My question is, where do they suddenly appear from
Overheard a couple with a young child sat across the aisle ask a cabin crew member on boarding for a lap restraint for their young child stating that they had paid for a seat for the child but would rather the child sat on the fathers lap for take-off.
Three headcounts were taken which obviously did not match the manifest. The cabin crew were obviously under pressure to get it sorted and I overheard one cabin crew member saying to another 'We have 188+5 but should have 189+4'. I drew the attention of one of the cabin crew members to the couple with the child on the fathers lap and got a 'nothing to do with you' look in response.
A good 10 mins later the senior crew member approached the couple across the aisle and problem solved.

Lady l2013.
It's internet check in. It's causing issues on lots of flights, although it's normally sorted in seconds by the Dispatcher. Basically, pax are checking in on the Internet and then again at the airport, anything from 2 to 4 pax too many, always no bags to come off.

Yes understood about no-shows and people not checking in at all but not a system that allows you to check a person in twice unless ground supervisor or equivalent 'forces' them in the flight after several checks.
The worry if it becomes common and complacency kicks in that one day a flight departs without somebody on board who should be and carrying the content of their luggage.
If as suggested by an earlier poster the system allows check in twice, I suggest a fix must be found esp as they seem to suggest its happened numerous times lately ?

It continues to amaze me that on a nearly full aircraft they have to count all the pax, surely 189 seats with 7 empty equates to 182...much simpler/easy counting the unoccupied and subtracting from total seats. Suppose that is far too simple for the average CC.

But the Captain announced that 141 came through the gate, but only 140 were on board. He asked everyone to remain seated and no one got on. He later said the passenger had been found so I presume they were physically on board. Could it have been a problem with scanning the passes at the gate?

boarding discreprency, can happen for various reasons, until the discreprency is resolved, you can't go, some are much easier than others. Also very dependent on how good the dispatcher is.
