BIRMINGHAM - 6
So it was the airport management and its' advisers then? I did realise that the local atc had nothing to do with it, but Nats is more than just a provider of personnel these days.

I am reliably informed that airfield works are planned very soon to restore the ILS on runway 33 back to Cat III status as soon as possible.
Flight calibration of the ILS is expected to take place July/August, so providing the work is a success the ILS should be back up to Cat III status by September, as I believe the ILS has to radiate for 200 hours before its serviceable for aircraft.
Lets just hope that the airfield works do finally sort this issue out.

BHX Record May !
In total 1,005,861 people travelled through the airport in May, up by 11.1% compared to the same month last year. This means the airport has celebrated fifteen consecutive months of record breaking growth.
Long-haul routes continued to experience the greatest rise in demand with 16.5% passenger growth compared to the same month last year. Meanwhile, short-haul routes saw a 10.5% growth rate year-on-year.
Paul Kehoe, Chief Executive Officer at Birmingham Airport, said: “To be hitting the one million passenger mark in May is fantastic news for the airport. It shows us that the new airlines and routes we have recently introduced are proving popular with our passengers.
“We are now entering the busy summer season and so we hope that these consecutive record breaking figures will continue going forward.”
Scheduled traffic accounted for 89% of the total passenger volume for May with charter traffic making up the remaining 11%.
Scheduled traffic saw an increase of 21.6%, with significant year-on-year passenger growth to Heraklion (+122.3%), Reykjavik (+116.4%) and Dubrovnik (+92.1%).
Charter destinations with significant growth were Fuerteventura (+95.2%), Gran Canaria (+89.4%) and Lanzarote (+78.4%).

How come Madrid isn't tops for significant growth? next to nothing last may and now we have 3 carriers on the route. Radio silence as far as the CAA stats are concerned for the route but surely Brum must know how many punters went there .

BHX-MAD May 2015 3466 Pax. So not all that unlikely to not appear in the list now. Also think Monarch are yet to commence on that route (?!).
Elegant solution in the press release to not talk about charter, which based on the numbers given in the press release must have fallen by some 35%. Not a massive surprise given the very successful expansion of scheduled flights.

Charter/Madrid
getonittt
Madrid has been a thorny subject re the CAA stats as they were often missing. I questioned the CAA about the Norwegian/Madrid figures, the lateness of the provisional stats and their disappointing revamped website and of course the reply was the usual platitudes, although they totally decided to ignore the Norwegian/Madrid question. At least it seems they now do show up and based on 3466 in May 2015 I would say around 300% up in May 16.

In respect of the Charter pax there are one of two reasons for the figures quoted:
1) They need new batteries for their calculator or
2) once again all Thomas Cook have been included as schedule. When I used to post the monthly stats I never could work out the Canaries flights as they seemed to favour more towards schedule and the penny finally dropped and I worked out the Thomas Cook figures were included as schedule.
May 2015 Charter passengers were 170212 but 11% of 1005861 is 110645. However with an extra based Thomson I would expect the true figure to be up and with Thomas Cook possibly carrying around 75000 pax in MayI would say charter increased rather than decreased.

Thanks for the replies re Madrid, hopefully they will be published by the CAA...one day. Whilst on the subject of Norwegian I notice that they have sub-chartered out some of their weekly flights to NEOS & DAT so I would wonder if these flights still offer free wifi which is Norwegians big selling point over the competition .

Air Transat recently started showing Montreal as a destination in the drop down list from BHX albeit only as a connection via Toronto.
Maybe just maybe they are testing the waters for a potential future service??

Flew with Norwegian BHX-AGP yesterday evening....but it was op by Air Explore, I think this was discussed a short time ago. Obviously no wi-fi, but aircraft (738), was clean, in excellent condition, crew were good, 4 flight deck announcements. So don't worry if you get changed, it was a pleasant flight, despite a small delay, not their fault.

Blue Air
Great news a new destination and increase on existing route (larger aircraft) and they have only been at BHX for a few months! I wonder if Wizz will launch new routes or expand existing ones? Wizz and Blue Air have had some great loads consistently across their routes out of Birmingham.

In relation to Air Transat and Montreal, that route would be a big surprise, its not even covered from Manchester.
You would expect Vancouver and Calgary. Transat seem happy to plod along with a piddly weekly seasonal YYZ from BHX as they have done for over 10 years now. zzz
The introduction to the UK of West Jet and expansion of Air Canada Rouge will have caused shockwaves in their previous comfy control of this market.
At present they seem to be showing the same schedule from BHX next year as for the last 10.
Any increases ,extra rotations to BHX would be very welcome from them. If they don't do it soon then West Jet of Rouge might.
