If the journey is on a single ticket/single fare, then APD will apply as normal. Buying two tickets at seperate fares will avoid longhaul APD but will be more expensive and will not guarantee connections
I sit corrected. Having almost never connected from the UK to longhaul via a european hub, I was incorrectly assuming that if you flew, for example, MSE-AMS-HKG that you would only pay APD on the MSE-AMS bit.

Anyway, wish MSE luck with getting this off the ground.

When I last resided in UK my local airport, some mere 2 to 3 miles down the road, was CWL where KLM have the monopoly on international business travel in their AMS/CWL/AMS service.

Despite being a Londoner by birth I will avoid travelling thru LHR with a vengeance, I hate travelling thru the place, and over recent years I have used BHX extensively and, since relocating back to S. Wales, CWL once or twice.

In 2010 I travelled to/from Philippines, KLM had a reasonable fare from/to CWL, more expensive than fares with other carriers from LHR/LGW but not so much more expensive taking in to consideration the buggeration factor of National Express etc, thus I travelled from/to my doorstep airport of CWL.

Yet last year, when travelling to Philippines, KLM fares were so damn expensive I couldn't justify the expenditure and for some £200 cheaper CX got my business out of, my hated, LHR and I got to fly 4 engines long haul and with a mere 1hr connection thru HKG.

The point I am making is that just because KLM may, and I say "may", come and frequent MSE don't think for one minute that most of Kent, East Sussex, wherever are going to come rushing to travel the world from a KLM monopolised MSE, like me they're going to be shopping around for price and schedule and many of them will continue trotting across to LHR, LGW etc. and it is likely, as with KLM's LPL service, that any KLM MSE service will fail.

Isn't this minor advantage about to disappear with the MTOW threshold for inclusion being lowered next year?

KLM

KLM used to use a Saab 340 (30 seater) out of SOU into AMS 3 times daily. Early morning out to connect with long haul. Very successful

Doesn't bode well.
However it was the aircraft size I thought was important as this would only require 90 each way for 3 rotations and not the 240 being suggested.

But KLM/CityHopper no longer operate turbo-props of any description ... and those Saab's, all those years ago, came from KLM's takeover of Netherlines.

Daily flights from Manston Airport to Amsterdam seem 'done deal' | This is Kent

Good news for MSE, also for KL and the AMS hub.

It's now up to the residents of East Kent to use the service.....

KL1519 AMS-MSE 1010-1005
KL1520 MSE-AMS 1040-1235

The 0635 departure will contravene the council's night flying policy - will be interesting to see how that is resolved. And the schedule will put severe pressure on staffing resources at the airport, especially ATC/fire/ops - expect to see periods in the middle of the day when they don't provide radar and reduce the fire cover significantly.
