"Scandinavian airline SAS AB is considering the use of other airports in the London-region after selling two slot-pairs at London's main airport Heathrow.

Whilst SAS at Luton would be welcome, is it likely?
For any secondary Londn airport operation, their focus will be on point to point operations. Presumably CPH to LON would be their busiest route in this regard. LTN is soon to have 6 x daily flights to the Danish capital with EZY & FR so it's hard to see them taking those two on. I guess Stockholm & Oslo could work but if I were a betting man, I think they're more likely to opt for STN

I'd be inclined to agree, didn't SAS have quite a long history of operations from STN? They served LGW from Bergen until a couple of years ago but I couldn't see them starting flights from there directly against DY, and on CPH, EZY as well.

The other option is giving LCY another go but they've tried that before & pulled out. If routes to other Scandinavian destinations are to start from LTN, I think it's more likely they'll be with easyJet than SAS

Well done to VLM for restoring WAT-LTN as a double daily service. The route is now back where it logically belonged all the time.

So that's 13 new routes to begin between now and the summer season. Heading towards 11.5, maybe even 12m?

More good news is that the roundabout at M1 junction 10a/ Airport Way is no more after the westbound carriageway was closed for the weekend.

There is still maybe another 2 months of work to finish off all the loose ends but for the first time in a year the evening rush hour traffic jam that often started at around 3:30 was gone tonight with free flowing traffic.

VLM

That's fantastic.

I never even thought of VLM as a potential operator for the WAT route. I imagine they got a really good deal to base the aircraft in WAT with the airport desperate to get the route back. I hope it's as successful as it once was for Aer Arran.

It would be great to see them base an aircraft at LTN too and have a go at Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Man and maybe Rotterdam and Antwerp too

Seems both Ryanair & easyjet have decided to stick with 2 daily flights to/from Copenhagen with the start of the summer timetable. The third daily flight with each airline appears to have been withdrawn.

Copenhagen

I thought the 3rd daily flight for each airline didn't start until the next winter season?

Hopefully both will take a more sensible approach. There's no way the route could sustain 6 daily flights

@walp,

"Hopefully both will take a more sensible approach. There's no way the route could sustain 6 daily flight".

134,198 passengers flew between Copenhagen and four London Airports during January 2015. Luton handled just 7,789 of those passengers!

Trust me Luton has the potential to gain at minimum 10% of that traffic which I am sure will become a reality when Ryanair launches it's service to the route.

I do however agree with you that VLM should look into the possibility of re-introducing Luton to IOM, JER, GCI and in turn connect Luton to Rotterdam and Antwerp. In effect VLM (who I have flown with and recommend) could operate a base at Luton.

The airport operator is doing a fantastic job at the moment and whilst they have foreseen passenger levels rising to 11.4 million passengers during 2015 I hope as Dannyboy39 states they may reach 12 million.

Luton has always had few airlines operating regular passenger services. With this week's news the S15 total has risen to 12:

EasyJet
Wizzair
Monarch
Ryanair
Thomson
El Al
Atlas Jet
Tarom
Sun Express
La Compagnie
Air Nostrum
VLM

Plus regular freight flights from

West Air
Air Contractors/DHL
MNG

Is this a record?

@Lee Baker Street my point about CPH was driven by the fact that no other route from LTN has 6 daily flights so why CPH? That said, if there's demand then the EZY & FR flights will start to tap into that and this time next year, LTN will have a decent share of the market.

I think there's a real opportunity for VLM to create a niche operation at LTN on thinner routes like IOM, JER & European routes into France, Belgium, Holland etc. Hopefully WAT is just the beginning
