The larger plan doesn't show how the buses and coaches will exit the coach station.
If it is assumed it will be similar to now then they have to move from the left lane to the right in a much shorter distance to get out of the way of cars heading for the drop off.
I really do pity the guy/ girl that turns up at peak and wants to get to the MSCP lane with possibly six lanes of drop off traffic and buses trying to get out.
Regarding the traffic light proposal, why not just use temporary ones similar to ones used for road works today for a one /two hour peak just to get the coaches across- manually operated if necessary!
It will be interesting to see it in use next year and how bad it gets but it will not be an improvement for sure.
So another four years of grief-- I will be heading to the mid term for drop off and apologise to the guys for the walk!

Can't say I agree with that point. If the road had gone under the terminal it would have come out on the old approach road. Then what as that road only had a link to local roads that were not suitable for heavy traffic. Only now are there plans to put in a dual carriageway that will cross the old approach road.
Yes but if they had have kept the through road - the one way back down to the 505 would have been sorted earlier. You detail the multiple changes very well and, right from 1999, the drop/pick area did not work.

Paxboy....I have argued in the past that closing the old approach road was an extremely short-sighted move. At the very least it would have given the airport more options than the current "fait accompli"!
I appreciate that, when the terminal was planned, the current level of mppa could not really have been expected - but if they had retained the through road - they would have had options.

Such as: the entrance road splits to send cars for drop and pick into an underground area - under what is now the drop/pick - and then flow on out and back to the 505. Access would then have been directly into the terminal by escalator and lift, an all weather solution. Keep traffic wardens on hand with a big stick!

Coaches could have branched up to park alongside the terminal as they do now.

BUT they threw all the options away and, once they built the new multi-story, they sealed the fate of an underground drop/pick.

NOW we have to wait for the train. As I have said above, classic Short Term commercial thinking, of the kind that we see in the UK every day.

Think it is safe to say it will remain as it is now.

Probably a consequence of the short remaining lease of the concession. Why spend extra money on a long term solution when some other company might get the benefit for free. I have no doubt this was the thinking why the new taxiway extensions don't go to the end of the runway as they are not needed now.

With views over the eastern apron The Smithfield Pub and Kitchen opened today. Another Starbucks is under construction in the only remaining unoccupied centre islands in the departure lounge and a Ted Baker fashion shop is due to open in December. I believe Ted Baker will be located in part of the new build departure lounge.

Passengers/Users View of Luton...

If you want to listen to an hour of slagging off of the airport, listen to the first hour of this phone in, with passengers and users giving their views!

BBC Three Counties Radio - The JVS Show, Luton Airport, smoking, Doctor Who plus the consumer hour

Main Points:
- Queues to the airport are still as bad, despite the airport promising they would improve.
- The airport telling people to use the free service at the mid-stay car park to drop off passengers and no bus coming to pick up passengers up for 40 minutes.
- No new seating areas air-side, despite the airport growing.
- Dingy stairwells passengers are forced to stand in for 20 minutes, before being allowed on the aircraft.
- Taxi drivers complaining it takes more than 10 minutes to drop passengers off and get to the payment barrier, costing them more than Ł3.
- Queues for the toilets.

To be fair they tred to keep it balanced, but not many complimentary callers called in, one about the disabled services are very good and another had a positive experience picking up a passenger.

The phone-in followed an interview with the airport, about passengers complaining about the experience of using LTN, and this was on the breakfast show. Using the below link and fast forward to 1hr 19mins into the show, I don't really rate the interviewer, but he did try to hold the airport to account. But the airport now seems to hire greasy PR staff to do the interviews!

He tried to brag about the new catering facilities that opened this week, but the interviewer held him to task, about not everyone wanting to eat and just want somewhere to sit.

Thanks gilesdavies for the heads up. Most people including the ex director of Monarch all list many of the airports short comings that we have mentioned here.

The terminal is going to be an interesting place if there are delays and cancellations from tonight's diverts. Standing room only comes to mind and that is outside the terminal.

Its looking like the storms have now passed north of the airport...

Looking on Flight Radar 24, it seems the traffic is being stacked and most the flights scheduled to arrive between 10.30pm and 11pm are showing ETAs of around 11.10pm onwards.

Interesting holding pattern for Sun Express during the storm and got to give it to the pilot for being patient and not simply diverting.

Yep- that Sun Express must have been carrying more than diversion fuel plus 30 minutes though or had favourable winds or routings. Held for almost one hour.

Airport Way closed for 5 nights

Find this story hard to believe with the school summer holidays beginning Friday.

Road resurfacing will take place in Airport Way, Luton, over five nights from Monday, July 24 to Saturday, July 29.

The work will take place between 10pm and 5am and during these hours Airport Way will be closed and there will be diversions in operation to direct traffic around the works.

Marshals will also be on site, where possible, to assist residents and manage temporary traffic management arrangements.

Cllr Paul Castleman, portfolio holder for Highways at Luton Borough Council, said: “These works are a vital component in Luton’s investment in its roads and will help to alleviate potholes and stop them from forming. The works have been planned to minimise disruption, however there may be some inevitable delays.

“We ask drivers to take this into consideration when planning journeys, particularly passengers travelling to Luton Airport who are advised to allow extra time for their journey as the roadworks may cause some congestion.”

Anyone requiring further information should contact Angus Davison by phone on 01582 546965 or email [email protected]

Probably in conjunction with the new Ibis budget hotel which is due to open next month and had a lot of work done in the road as well.

Noticed they were getting on well with the terminal infill today.
One of the contractors said by the end of next week all the steelwork should be flush to the frontage.

The retail concessions tenders for the extended departures have to be in by the end of July and have expected move in dates of Feb 2018.

Also noted that the company being used to try and sort out the vehicular access to the CTA uses the VISSIM software which is the industry standard for complex traffic situations.
Bet this is the one that really puts it to the test.
