Is there a specific reason they're going their instead of the international pier? Been a good while since we've seen a wide-body on those stands.
Don't forget the EK , AI and possibly the PIA (if delayed) will also be in at the same time . It doesn't mean the check in will be in the former T2 (it's all one terminal now) . I will think for certain arriving pax will be bussed round to the main terminal to clear customs and baggage reclaim .

Correct me if I’m wrong but I thought the whole point of the international pier was that it was designed to handle x7 widebodies at any one time? By sending Airblue over to the old T2 it suggests that they can’t even handle just x4 widebodies together? Not a good endorsement for an airport that claims it can take the pressure of the overcrowded south? I realise there will be other aircraft in during that period but surely there would be enough vacant stands to allow the A340 to park up on the new pier? And if they plan to bus all the pax back to the main terminal why not just park up on the 80's stands? Very confusing.

China Pattern,

You are correct the new pier can handle 7 widebodies , so strange its going on 8C ,but sure there is a reason.

Stand 8C can take up to a 747 and has done a number of times before.

The main thing is that its another new long haul airline for us ,so where it parks is not of great consequence so stop worrying

Is it possible they'd be charged more for using the new pier? It's Air Blue after all...

Air Blue at T2

It probably will work OK if everything runs to time, but if it's more than 30 mins late arriving, then the T2 arrivals hall could get interesting. Depending on the time of year, there are a number of FlyBe arrivals around 9 (eg AMS, CDG, DUS and STR), plus Ryanair. It can get decidedly full, even without 300 more very tired people coming off a long flight. The baggage belts also may be a bit small.

It will be even more of a problem if BHX do not staff up properly in T2. It has regularly taken me 35 mins or more to get out of the aiport recently because they are tardy meeting the plane, with too few Border agents. This is in stark contrast with DUS, which entirely matches up to stereotypes about teutonic efficiency.

Is it possible they'd be charged more for using the new pier?
You'd hope so. T2 is seriously run-down and the new laminate flooring hasn't really helped all that much.

Be surprised if it does go 8C can easily fit though.
I thought 41C was planned? All different stands have there
Positives and negatives with this situation.

I hear Air Blue will use either 41, 56 or 57 center stands and they have A343 stop marks on. 8C could be used if the international pier is already full. Using a center stand means taking up 2 narrow body stands at the same time eg 41L and 41R.
Also check in will be in T2. T2 or Eurohub as it was known coped fine when the BA 763s to JFK operated through there back in the day bins and all.
Parking remote is the last resort (85c or 86c) as you'll have to bus both inbound and outbound pax.

Air Blue & Flybe

Air Blue

In around schedule and off a bit late but the latter no doubt due load - left around 00.05 departure and after 15 minutes it was at 23500 feet and after 24 minutes at 32000 ft leaving the east coast.

The Air Blue was on approach when the PIA Boeing 772 was just airborne with the Air India 788 and Emirates B77W still on the ground.

I am sure immigration earned their corn today - Emirates made over 850 pax inbound on their flights today as well. If that conitues it might give them a problem with the Dubai runway work next year.

flybe

Another change - the 175 is staying on the Inverness after all but operating from the Inverness base. As LGW-INV goes back to two daily in winter BHX gets it at 16.05 in and out 16.30, Monday to Friday with Sunday still a BHX based Q400.

It reverts to a BHX based 175 in summer 14 no doubt due to the Gatwick service ending.

Air Blue

Anyone have any idea what the in and outbound loads were for PA226/7.
I saw a lot of pax going airside on Saturday night, including a few stragglers with Air Blue labels on their bags.Talking of bags Mr O'Leary would have rubbing his hands together if he saw some of the bags being carried on as hand luggage.
Some were massive, and some had 3 or 4 large holdals with them. What a difference between loco and full fare services.
All in all it was a very busy Saturday night.

Told the Air Blue was completely full on the way out of BHX. Also only 3 seats left between them on the two EK outbounds too ,incredible loads.Averaging in excess of 90% last 6 weeks.

Looks like they need a 3rd rotation on a 77W within the next 12 months.

Inbound Air Blue only 169 pax but 17 tons of freight!
Outbound full pax load but not sure on the freight.
Overall, a good load and impressive inbound freight for the first ever flight.
Good to see 4 large long haul aircraft almost at the same time on the pier.

One would imagine EK will be keeping a close eye on that early morning arrival during the runway works to see how the loads and connections hold up.

Air Blue.

