Shaheen Air starting a Leeds-Islamabad and Luton-Islamabad service in February 2008. It was announced at World Travel Market – nothing on their website or LBA’s website though. Perhaps LBA is a little embarrassed/unaware about it. Using A310 aircraft – no announcement as to frequency.

I'd be pleased to see this happen but there's something about this outfit that doesn't seem too credible.

This airline operates five classic 737s on domestic routes at the present. Expansion into international operations will be a big step for them (unless they're teaming up with an existing operator?).

It's website posts the reassuring news that it is operating the five Boeings "successfully".

I'll be pleased to prove wrong but I won't be betting on it becoming a reality.

They own and operate 7 x 737-200's and a leased A320. They already operate international services to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha and a couple of others.

They are a long established company with a bit of a troubled past, but was bought a couple of years ago by TAWA International Canada which seems to have brought a period of sustained growth for the carrier.

They planned to launch services to DSA last year, then swapped to LTN and LBA, but PIA at the 11th hour poached the A310 they were to lease. One would hope they actually secure aircraft this time before they start making big announcements about commencing.

Their website however does not seem to have been updated for over a year or so, something I hope they correct before starting their UK ops.

Bombardier CR7 - I stand corrected.

I foolishly formed my view on their website content that is clearly out of date.

However, the fact that their website is woefully out of date does not inspire confidence.

Yes it good news if Bridgepoint Capital have managed to pull this off.

But you know I’ve just got to ask the next couple of questions!

1.Can an Airbus A310 make Islamabad Direct from LBA’s short runways?

2.Will it be able to do a CATIII onto 32 in low visibility procedures?

The
A310-300
A300-600
757
767-200
777-200
All have similar take off performance.
I don't know for sure but I think all could reach Islamabad if the 757 can.

According tothe ruler on Google earth we're looking at 6,200 km crow-fly so I guess something between 6,500 and 7,000 km is what we're looking at.

Looking at the figures wawkrk posted I think the answer to "can an A310 make it non-stop" is no.

"Perhaps LBA is a little embarrassed/unaware about it. Using A310 aircraft – no announcement as to frequency."
10 DME ARC, maybe LBIA are aware and quite proud but it has been commercially confidential so far. They would not want to shout about something but then see it not happen. Maybe their commercial confidentiality is pretty good, which would be a first in the airline business
"1.Can an Airbus A310 make Islamabad Direct from LBA’s short runways?"
LBIA: remember there is a difference between a direct service and a non-stop flight.

Unless I am mistaken, the flying time is 7h 45. I am guessing therefore it is a direct (ie non stop) flight.

It looks as though the A310-300 could do it non-stop.
But, which version did Shaheen acquire.
Also an interesting comment from the past when the route was being considered at the time.I don't know which airline it was probably PIA.
Ed Anderson stated at a presentation which I attended, that the airport had spoken with Airbus and the conclusion was the A330 would have no problems flying to Islamabad non-stop with a full passenger load from LBA.

I think the route will be very successful because those who will use it are usually seen off by large groups of relatives. When they use Manchester they probably need to hire a bus.

Apparently the well-wishers outnumber the pax by about ten to one. This will be a laugh a minute at LBIA, with the terminal landside grinding to a halt with queues for central screening and those for Check In Hall B overlapping at peak times! With the 'terminal enhancements' it gets better and better!

I must agree with robo 283.
I have flown from the LBA when Swefly were doing the route.
It was bedlam trying to force away through to the departure lounge.
It seemed like every passenger had brought all their family to see them off.
If the new Shaheen flights do become a reality then the same will happen
again.I hope it does become a success and with the catchment area that we have then there is no reason that it shouldn't.Nothing will change until somebody comes up with a sensible way of extending the terminal again.
Not just enlarging the shopping areas. The best option would be to build a new terminal but I think pigs will fly first.

Now I hear no terminal improvements to start before 2009.
I remember being shot down in flames when I commented about the wrong mob buying the airport.
I repeat, what can you do with 70m over 10 years.
I think just re-invest the profits which could be about the same amount over 10 years so are they really going to spend any money before they sell?
