One assumes there must be a jet in the mix, as FAO would be a stretch on the Dash.

Twice daily to EDI when previously they pulled off this route?

One suspects some "support" from the Welsh Assembly to get routes going.

flybe at CWL

A sample Monday in mid-September using the above timings does suggest 2x based aircraft.

A/C 1 operates
Cardiff - Edinburgh
Edinburgh - Cardiff
Cardiff - Dusseldorf
Dusseldorf -Cardiff
Cardiff - Munich
Munich - Cardiff
Cardiff - Edinburgh
Edinburgh -Cardiff

A/C 2 operates
Cardiff - Dublin
Dublin - Cardiff
Cardiff - Glasgow Intl.
Glasgow Intl. - Cardiff
Cardiff - Paris CDG
Paris CDG - Cardiff
Cardiff - Dublin
Dublin - Cardiff

A/C one does seem to be a jet (according to the flight times and turnaround times).

A/C two is more difficult to tell but more than likely a jet (again looking at the flight times) and also as it would be strange to think they would open a new base with two different aircraft types?!

Just a couple of questions - what happens now to city jet and aer lingus regional?

Otherwise I think flybe is the perfect fit for cardiff. Of it comes true tomorrow very well done indeed

Flybe

Interesting development.

Flybe almost pull out as Cardiff does not work then hey presto they are back.

The initial Flybe strategy of rationalization seems to have been completely reversed.

The question is how much is the tax payer of Wales paying for this and what happens when the money stops.

Subsidised or not if Glasgow and Edinburgh were not really viable before why are the now and as for the other routes, well I wonder.

While it would ordinarily seem most unlikely to see Ryanair back on DUB CWL, it may seem so irresistable given the level of activity by the others.

One would also assume that BE will not have interline to EI US services. EIR should be well able to hold there own here.

PSO routes

You could say the same about the vast majority of Ryanair routes that have cropped up in the UK and the rest of Europe. Plenty of subsidies from regional governments and airports....

Great news and interesting selection of routes....let's hope it does not cause the loss of City Jet at CWL especially as they stepped into cover the initial loss of Flybe 2 years ago, and now Flybe are back competing with EDIT and Paris...be it 2 seperate Paris Airports.

Interesting also to see they are competing against BMI Regional from BRS to CDG, MUC, DUS and MXP......but at least Flybe are more known than BMI Regional across the area.

As said earlier I imagine the aircraft would be X1 Dash 8 and possibly either E175 or E195 as FAO be a long distance in a prop.

Fantastic news though.....well done !!

Well done

Well done to who, Cardiff Airport for attracting the routes on free market rules or the Welsh Assembly for spending money on air transport that will only benefit a few and subsidise an airline.

It does seem very strange that Flybe are taking on routes damn near identical to Aer Lingus Regional and CityJet. Both of these carriers out of CWL are Stobart Air operations, which given their exisiting tie-up with Flybe at SEN makes me think these new routes will replace CityJet and EIR at CWL. Flybe flights maintaint interlining to the US via EI from SEN, so I fear we are seeing the end of WX/EI at CWL.

While I'm no expert and do not necessarily believe in public money being spent on aviation, is the government being quite clever though? How long in reality will it take to recoup the £3.5m spent on route development? How much will the extra route and footfall add to the value of the airport should it be sold back to the private sector? Surely it can only add value providing the services are well used?

Forgetting the money aspect it's great news for CWL and BE. Hopefully people will use these services and that they will last the test of time.

Is this actually subsidised by the Welsh Assembly? Would a FOI request uncover the details of any subsidies if requested?

Here is the announcement from the CWL website:

Flybe confirms new 11 route network and base at Cardiff Airport

It does refer to making use of "surplus" E195's and I've read elsewhere that it's a 10 year deal between the airline and CWL.

The CityJet flights are in the system for ages after the Flybe flights start, so it looks like this is going to be war. Flybe CWL-EDI flights are at damn near identical times as the CityJet ones; I do not see this ending well for CityJet...

The CWL GLA route will never work on that schedule.

I do wonder how much funding has to underpin the 10-year agreement to make this happen - I suspect it must be a very large amount. Brings a whole new meaning to the "pay to fly" debate often raging in other parts of PPrune.

I obviously don't know about the ins and outs of this arrangement but if these routes are being subsidised or underwritten by public money should there not have been some sort of tender process? I don't see the lads at BMI taking this lying down given the competition to their BRS operations.

There is no subsidy, the Welsh Government has lent money to Cardiff Airport on commercial terms and it has to be repaid. The airport has entered into a commercial agreement with flybe.
