Cardiff Reaches 2.1 million passengesr in 2007

<H1>14 January 2008

Travel trend sets new record for Cardiff International
Passenger traffic at Cardiff International Airport (CWL), which directly supports over 1,000 jobs in South Wales, grew by five per cent to a record 2.1 million in 2007.

The figures show a continuing trend for travellers to switch to UK regional airports from the main South East hubs. BAA's London airports grew by 1.3 per cent over the same year while, in comparison, both Scotland's and Wales' capitals recorded identical five per cent rises.

Domestic traffic from Cardiff soared by 17 per cent while international passenger numbers went up two per cent. Scheduled passenger traffic grew by six per cent and charter flyers added four per cent. Average airline load factors - the percentage of seats occupied on aircraft flying from Cardiff - also rose.

Most new passengers were attracted by services from bmibaby and Thomsonfly, the largest carriers at the capital city airport. However, the fastest growth rate by scheduled airline at Cardiff over the year was recorded by Aer Arann, which served Dublin, Cork, Galway and Nantes. Newest entrants to the Cardiff market in 2007 were Flybe, which launched flights to Paris and Belfast City, and Highland Airways, operating to Anglesey.

Peter Phillips, the airport's Head of Marketing and Communications, commented: "Business and leisure passengers alike are rejecting the hassle and uncertainties of a long drive to catch flights. We see this trend continuing well into the next decade and made provision for it with last year's Euro 10 million investment in airport facilities."
Among new services being launched in 2008 from Cardiff International Airport are Warsaw and Gdansk by bmibaby; an extended domestic network from Flybe, taking in Jersey, Newcastle, Glasgow and Edinburgh; and flights to Newquay by Skybus.
</H1>
Should be expecting further growth at CWL with the addition of Flybe and the new routes from BmiBaby.

Hola Airlines 733 ex CFE
Orion Air 143 ex PGF
Eastern Airways S20 ex LYS

All in on Friday.............

Good to see Aer Arann return with NTE this Summer too

Anyone heard the rumours that TOM will operate to POP for Winter 2008 to connect with their cruise ship on a regular basis ? If so the Caribbean is becoming very popular BGI,MBJ and now POP !!!

Lets hope TOM will add a few more ski routes ex CWL too, SZG,LYS, TLS or TRN

Would Ryan Air ever consider a return to good old Cardiff ?
With bases now at both BHX & BRS, a CWL base would confirm them as the leading airline in this area.

There has been enough Ryan Air diversions at CWL over the last three weeks due to BRS weather.

Anyone any ideas or comments on this ?

Well Ryanair is an extremely choppy airlines its hard to predict what theyll do next, i.e i wouldn have guessed Birm would have been next but somewhere in poland instead, they could consider a base at cardiff to possibly complement the BRS services but i doubt it, unless they could strike a deal with new management now JH has gone.

That would probably be a few years away, when BE could well have established a substantial route network from CWl, WW continue to serve the bucket and spades and other popular domestic and with all the regionals and charters with possibly more expansion would there be room for RYR to make a go of anything?

I also noticed that zoom went down to once weekly again when looking for flights for grandparents

CWL developments

I thought Zoom has only been operating 1 weekly to both Toronto and Vancouver each. Did they ever do 2 weekly to either point?

I have booked a trip with Thomson Cruises from Cardiff to Dom Rep next Winter, apparently it will be on a 767

It will be interesting to see what bmi baby do next. Do they have the ability to grow this year? If they don't do it soon, someone will jump onto the opportunity.

Flybe - JER

the news of Flybe operating 3 x weekly service to Jersey in the summer for a while, and been bookable since a week after the other announcement, it's just for some reason only now Cardiff Airport and flybe have decided to announce it officially.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Inbound Domestic Passengers

Apparently there has been a meeting with various officials including the authorities regarding allowing domestic passengers into the terminal via the gate area and opening another access down to the baggage reclaim area.

Does anybody know how this meeting went and what the decision was?

This would resolve the problem of only having 4 walk in stands (excluding stand 8) that can accept domestic routes. Considering BE is now on the scene i think this problem will need to be resolved sooner rather than later. How idiotic would it be if a delay was caused to an a/c as buses were not available for flights on 6, 15, 16 or 17 due to buses being used to transport pax from stands next to the terminal.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
New Terminal Developments

When are we expecting the next development to the terminal and what will it be?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
A380

With British Airways having an order of A380 a/c, what are the chances of it being maintained at CWL?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Cheers Guys for your answers in advance

well done cwl!

great news for the airport with the 2.1m passengers. This should encourage other airlines to use the airport by demonstrating that there is catchment area with demand for services. Its now up to the management of CWL to capitalise on this, drop the cost of landing charges and get in an airline from Europe and possibly Emirates and or AA/Delta.

Is BCN back this year?

No CWL-BCN this year with Thomsonfly unless BMI baby pick it up.

Have to agree, great news about the 2.1 million passengers and hopefully some "major" carrier will see the potential in CWL.

AA/DL/EK - be great if they did, but we have been down this road before unless the new MD of CWL prooves us all wrong !!!!

Some new Skybus advertising is around the airport promoting the NQY route due to start in March.

I have no hesitation in saying that Cardiff must be the only major airport in the Uk now without a easyjet or ryanair presence and a pretty weak one with bmibaby.

Its high time now that the management did something about this and expanded the network because the airport is desperately falling behind now when you have Man, Bhx realising the future is with the lowcos.

Mind you, with Jon Horne now gone the airport could strike a deal with Ryanair, considering Ryr were unhappy with Bhx a few years back, and they could definitely operate a Cardiff base alongside Brs, but with the current set-up thats a long way off.

Not at the moment, runway and taxiways are not strong enough or wide enough to support the A380.

A380 at CWL

consideriing the first A380 is not due until apr 2012 it is still quite a long way away, and is a possibility. I'm guessing the guys at BA have in their minds which base it will be maintained at.

Airport avoids new higher tax regulation

Jan 16 2008 by David James, South Wales Echo
CARDIFF International Airport will avoid having to charge higher airport taxes under new EU regulations, it has been confirmed.
Euro MPs excluded small terminals like the Rhoose airfield with under five million passengers a year from a directive on airport charging adopted in Strasbourg by the European Parliament yesterday.
As reported in the Echo earlier this week, the directive is aimed at preventing large airports from abusing their market position but is expected to lead to higher charges. As Bristol will be hit by the regulations, Cardiff could gain a competitive advantage.
Other airports affected by the ruling are Birmingham, Manchester, Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton, Stansted, Newcastle and Glasgow.

Devil

Tax cuts, development money or even registered charity status will not make CWL competitive to BRS! BRS are rapidly catching BHX up on pax numbers. Why would this news suddenly make Cardiff so competitive?
BRS is getting busier and busier and busier and busier and.....busier! Geographically CWL catchment is tiny compared to BRS and alot of that is to do with the bridge toll. BRS has alot of pax from the M4 corridor, South Wales, the South West, South and West. CWL is limited to South Wales and some South West/Midlands. I lived in Devon and my friends wouldn't even consider a package holiday from CWL. Instead they went for BRS. There is no real reason for that. Its all Psychological, but its also fatal to a business' expansion. CWL will grow with the aviation market (in the same way every other regional has) but if you expect a sudden explosion in pax numbers I think you need to look at trends.
