That was poo pood when a similar suggestion was made re the Middle East scenario at EDI?

Yes, the 'theories' about the Middle East airlines at EDI fits the same established logic too. So interpreting Rouge's entry to Glasgow-Toronto as an attempt to push Transat off the scene in Scotland, since the market can't possibly be big enough to sustain more than one carrier, wouldn't be ridiculed by the same worldly-wise philosophers, I assume?

Negative! AC Rouge schedule remains the same in 2016 as it is in 2015. 4x weekly to start ramping up to 5x weekly in the peak summer.

The route from EDI is doing well and the new route from GLA should compliment it nicely.

Was hoping that Rouge would have increased frequency to 6x or daily next year!
On the other hand what would be the chances of Westjet or indeed Air Transat starting EDI taking away the monopoly Rouge has?

I remember the days when we had Air Transat operating flights to GLA, EDI, PIK and ABZ from YYZ all booked through Globespan in the UK on the 757 and L1011's

Before that Worldways from all of them as well as Wardair from CWL and LBA. TS flew from EXT and couldn't make a weekly EDI pay at the same time AC dropped GLA.
Seems a dying market has stabilised and rebounded. It's good to be pleasantly surprised

Just out of curiosity when all of these Canadian services existed from the likes of EXT, CWL, ABZ and LBA were they catering to charter traffic going both ways (i..e Canadian travel agencies doing holidays in the UK and using various cities as start/end points and UK agencies serving multiple local markets) or was there really such high demand for people from Canada to these destinations?

The flights leaving the UK would presumably have been mainly holidaymakers going to Canada.

From CWL in the days of Nationair, Worldways, Ward Air, Air Transat and more recently Zoom there was quite a mixture, majority being VFR (visiting friends & relatives)....just hope Air Canada Rouge will have a serious look at CWL again as flights were always very popular and full and at one point 3 per week.

Back in the days of Wardair 747's/DC-10's to the major regional airports, it was VFR traffic, largely UK origin - 20 odd wheelchairs to meet a 747 wasn't uncommon...

Brussels airlines are sending their 'tin tin' A320 on 12th, morning flight. Not sure if it's been to EDI before?

There is no morning flight. 1455 and 2140 arrivals.

Although the later flight nightstops. Do you mean it arrives tonight and departs tomorrow morning?

There are some who think we have reached saturation point in the market now. I believe this to be totally untrue.

Look at a country like New Zealand with a population* (4.5 million) far less than Scotland (5.3 million) - *figures based on 2014 data

New Zealand can support several Intercontinental operators - far more than Scotland - and is a growing market where you will find as well as their own Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Qantas, Thai, Air China, China Airlines, China Eastern, China Southern, Hawaiian, Korean, LAN Airlines, Malaysian, Philippine, Virgin Australia and of course Emirates. Services between New Zealand and Australia could be compared with Scotland and Europe.

Another key factor will be the abolition of Air Passenger Duty in Scotland. This has the attract potential to encourage long haul airlines to make Scottish Airport an en-route stop to other worldwide destinations.

Let’s look at what might happen. Emirates is a candidate for expansion westward via GLA. They have already done it in Europe. Don’t be surprised if Cathay Pacific came in. As for US based carriers they should stop crying unfair subsidies, examine their own quality of service and look at the potential to use Scotland as a touch down to beyond Europe.

“If you build it he will come” is the prophetic quote from Field of Dreams. Build these routes and the passengers and the economic growth that they bring will land on our shores. The future is growth.

You neglect to mention that the nearest international airport to Auckland, NZ's international gateway, is Sydney which is over 3 hours flying time away, while the UK's major international hubs, LHR, LGW & MAN are all less than 1 hour away. You can drive from MAN to Scotland in less time than it takes to fly from Auckland to Sydney. You are not comparing like with like when you compare Scotland to NZ in this instance.

Given that New Zealand is a long way from just about anywhere, Auckland is bound to have a good network of flights connecting it with points in the Asia/Pacific region. Scotland is not isolated and is well connected to points in its own region - Europe. I think Norway is a perhaps a better comparison.

Despite the presence on English airports reasonably nearby I still reckon the Scottish population can support similar international traffic as New Zealand... And attract passengers from England.
