This is the first time that the June total has ever exceeded 1 million passengers.

Fantastic Figures!

Luton has experienced fantastic figures for June and the rolling 12 months.

I think the rolling 12 months has produced the second best figure of all time handled at the airport?

Interestingly MAG who operate STN keep stating how well they are doing yet fail to mention they still remain quite a few million passengers short of their airport's history highest peak where as Luton currently only need 6 movements per day to gain it's highest figure!

As predicted Luton will shortly regain it's rightful 5th position as the UK's busiest airport...

I'm not trying to turn this into a "STN is better than LTN" debate, but YOU fail to mention that STN has recorded a higher growth rate than LTN for some months now, with an 11.7% increase in June.

It's hardly MAG's fault that the BAA monopoly damaged STN for 5 years on the trot through their neglectful management. It will understandably take some time for them to get back to 24 mppa, but I think they'll do it in time. Interestingly... MAG have actually revealed today that STN in performing better than they expected...

MAG says Stansted growth outperforms expectations - FT.com

But back to LTN. Great news that the June stats have seen double digit % growth. It's even more impressive to see that LTN and STN can both grow strongly alongside each other.

Does anyone know how well Tarom are doing at LTN. Is it any better loads than LHR or worse.

Does atlasjet have a 75% load or less.

Luton's rolling 12-month figures were over 10 million in every month from Feb 2008 to Jan 2009 inclusive.

However the latest results are the best outside that 'golden' period (narrowly beating Jan 2008).

B737-8:

June 2013: LHR - Iasi = 1065 pax
June 2014: LTN - Iasi = 1264 pax

No idea if the number of flights is comparable though

To those interested in the absolute number of passengers at LTN: best not to get too focussed on beating EDI and league tables; an airport can always 'buy' passengers by giving an airline a 3 year 'zero airport costs' deal, much more important to focus on the long term sustainability of existing routes and growth plans for the future.

Regardless of passenger totals for me EDI feels like a better airport for that passenger experience than LTN. Actually so does Stansted and Birmingham so it will be interesting to see how Luton ends up after its phase one expansion. At the moment there is hardly a seat in departures as every inch of space seems to have been turned into retail space.

It will also be interesting to see how the development work will take place without bringing the airport to a standstill. Using the M1 junction 10 - Airport Way upgrade as an example the road is a nightmare at peak times and even outside peak times.

Can't help but think there will be some bad times ahead for Luton's passengers.

Did you expect them to say anything else? MAG overpaid for Stansted, and they are desperate to keep their investors and "stakeholders" on-side. This explains their hasty decision a few months ago to publicise a "deal" with EasyJet that hasn't materialized.

I think MAG are finding it difficult to attract new serious users to STN because of Ryanair's domination. I wonder if Cyprus Airways will stay long enough to start paying full charges to STN?

Apologies for thread-creep.

Well if Cyprus Airways decide to leave STN when their charges go up. They'd be very welcome at LTN. I well remember the days when they were a regular, albeit with charters. It would be great to see them at the airport again.

Grrr

I have used Jct 10 three return trips non-peak in the last three weeks and sailed to/from the airport jam free.

Try it heading for the airport in the morning rush hour as the queue starts on the M1 or heading for the M1 from about 4pm until 6:30pm as the queue starts before Gypsy Lane.

The AWACS just used Luton again, I also noted it a few other times over this last month. Is there any reason LTN in particular gets this lovely plane using it for touch and go's?

So you would rather there was no short term pain, for the longer term ease of access? Road works slow cars down, unavoidable I am afraid.

The scale of the ground works required is massive and I personally have travelled three times non-peak and had ZERO delay.

Bits and pieces

Quite agree Buster, you have to have some pain to gain. Was up at the airport a few times in the last month when back in ´´dear old Blighty´´. Everything seemed to be workling very well as far as I could see land side and was amazed at the number of people travelling. No hold-ups although did not use the spur on the M1 so cannot comment on that and did not fly so what it was like airside again I cannot comment. ATC seemed to be doing a sterling job with the very large number of executive aircraft using the airport.
Looked into a couple of French regional airports on the way up from Spain - free parking and very relaxed and no sodding flourescent jackets! On the return by ferry and road first time somebody asked to look at my passport was when we stopped overnight at a hotel in the middle of Spain no boarder checks at Dover - I didn´t know the UK had joined Shenghen!

Did I say that, I don't think so? I agree, no gain without pain and the work is long over due so will be worth while.

With the completion date set for April 2015 it will tie in with hopefully the start of the major road works in the CTA including construction of the new dual carriageway under the taxiway.

No Ryanair Canary Island Routes This Winter...(?)

Was trying to find a winter sunshine escape for November or December, and knew from previous years Ryanair has operated a few flights a week to all the islands...

The Ryanair booking system are showing nothing for this winter, and either got to use another carrier or fly from another airport!

It only leaves Thomson serving the Islands with a few flights a week.

That seems a pretty poor show for the airport, considering the Canaries are the most popular UK holiday destination during the winter. Is it too close to the winter season for easyJet to consider adding routes?
