I've just checked, and in July 2006 MK had 13 flights to Manston, compared to 2 in July 2007.

The figures show that the introduction of services by EgyptAir and Cargolux has had a big impact on throughput.

BTW, the Infratil report also said "...and Kent’s attraction of a number of new carriers bodes well for the future."

Further good news. Sky Wings has been dumped by Seguro/Kent Escapes, and BMI is now doing the flights.

James,
though you may find it hard to believe...
The anouncements by Infratil are on Infratils main website in the announcements section

There is a press release on the KIA website today about the change of airline to BMI.

Thought I'd draw attention to the clean-up that's taking place, especially alongside the road past the freight area. Weeds and old fence posts have been removed, and grass cut. The whole place has a business-like feel to it.

Shame that useful car-parking and meet'n'greet areas near the terminal have been closed off in the pursuit of "security". This resulted today in cars being left unattended in very unsecure spots whilst their drivers went into the terminal to meet passengers from the Faro flight.

Now come on catflaps, if you are a true "anorak" with binoculars and parka, you will be prepared to stay all day with notebook, flask and butty box to see what MDIS was talking about.

I note that BMI made their first Faro run yesterday, pity it arrived 1H20 late, never mind, MSE helped make up some time since it was only 32M late leaving.

Sorry Catflaps

I should have said Thursday and Saturday.

As I am sure you are now aware BMI have taken over from Skywings, and this will then be taken over by Futura.

It was announced officially yesterday but I did warn of a development 5 days ago and there is more to come..

Another major enquiry in today.

A change of Seguro aircraft?

Is that it?

Blimey MDIS, I'm glad I didn't go to Manston just for that.

Perhaps you had an ulterior motive.

You are the mad Canterbury axe murderer and you wanted to get us all in one place so you could kill us all.

Axe Murderer

I wouldn't want to kill you all off as this would ruin the opportunity to say "I told you so" when MSE is a success.

However, I must admit when you look at it as just a new operator for Seguro it is a bit disappointing. When I posted the news initially all I knew was BMI were going to operate from MSE but didnt know in what capacity.

There are other interested parties including a multi weekly long haul destination

MDIS

I really did not hold my breath on the Friday/Saturday MSE statement.

I was on my watchtower (40 foot of scaffolding with panoramic views over Ramsgate and Manston).

All i obsevered was a C130, the BMI, Oasis and Egypt Air but then again it could have been an area 51 flight into MSE?

Are the military flights counted in the freight figures i do hope not?

Why waste your breath?

You seem to be using a well thought out method on market research? Are you really trying to suggest that a company make a marketing strategy based on your sceintific analysis of 'meeting a few friends down the town'? I suppose Pfizer just wander around sandwich asking a few people before deciding which drugs to proceed with or that Hornby march up and down Margate seafront asking visitors what the next christmas best seller will be! Your post offers nothing of any substance, you simply reinforce the stereotype blogger that this board has a knack of attracting

I enquired today and Kent International Holidays will be out in Sept for 2008.
Was also told very few holidays are booked at this time, School holidays time holidays, Most book just after xmas told. Some long haul stuff books well in advance not at the cheap end of the market agent said.

From Infratil's website...

Infratil has a long term view on KIA and is prepared to absorb operating losses for 3 to 4 years.
They bought KIA in 2005, so they have one year left if absorbing operating losses for 3 years, and two years left if absorbing operating losses for 4 years?

Lets just hope that something comes about in time!

Cloud 9-

Paying passenger interest at MSE is minimal, and freight tends to yo-yo up and down at a low level of operations.

Manston continues to be the "lame duck" of Infratil's assets, and I doubt anybody with half a brain expects it to reach an operating surplus within the next couple of years.

That said, I have come to realise that for many players in the aviation game, operating as a successful business is not necessarily the prime objective.

For some wealthy types, airlines and airports are essentially toys, and they are more interested in putting aircraft into the sky than making money.

If MSE can attract a string of owners prepared to spend, say, 30 million quid over five years each, we may well find the airport is still here, and operating in the same manner 20 years from now.

Interesting Hypothosis DeeDave,

Infratril have bought, invested heavily and got nothing for their money.

Yes, there are one or two regular customers who pop up each week and the possibility remains of engineering organisations being attracted to relocate there by terms and conditions which would never be offered to anyone else anywhere in the UK.
But the facts are that Manston has little hope of any financial return, there isn't a hope in hell of Infratril getting back the money they've put in back and to be honest, the same applies at both Prestwick and Lubeck.

Prestwick was a very large white elephant for a long time, it absorbed an alarming amount of investment each day and still does, perhaps it makes an operating profit but I would wager that the owners never did get the money back which they initially invested and the losses they absorbed to attract and to keep Ryanair operating from there wil be written off.
Admittedly, there's a lot going on at Prestwick, but as one who keeps a track of ongoing events, what goes on today doesn't pay for yesterday.

Lubeck is the German equivilant of Manston, the only difference being that the German authorities have a lot of questions to answer about the "funding" theyve given the airport to develop and operate on a day to day basis, if I were a local tax payer I'd be extremely peeved that so much local revenue has been put into such a hopeless case.

If Manston is indeed the "lame duck" of Infratril's assets, the rest of company doesn't hold up to close scrutiny and I wonder how much longer things can continue.

It's all very well having local supporters having good things to say and being positive, but as a very experienced outsider looking in, it would appear that your lenses are somewhat rose tinted.

Hope I am wrong.
