The work providing it is not delayed further should begin sometime during October 2010.

Hopefully it will be after the Ryder Cup as it woulnd not be good for passengers to enter a building site during this time.

Initially i had the view that it was pointless starting the work after the Ryder Cup, however having the work carried out during winter is much better than doing it during the summer.

Ryder Cup Traffic

Sadly, if the experience of BHX is anything to go by, the Ryder Cup will create very little in the way of addition air transport movements. A few exec jets plus possibly a chartered airliner to carry the US team ( in those days it was generally a Concorde that brought the team).

I wouldn't use the Cup as a reason to delay any terminal development.

Emirates Opens Up Route Network To Welsh Travellers - Cardiff Airport Website

Another example of the Cardiff Airport Media Centre trying to put a positive spin on a connection out of the airport.

First look at the title makes you think that Emirates were adding Cardiff onto their list of UK destinations, but wait, as you actually read through the article it goes on to promote flying out of other UK regional airports! Explain why anyone wishing to travel on Emirates would want to fly up to Newcastle or Glasgow when a short 2 hour drive gets you to Birmingham airport ready to get on an Emirates B777 on its way to Dubai.

Without the simple thought of only a 1 hour difference between the flight up north or a drive over the border to BHX, consider the cost of the flight and luggage for the domestic flight compared to driving and parking. Travelling as a single passenger you may consider the flight but as soon as you have someone to share a car with the 2 hour drive is definitely the most cost effective option!

Also the claim that these connections could help promote tourism in Wales is absolute BONKERS! Why would a passenger from Dubai (or further) want to get on another a/c after a 7 hour flight to fly into Cardiff without a specific reason (e.g. business)

Instead of the Cardiff Media team giving out free advertising to GLA, NCL, FlyBe and Eastern, why don't they focus on getting Emirates into Cardiff.

One flight a day to Dubai from Cardiff would attract alot of passengers that are usually lost to BHX and LHR. Cardiff with a bit of advertising could attract the required passenger numbers to fill an Emirates A330. The airline would attract the passengers from West and South Wales as well as the Bristol catchment area.

What do the Cardiff PPRuNe readers think?

Terminal Redevelopment

Thanks for the feedback. Lets hope it is started and finished in reasonable time, the terminal is beginning to look dated.

WelshAirDragon, you suggest that CWL might commit to supporting new routes through marketing, rather than rate discounts.

Thanks to his induction by Carlos del Rio, the Mexican CEO of Spanish-owned TBI/Abertis (both Mexico and Spain have not yet introduced competition into their airport systems), our blarney expert PD does not believe an airport should advertise its routes ... he sees that as the job of the airlines.

Patrick has the same view as the manager of a motorway service station: his measure of success is about increasing profit per passenger, not increasing passenger numbers. He will not spend anything more than pocket money to support new routes/airlines.

If you see any apparent route investment claimed by CWL, look a little closer to find the real source. It could well be you, the taxpayer. That's why CWL couldn't get Delta, as WAN pointed out some weeks ago. The funding decision lay with the Welsh Assembly Govt, not TBI/Abertis - who wouldn't do it despite their powerful financial status as one of Europe's biggest corporations. When Ieuan Wyn Jones said no to spending Euro-cash in a dubious fashion, the deal fell apart. Quite right.

Well, that's my humble opinion anyway.

One flight a day to Dubai from Cardiff would attract a lot of passengers that are usually lost to BHX and LHR
And therein lies the problem. Why would EK add a service to Cardiff with all the extra costs, when all that may achieve is beating up loads on their existing services? Classic load erosion.

When I'm not in Dubai, I'm in Cardiff, and I use BHX as an EK regular - would I use the Cardiff service, changing somewhere? No, for all the reasons you point out. Having a CWL direct would be great, but they won't get more of my money, I'll just stop using BHX.

