Delta have just dumped service from LGW-CVG, EDI-JFK and MAN-JFK. They are not doing this to begin service to CWL. Anyone who believes this, is nuts.

MAN-JFK
Returns in May after a winter break. I think Delta stop the route in January.

Will just have to wait and see what happens then.............

Anyone know who is tipped to take over the CWL-VLY route ? Will Highland keep the contract ? In fairness I think they should after doing a good service for the last 3 years.............lets hope they put this J41 (Y29) onto the route.

Have also heard that Aer Arann plus a few others are looking at it........maybe the ATR 42 will be too big - the J41 will be ideal, could even look at doing a mid day rotation to another destination like IOM or GCI ???

Who else is interested in this route ? Anyone ?

Who knows, eh? There maybe a surprise lurking! Also, yes, agreed the ATR42 would be far too big. My bet is with Loganair's Saab - 33 seats is just about right, and with their ABZ sandwiched between the twice daily VLY, and maybe even somewhere else, it would be perfect. Certainly wouldn't want Highland to continue - they're plagued with technical issues half the time and canx at such short notice!

Does anyone know when the tender process is due for finalization?

I suppose the same problems would affect Logan Air and their SF340's as with Highland and their J41's. How would Logan Air cope with a tech plane ? Getting a spare aircraft from ABZ, EDI or GLA is a bit of a journey. As for Highland they have spare aircraft quite close as with previous delays & cancellations. I know that this is a J31 and the J41 would operate the new tender etc but at least they can get a replacement here ASAP. Highland also have the "local" crew where Logan Air do not.......but you never know I suppose !

I think the announcement is not until Feb 2010 so bit of a wait.

With regards to the Six Nations this season - anyone know of what flights have been requested to date ? What airlines ?

One long wait then! Unless things get 'leaked' before hand. Hmmmm....

As far as I'm aware, the only additional services are EI to DUB, WW to DUB and larger aircraft/more frequent operating to EDI. Besides these, I'm unaware of anything else...but if I do, I'll be sure to reveal!

Also note that CWL is now tweeting! Find it under @cardiffairport!

To be perfectly honest i believe any airline that applies for the CWL-VLY contract would have the same issue as none of them have a base at CWL other than that particular aircraft.

Allthough Hwy have seemed to have done ok there has been a lot of issues and lot of aircraft coming from up north etc.

Hwy only have 2 x J41 and one of which is currently being used as spares according to Jethro. The other downfall is that HWY has no intention of operating a flight or two between the two roatations or on the weekend.

You then have the likes of Loganair or Aer Arann. that have several other options. More aircraft in the fleet to shuffle flights around for delays etc.

Time will only tell. I really like the Hwy crews just preference on other options purely down to possible extra flights for CWL fingers crossed

Airlines such as Logan Air & Aer Arann may have the "spare" aircraft but these are located in either Ireland or Scotland which does not really help if an aircraft goes "tech".

In my opinion it should be left with Highland, after all they have tried & tested the route for the last 3 years plus the J41 will be more popular for the customers than the J31.

I can't see what your trying to get at, where do you think the highland airways aircraft come from for tech delays? Sumburgh Inverness etc all in the highlands plus longer flying time to reach CWL. Only occasionaly it is from the likes of Filton has the spare aircraft come from.

With only 2 J41 in the fleet it's an even greater risk than previously.

The airport and government needs to be encouraging for more flights to be operated out of our national airport. Highland Airways are not interested in doing scheduled flights unless their getting handouts from the government. So i would imagine status quo from highland and have the aircraft on the deck most of the day and on weekends.

Other airlines may look for operating one or two routes in between and on weekends to make as much money as they possibly can out of the aircraft.

I can't really see much use in an aircraft being on the ground for over 50% of the time.

I like highland airways and like the crews but unfortunatly i also want the airport to have a better route network and i think it maybe better for Wales if another airline operated the route.

Some say that we (taxpayer) shouldn't still be paying for the route but thats another argument.

Suppose so, agree with the point about lack of interest on other routes - a nice hop to GCI, IOM or even LBA would be great as it is such a waste to see an aircraft parked up for most of the day & all of the weekend.

Another good contender would be Air Southwest - be great to see them back at CWL

What is happening with Canada this year - any new operator been found yet ? The loads were always great back in the days of Zoom & even Air Transat, shame no new airline has been found to take over this route.............

Within Europe, where would be a great destination to serve ? Any thoughts ? Obviously Poland, but would be good to see VCE, CIA, DUS, NCE, BOD on the board at some stage !!

Not heard anything on the Canada front but Flyglobespan has yet to release their Canada flying programme, otherwise i can't really see where we can get it at the moment.

Poland would be nice but has become more expensive. As of other european routes not sure it depends on who would be interested.

Prague would be a nice return and should be very popular, venice, and maybe the likes of croatia could become more popular.

Ryanair will go from 4 to 5 based aircraft at BRS at the beginning of April 2010 with 5 new routes.

The argument continues here ... with an academic and an airline boss (with eyes on CWL) deeply divided!

The above link goes onto the end of the discussion. Here's the start, I think:

North - South ... which aircraft? - Wales Air Network

or perhaps it isn't? Though it's interesting. Can you provide a better link Peter P?

Please, How do you know this? Hopefully you are not working this out from the online seat map for the flight, as at this time before the flight it gives very little indication of how many people will actually be flying the route...
Most people check-in online around 48hours before and so more seats will be allocated. Not only this but alot of babys domestic customers do book last minute, so this also helps load factor and obviously the higher fares closer to departure help on bringing the yield closer together.

If this is what you are going by then you could easily say the same about flybe. Just 17 seats pre-booked so far and online check-in doesn't open till 36 hours before departure i dont think...
