet demand. There are plenty of other places they could have sent a 767 after all.
Probably also worthwhile noting that the combined passenger numbers from UA to EWR and ORD plus AA to JFK last August was 34,817. Not bad at all really. The combined load factor for all of these services was around 84%.