I don't think you'll see a CWL link to Dubai for a long time - the catchment isn't big enough, it impinges a little too much on other catchments, and EK have way too much of the world not adequately covered. Look at South America, great chunks of Africa and loads of European capitals. Where is WAW, TXL, BUD, BRU etc? They've only just got around to AMS, MAD and PRG. CWL will be a long way off.

DXB Via NCL

You can now get to DXB via Newcastle, Eastern and EK now have an agreement.

You can indeed, or via Paris, or Glasgow. But why on earth would you, when there are two 777-300ERs leaving BHX (90 mins from Cardiff on a good day) each and every day?

This is not available with just Eastern Airways to Newcastle

In the initial press article on the Wales Air Network News Centre it stated that you could connect with Emirates on scheduled airlines from Cardiff via Newcastle, Glasgow, Paris and Amsterdam.

This would mean that you should be able to connect on:

Eastern Airways
Flybe
KLM

This service should be supported and used by Welsh travellers as it could be testing waters for a possible CWL-DXB in the near future.

Slightly off topic...

For anyone interested, after failing to find an economically viable means of flying a light aircraft from south Wales, I have finally got myself access to 2 strips in the Vale of Glamorgan. One is 320 metres and west of the Cardiff zone, the other is 720 metres and inside the zone on the western extended centreline.
At the moment it is cash rental by the day but I might decide to purchase.

Only took 5 years to get this far!

The triumph of hope over experience...

Getting to CWL this way is VERY expensive, and much, much longer than doing it direct to BHX or LHR. As for the KLM, anyone doing this would not use EK, since KL can do the trip end to end twice daily, and at a lower fare, and with better baggage allowances.

I would be amazed if this option is used much. What you are seeing is EK adding to their network as part of an ongoing initiative to connect to airports they won't be serving directly any time soon.

And see my post above. It makes just no sense for EK to start this route, since it is bound to cannibalise yield elsewhere.

Thats the question, a DXB route would not be viable, unless it was operated by a Low-Cost carrier, becuase of the EK BHX Flights.

Can't see a low cost doing it, seven hour sectors are not part of the low cost model....

Absolutely nothing wrong with the BHX service. Nice new EK Business Class lounge as well.

TwinAisle is 100% correct, as ever sound words, commercially a route like that would be a total no brainer.

I believe that you have considerable experience in running airlines at a senior level and have an intimate knowledge of the South Wales market.

That's why the views of people like you and GROUNDHOG are of such value in forums like this as you rightly speak from the head rather than from the heart.

Do you think we are likely to see operators such as Tui and Thomas Cook operating leisure charters to Dubai in the forseeable future from UK regional airports, possibly including CWL?

TOM/TCX To DXB

I really dont think Dubai is the cheap holiday place, most hotels out there are 4/5 Star, and I have visited the Burj Dubai 7 Star Hotel. Are TOM planning to retire the hole fleet of 767's with 787's? As CWL are apperantly not going to get any 787 flights.

MerchantVenturer and Groundhog - thank you both for your comments, I certainly try to help where I can based on my experience!

Can I imagine someone running charters to DXB from Cardiff? Jury is out. Wouldn't rule it in or out. The key thing is what EK do - it is worth remembering that EK is part of the state, part of the Dubai experience, and behaves in a way that enhances the value of the Dubai brand. Its worth is more than its profit; it adds significantly to Dubai PLC's bottom line as a global brand, and is the first thing that many visitors to Dubai see of Dubai. I would bet that EK do group deals to tour operators that are very aggressive to ensure that the Dubai experience is maintained, and so I don't know whether it makes sense to use another carrier.

Also - and this sounds a bit awful - Dubai is trying to attract high end visitors, not the standard 'bucket and spade brigade'. The money is made in the premium cabins, which the likes of Thomsonfly don't have - EK do, and this means that they can offer lower IT group fares.

However - things can change. All the indications are that EK is short of metal, even with its existing orders, and they may well have to say to tour operators - 'we need your visitors, so fill your boots'.

I wouldn't hold your breath though.
