EI staff

Just 80 at Cork servicing 4 based aircraft operating 15 daily return flights, how many at Shannon servicing just 2 International arrivals and departures each day?

I think that number includes cleaning staff and catering staff. Also cabin crew i think even though they are not ground handling.

I believe it is actually 1300 staff throughout the airline. This could encompass office staff also!

That number wouldn't include Cabin Crew as there are approx 1300 crew across all bases.

thats been the plan I think a while.....like 911 they'll use the currrent economic crisis/downturn to cleaver the place. I just hope hey look at themselves in the head office block, offices upon offices. This is where a paintball gun needs to be used at full force. Further why dont they sublet that monstrosity of their head office block for maybe a hotel(FR could do with the space) and move lock stock and barrel out to a near by industrial park. Theres no need for office staff to be in situ in such a high bid rent airport area.

Front line staff work damn hard. Theres also rumour of salary cuts but with a healthy balance sheet, if they pull that stunt they wont have an airline.....maybe thats the plan?

eick320->I heard that suggestion as well. I think it might make sense for operations in Dublin, but for Cork and Shannon outsourcing the lot probably makes more sense.

Cork has considerable quiet periods during the day when staff are effectivel employed to do very little. If Aer Lingus aren't going to handle other airlines subcontracting makes more sense.

Shannon has very few flights altogether and is well below critical mass for self-handling.

Crew will be outsourced with 3 bases set up in the US, however, a redundancy package will be offered to crew, which sounds suspicuous to me, as the threat of loosing t/a flying, would scare a lot of more senior, and more expensive crew to leave

AerLingus in badtimes

just in the news tonight that they are trying to out source 1500 ground crew jobs and also recruit long haul staff fron the US.
Bases at SHN and LHR are also under threat

The minister for transport has stated that they may soon be fighting for survival

Long overdue, if not given the current trading conditions. There will only be one Irish airline soon if this particular bullet isn't bitten. They are still very overstaffed and a lot of them seem to think they are owed a job and this is still the good old days of state ownship.

But times have changed. Even the Irish civil service, that cosiest of cosy jobs for lif is in for a major hatchet job.

The Shannon station was dead years ago. They just kept dressing up the dried out corpse the way Norman Bates kept his Mother even though she was long dead and the motel bypassed by the new highway.

This recession is a golden opportunity to slice away the fat and useless.

I reckon they know they won't get away with outsourcing all those jobs, but by announcing 1500 jobs to be outsourced, they can start negotiating with the unions and maybe get away with out sourcing about half that. If they'd only announced say 700 jobs to be outsourced, the unions would probably negotiate that number down. I'd say they'll keep self handling at Dublin. Cork's problem is that there are three waves of flights, the morning rush, the midday rush, and the evening rush, handling staff are paid to hang around not doing much. I think Willie Walsh was very short sighted to halt Aer Lingus's handling of other airlines. If they did so at Cork it would probably fill up the quiet times somewhat. Self handling at Shannon is completely ludicrous given the number of flights operated. From January for example there'll only be 14 flights per week from Shannon. Cork will have more Aer Lingus flights in one day than Shannon will have in an entire week, yet there are significantly more people employed by Aer Lingus at Shannon than at Cork. The closure of the LHR base is a bit surprising.

Harsh

But has an element of truth.

Things have to change at EI if they are going to have a chance in the current climate.

Lets hope things dont get too messy.

The LHR base is tiny and was the subject of an attempt to close it a few years ago. As for scaring more senior crew to take the package due to less transatlantic flying... there are fewer alternative jobs out there. Most of the crew flying now AREN'T flying 20+ years. A decision to take any redundancy package is based on personal financial situations, not whether there is lots of longhaul flying available.

I agree that self handling can lead to a more customer focused front line and could give Aer Lingus the edge, esp when competing with Ryanair at Dublin.
But reports regarding Aer Lingus at BFS seem very complimentary, both on the ground and cabin crew, so if the airline can replicate this at say Cork and Shannon, and self handle in Dublin, could be the way to go for the short term anyway.
I think that costs need to be reduced and totally agree with the cuts, if money saving, while still providing the passenger with a service they'd realistically expect. I only hope that cuts are made if applicable at management level also, and not a case of cutting the ground staff and cabin crew, only to award themselves with big pay rises or bonuses at the top!!
