However should the MT section or others be crossing the runway with a vehicle...then the barriers are sometimes put down to allow for the easy crossing.

Yeah this is bad news - at least on first reading. From a Gibraltar point of view it will terrible to loose through checkin opportunities for boarding cards and baggage all the way to final destination when flying with BA. Be that to another UK destination or onwards trans altlantic or inter continental. Can only hope BA regain the route and operate from Heathrow.
Looks as if its gonna be more trips to AGP or MAD for mainstream carriers to allow painless onward connections.

With the EZY takeover of GB Airways, maybe the GIB govt will put some incentives in place to atract the like of BD to offer connections on to other destinations. Im sure a BD flight to LHR would work.
ha ha....man friday - you are so cynical....
Yes it will be interesting if it comes to that....oh and also how ATC deal with more late arrivals should there ever be "out of hours" flights!

Panorama: "Serious miscalculation" of the demand that existed on the Madrid route
----------------------------------
AIRPORT WORKS PREMATURE
“If the passenger traffic is not there and the demand is not there, this puts in doubt the considerable investment that the Government is going to make in a new air terminal and ancillary works. It is premature for the Government to continue with this investment to service a projected number of flights which may or may not now materialize. It needs to be said that on present evidence the prospects do not look very good,” said Dr Garcia.

Nice story on the Gib Chronic website:
HAWK –EYE HARRY FINDS THE FOD
While on duty as an Air Traffic Switchboard Operator at Gibraltar Airport, Harry Walsh looked out of his window and saw what seemed to be a small metallic object on Winston Churchill Avenue, over 150 metres away. By this time, the barriers were down and an aircraft was on its final approach to the runway.
After asking the air traffic controllers to try to delay the landing, Harry sent a vehicle to collect the object – which turned out to be a piece of a scooter’s exhaust pipe.
This jagged piece of metal could easily have burst the tyre of the landing aircraft.
“It was lying right in the middle of the runway,” said Harry. “But we’re always aware of the dangers of FOD (Foreign Object Debris).”
Harry has now been presented with a Flight Safety award by the RAF Station Commander. “Harry did very well to spot this piece of metal – it’s certainly not his job to look out for FOD,” said Wing Commander Chris Purkiss. “He was looking into the sun and the metal had been blackened by exhaust fumes. But I’m not surprised by Harry’s response – it shows how keen our staff are to maintain flight safety.”
Well done Harry!
Meanwhile on the front page of Panorama:
"More than 20 incidents at Gibraltar airport"

bloody good spot by harry,
shame the company is happy to operate without a switchboard assistant on other occasions because we dont have enough staff and " theres not enough profit in the contract" to employ others

You can't beat Panorama for the BEST inaccurate reporting....
Mmmm...hasn't been any recent incidents of footballs that somehow manage to escape the close playing area and bounce down the active just as A320 thuds down just past the piano keys.

Airlines get a discount
The Gibraltar government will be introducing a new financial model for commercial airline operations as from 30 March 2008 to coincide with the start of the airline summer schedule and with the take-over of GB airways by easyjet.
The current landing, navigation and parking fees will be discounted by 70% to all commercial airline operators on new and existing routes. The current Air Passenger Duty will remain at £10 per passenger.