Thanks for the replies guys.
When I got into work on Saturday both the arrivals area and the entrance to departures were heaving.I don't think I have ever seen the upstairs restaurant area so busy.Granted there were probably a lot of family waving their loved ones off but if this is what we can look forward to then it must be a win,win situation for everyone.Especially if you think that Saturdays have never been the busiest day of the week.Long may it continue

BMIR & Saturdays

bhx bod

A far cry from the early to mid 80's on a winter's night, I worked in the bar and the old terminal it was weddings or hours or boredom with a few diversions in mid winter. The new terminal it was EI273 outbound and then only a handful of inbounds. Absolutely unbelieveable to think four heavy departures after 8pm (PIA is retimed).

Toulouse

It seems it is about to bite the dust on 1-11/13 - a work colleague is booked on it on the 3rd and is waiting to hear officially but is now looking at LPL-CCF with a price for three just over the cost of one ticket on BMIR.

One aircraft operating two flights a day (in fact Billund is 4 a week most of the winter) with one also carrying light loads

Re the previous Six posts

OK can someone please tell me why the runway is being extended - An A340 300 series with a full house + ? freight to ISB -

An eye opener was a recent posting on the Luton thread stating that It would be possible to carry an economic (passengers + ? freight) load to the US West cost off a 7000 ft 2160 Metre runway using the new B787.

OK: Other factors apply, but are the 787 & the A350 (perhaps) - At this late stage giving the airfield extra legs so to speak. Is the extra 405 Metres (two hours + approx, extra flying time in the cruse for an existing type) really that essential -

It would not be the first time that physical improvements although well intended have been outstripped by technology.

A rhetorical question - I know but I was talking to a person today who remembered the Bristol Bramazon.

There are a lot of Airfields in the UK with main runways in the 7000-8500 ft bracket (yes I know enough from reading PPRuNe) to realise its not quite that simple - Leeds for example, but think of Newcastle, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Cardiff or Tees-side - All potential mini long long haul points leaving out the existing airports with longer runways.

Are we seeing a crewel twist of fate - Just as the facility is enhanced, A jump in technology erodes the advantage to an extent.

Who did you work for in those days? I worked for forte in the 90's and indeed pulled a few pints! People mentioning Saturdays not being busy I remember summer Saturday nights being madness due to the level of charter flights, all different now I'd imagine!

I don't think there was any freight outbound to Pakistan and it's only roughly an 8hr flight. So factor in lots of freight, full tanks for 12hrs+ flying, warm/hot temperatures and calm or cross winds then a significant extra length of Tarmac is required. Same for most large wide bodies. But yes, I agree that technology is certainly helping to reduce runway lengths with the 787 and A350 I expect but not all airlines have them. I'm not sure what the performance is though on a fully laden 787 whether the extension will help or not? Best to have too much length than not enough.

Yep sorry it was the Bristol Brabazon - A transatlantic capable monster of an aeroplane powered by eight coupled 8 × Bristol Centaurus radial engines carrying about 100 people in cruse liner luxury.

Edit:Literally the inverse case of what I was describing ?

In my mind I had it as a pusher a bit like the Sara Cloud Princess just to compound the offence !

Splash&Dash I was being a bit over simplistic - I have learned from PPRuNe in qualitative terms about some of the actuality of flight planning as per your example - thanks

I know its not as simple as we need 8 Hours fuel, so lets take ten and a bit and hope there's a headwind component down the runway when we are ready to go ! - up to 50 feet over the end, 100 feet over the hedge and we are on our way.

By the way the last bit reminds me of a departure I saw from the old tower one Sunday, by a 727 in the old Elmdon tower during a pre ATCO selection visit.

(Edit:More seriously speaking: an example of a late rotation occasioned by a combination of circumstances that be of necessity difficult to predict)

The controller next to me said "They are not all like that one !" and various other exclamations suggested that the opinion expressed was not a unique one.

I will never forget that visit a Bank Holiday week end - A Portuguese 707 landed long on a very wet 15 - Great reflexes by the crew , even better breaks and a 1-11 500 burst a tyre or two on landing - The person handling the visit said "Its not always like this ?"

The tower controllers son was maintaining the "Movements Book"

Happy Days

How many times do we have to go over the runway length issue.

Flights of around 7 hours are no problem off our runway the A380 did it to DXB. Flight time to Islammabad is a tad under 7 hours.

The extension is built for the LONG TERM for flights to destinations that are OVER 7 HOURS,China, Hong Kong, Thailand, further parts of India, US West Coast, etc.The extra fuel required means these cannot be reached off the current runway.

Yes we can argue all day as to whether these are likely but that is the reason it was built.

Yet people rubbished that BHX would not get Air Blue or Air India back so medium/long term cannot rule them out entirely.
