Surely an afternoon service to add frequency would be better than a larger A/C? If its really that busy?

Missed the point, PT - every single seat this service generates costs the taxpayer money. Fly it LESS, not MORE, until it can get at least a little commercial...

Bmibaby @ CWL

Forgive me if this is going over old ground, but have been chatting to a friend who lives in Alicante......

Her choice of flights is now limited with baby coming too and fro and she is having to use BRS.

I just checked on the baby website and they offer just 24 departures to all destinations per week in November ex CWL and only 2 to Alicante..

If you stripped out the CWL-EDI flights that total drops to a staggeringly low figure of just 11....

Bit different from last year is it not?....or am I missing something!!?

Winter 09/10 is going to be a very quiet one for WW out of CWL. Most week days there will only be 2 x EDI and 1 x BFS = 3 rotations. There maybe an international on one week day but can't remember off the top of my head when i looked online.

Weekends there are 5 or 6 flights.

There could possibly be many reasons for this such as:-
  1. Not enough advanced bookings as previous years and therefore withdrawing certain days of operation from service including dropping routes such as the GNB.
  2. Aircraft to be used during week days at other bases due to one or two aircraft going back to the leasing company.
  3. Route not profitable during winter seasons.
  4. Mixture of all
There is also the uncertainty that is at WW in regards to what Lufthansa is planning to do with the company. Could also be having a knock on effect with bookings.

If anyone cares to correct me then please do so.

Was speaking to cabin crew this morning, and she stated to me that Bmi are making an important announcment sometime tomorrow.
Can anyone shed any light on this, as to what to expect???

CWL is going to 2 aircraft for winter but that's all anyone knows for sure. What that means for CWL based crews is anyones guess until whenever the announcement is made. BUt CWL engineer have been told they have 2 aircraft ufn. The real issue is what the plan is for next summer and whether new aircraft are replacing the handbacks, the leases are being renegotiated or the aircraft are leaving the company without repacement. The last one would mean the end of Baby by this time next year in most people's opinion.

Now Bmi Baby have reduced flights, and if they did close the CWL base, (which I hope they don't), then surely this would be a good time for BE to come in and base aircraft in here, or maybe another low cost carrier, like Jet 2!!!!!!!

Bmibaby CWL

Tbi....

I don't think for one second that baby are going to pull CWL. Pete Durnford likes the base, it has relatively good load factors on the current routes with 2 x 733, and hopefully things will improve again for S10.

If further rationalisation is needed then my money would go on BHX closing as a base with W rotations being flown out of EMA to cover the customer base in Birmingham. EMA is after all only 38 miles from BHX so getting crews to and fro is not going to be a show stopper, and folk will get used to it.

I have said it before but baby is a brand that does have a presence and I am sure will be around for a while yet!!

Ant.

Have heard from colleagues at BMI baby that it could be bad news for CWL..........also on the radio BHX, EMA, MAN & CWL at risk of redundancies with 158 jobs having to go to save ££££££££££. Shame if this comes true, they started well at CWL with some good routes like TLS, MUC, BGY, WAW, GDN but have now just focussed on the Med routes. If it is true good luck to them all, such a shame !

Think Cwl mis-management is expecting the worst,
why else re-release a 2 yr old press statement on a 'stalled' project (FFB)?

Good luck to everyone still lucky enough to work near home,

Yours (from a suitcase somewhere)

Ivor - the airport didn't. It was a Vale councillor who saw the news story from a long time back and didn't check. SR71 spotted this some posts ago on a similar thread....

ah, but the plot thickens..'the Vale councillor' is a near neighbour,(and knows I'm working 'away'.)..
says it came in an e-mail from 'tumbleweed international'....
unless of course we're talking about a different councillor..

But you're right they should check their sources first

Cant really blame the Airport big wigs.........BMI baby started off with exciting news routes ex CWL and as said earlier they have dropped them all to just focus on the Med routes & the remaining domestic routes.

What happens next if CWL closes and they just concentrate on EMA, BHX & MAN ?

Who or what will stand in and thake their place at CWL ? Surely the place could not survive with the charters and limited other schedules ??????

I think CWL could survive with the charters and few other scheduled services. To be totally blunt it is now, as over half of the BMIbaby routes are just bucket and spade holiday (or stag/hen night) routes. Of the other routes a few are more or less duplicated by flybe (lets hope they expand as they seem to have avoided the bucket and spade destitinations).

I've lost track of the number of times I've travelled from CWL on a work trip and felt totally overdressed (and I'm not a suit and tie man, more smart casual) compared to the holiday crowd with their pink tracksuits and prison white trainers. The same is true for BRS but at least there you see quite a few people in suits and ties and a lot of them with Welsh accents
