Quite agree tartin tom. As an example the Luton-Malaga route is down to 2 weekly from next week for January and most of February then goes up again in March.
As for Gibraltar the airport is used for many ex-pats just living across the border into Spain - me included - but the one drawback is the problematic weather especially in winter. It is captains only landing as well. Although more handy to use Gib most of the ex-pat brigade who I know prefer to use Malaga as it has very few problems with the weather i.e. full Cat 3 capability. A couple of days in Gib I would suggest is wholly adequate to see the “sights“ unless you are a ship spotter in that case it is like Miami of old for aviation enthusiasts!

Happy New Year to everyone

Think you`ll find that long term parking parking in Gib is a big no-no..Although they are building multi storey car parks near the the new air terminal but AFAIK they are not yet completed. The only other alternative would be La Linea. There is an underground one called Focona which is where all the hire cars are collected from and that is close to the bus station, about 10 mins walk from the border. I`m led to believe that there is another car park opposite the Iberostar Hotel on the Paseo Maritimo which is cheap and has 24 hour security, which I would have thought an essential considering La Linea`s reputation. Otherwise you might want to consider a lift or a taxi or the bus....

Might want to PM Compton 3 Bravo who unlike me uses Gib airport a lot and lives in that area and will have up todate info..

There's a car park just opposite the terminal building. 'bout £5 a day from memory.

Any news from those in the know locally when the new terminal at GIB is likely to open? My understanding is that the proposed entrance/exit to Spanish territory in La Linea is now on hold because of local arguments, but that the main terminal is virtually ready. On a slightly different tack, any news on BA LHR-GIB flights moving to T5C at LHR? T5C again looks to be complete and that the remaining BA flights at T3 (including GIB and AGP) will move there?

Yes, the Mayor of La Linea has been making a nuisance of himself again.

The latest "upset" was that Gibraltar was open for business on Monday 28th Feb, when it was Andalucia Day, a public holiday and La Linea was shut. So there were long queues of traffic on the roads of La Linea, again, for people to get across the border to spend their money there. Seems he saw his rear end again!

He wants to charge all vehicles going into Gib a toll for using his roads.

Airport Opening?

Hi Stevie. Went over the border yesterday and the airport to me does not look like it will be open in May, still working on the outside of the terminal but cannot tell how the inside is progressing. At least they seem to have the aircraft stands ready - no airbridge - just old fashioned walk and climb the stairs. It is beginning to look like a proper airport at long last but the consensus of opinion is that it is rather over the top for half-a-dozen flights a day but it will be a lot better than the shoe box at the moment!
Regards the border issue have not heard anything about problems with the direct link between Spain and the airport. There was an outcry last year when the mayor of La Linea wanted to charge a 5 Euro fee for crossing the border which he was promptly put in his place by the government in Madrid.
There was quite a lot of security yesterday - they even looked at my and my partner's passport - which is very unusual but with the goings on just the over side of the Med I suppose you cannot blame them, they were only doing they job and very polite with it! If I hear any more I can pm you if you like. Cheers C3B
PS: There was four nice RAF Hawks on the military side which was a pleasant surprise.

BA will not be vacating LHR T3 when T5C is open in a couple of months. BA has commercial reasons to maintain a presence in T3, not least after the big investment it has made in Galleries lounges in T3. I imagine GIB will continue to operate from T3 with T5C being used to reduce bussing to current T5 flights.

Once T5C is up and running BA plan to transfer GIB, LIS and VIE to T5 from T3. This was originally planned for MAY/JUN11. It is now thought this change will take place at the end of the S11 timetable

BA's flights to BKK, BCN, HEL, MAD, SIN and SYD will remain at T3 due to there codeshare agreements with AY, IB and QF.

Just flew out of there yesterday and anyone expecting to use the new terminal at Gib this June will I think be disappointed (self included) its a building site still on the inside. Speaking to staff they reckon it will be useable about September and fully open towards the end of this year.

That said, this is an election year on the Rock, so things might yet still happen

Mind you they need to get some better ground staff the ones they have are better suited to a circus. They havent a clue how to turn an aircraft round. Just as we all all turned up to board they removed the rear steps so everyone went to the front ones, then with 30 people left to board they put the steps back...cue chaos and thats leaving out how they managed to cock up boarding the bus from the terminal.

Think they need to cross the airfield and get the RAF guys to show them how its done

Glad you agree with me Paully about the new terminal regarding the opening date. There is also the ''problem'' of the direct entry/exit to and from the airport to Spain which I here has not been fully sorted out yet.
Also have to agree about Gibair the handling agent - my daughter had a problem with a bag a couple of weeks ago on a Monarch flight which was accepted without a problem at Luton but not by a rather obnoxius lady at check-in (it was exactly the same aircraft on both sectors) and my daughter was not the only one having a ''problem'' with Gibair. A letter has been sent to Monarch regarding the Gibair attitude but unfortunately they are the only handling company at the airport.

Gibair

Think I know the lady you mean, she was `working`yesterday.....Total muppets

Re the Spanish side it appears that Sanchez has had his arm twisted and he is at least now talking to Aena but knowing him the entry point will still be years away..shame

Bit optomistic there Mind you if you start piling anymore workload onto the Gibair lot, things WILL come to standstill although the delays will be more bearable in the new terminal
