LUTON -8
Passenger stats at Edinburgh are a distraction - the 2 airports serve different cities with a very different passenger mix. Think about Luton in its own right, not in terms of trying to outdo the Jones house 3 doors down the road... ! :-)
There won't be any substantial increase in pax throughput until the development plan is completed (2016?). Capacity is very limited at present, restricting the ability of the operator to search out major new business.
There will probably be a year-on-year increase in 2014 with known developments (5th based Monarch, extra Wizz and new operators more than offsetting the loss of FlyBe).
Once new stands come into commission, and the growth in the UK economy becomes better established, growth will increase more markedly.

In numbers terms, we've yet to see the benefit of new carriers coming in like Carpatair & Tarom or the increased presence of airlines such as Monarch & Thomson this coming summer.
Only Flybe have been lost so there's every reason to hope that 2014 numbers will be even better, especially if more new carriers & routes can be attracted to Luton which seems pretty likely.

There is plenty of capacity at Luton but not between 6 and 8 in the morning. Also there are plenty of spare overnight stands even without the planned extra capacity.

I myself was disappointment by the figures but irrelevant of that Luton has an average of 136 passengers per flight (over a 12 month period) whilst Edinburgh has 94. Heathrow 154, Gatwick 145, Manchester 128, Glasgow 101. Unfortunately Stansted figures not yet out.
Luton has to be the most economical and thus the greener of airports or put another way is most efficient! And lets not forget has an excellent return in profits each subsequent year!

Turkish carrier Atlasjet may start flying to Luton from next summer by the looks of their website which seems to show departures to both Istanbul and Ercan (Northern Cyprus). For the moment flights are not bookable though.

Napier Park (old Vauxhall site)
"Luton Airport hosts flights to over 90 destinations over 3 continents including Europe, South Africa, India, China and Thailand."
I wonder who fed them that information Augur
There was a plan to put a large multistory car park on the site to serve the airport which seems to have been dropped.
I see planning permission has been granted for yet another hotel. Augur | HOTEL PLANNED FOR FORMER VAUXHALL MOTORS SITE
That will make 3 hotels that are now waiting to be built close to the airport and 4 that are open.

Nice find regarding the Atlasjet.
Infact if you go to Luton as the starter point to book your tickets you get Antalya, Istanbul Tumu, Istanbul Ataturk, Izmir & Lefkosa Ercan.

I would imagine they will only fly to one or two of these destinations and will operate connections to the others.
AtlasJet seems to be very much focused on the Turkish domestic market and the countries in that region. They will need to do some serious marketing to get the message out they are flying to London and offer to competitive fares. At present the market seems to be dominated by Turkish Airlines and Pegasus, who both offer very competitive fares.
I would be interested to know why easyJet has pulled out of the Istanbul market, as would have thought they could hold their own. They have withdrawn totally from Istanbul and not just their route from Luton.

This is the (old) news release about the Stansted operation, I knew they operated into there once, but not too sure if it was in 2012 or 13?

This could do well if it's competitively priced.
The Turkish lira is currently at a low against the £ making Turkey an attractive destination for Brits.
Pity it's not TK with its Asian connections, but better than nothing, and good to see IST back on the departure screens.

Atlasjet
Fantastic news that Atlasjet are coming to Luton. I remember them flying from Stansted a couple of years ago but presume they couldn't compete successfully with Pegasus?
Hopefully they'll do much better from Luton. As part of Turkish Airlines will connections be available I wonder? Given how Istanbul is growing as a hub, it would be fantastic if this were possible.
It seems a no brainier to start these flights, I was surprised that easyJet cancelled their flights as the Turkish market & Istanbul in particular is clearly growing very fast.
Hopefully this is the start of many new airlines & routes to be announced in the coming year. Any other rumours?
