LH
revo
Lufthansa have been to press many times in the last year spouting on
about UK regional expansion but had failed to deliver until NCL-DUS was increased & BRS -FRA (and a short DUS-Newquay season) was announced.
I am not surprised in the slightest at BHX-HAM except for the daft
schedule, assuming that is the final schedule. It might only be part-
loaded (one can dream). However there are connections via DUS, FRA & MUC in the evening but still a little surprising.
LH have also been to press claiming they intend to do more flights from
EDI and it would not be a surprise if BRS get another destination.
I assume they have or will consider BHX-TXL & BHX-STR but whether
they see the light of day, I have no idea.
Fingers crossed for not another BHX-CGN

The LH HAM-BHX schedule is probably due to the curfew at HAM from 2300-0600 local time all year round. Not sure LH fancy the extra cost of a nightstopping a/c and either 1 crew on split duty, or 2 crews, at BHX just yet. They might be trying the water; after all, flybe already fly the route (usually on an EMB-145, although I have had the pleasure of being on a EMB-195 a couple of times).

New LH HAM-BHX
When BAR and BACON flew this route it was 12 times a week and despite the often recorded, poor passenger figures in terms of numbers there was a very high proportion of high yeild business passengers on this route. You only have to check the Flybe fares to see how high the yeailds on this route are.
The arrival time is excellent for German originating business meetings in the city and surrounds. I don't think that this flight will be attractive to BHX originating transfer traffic as LH doesn't have a huge presence at HAM. It is much better timed than the Flybe middle of the day schedule now offered.
I wondered when this route would be considered, IMO I think a double daily CRJ would knock Flybe off this route.

Anybody seen the new EK Birmingam to the rest of the world TV drive?
After seeing the advert, I commented on the very good impact it made. He agreed and started going on about how it will be the new 'world airline'. So...after he had finished, I asked him if he could give me prices for flights to Los Angeles...apparently not the COMPLETE rest of the world!

runway extension
The extension is to allow planes to get to places like the west coast of USA.
The market for such direct flight could be served by aircraft like the 787.
If this is 50% plastic and uses 20% less fuel than the current generation of planes then does it undermine the need a runway extension at BHX?
Going for better planes would seem to be more viable then going for a longer runway as any extension is only useful to 5% of traffic in 2012.

How would you propose to get the 787 to LAX for example? Having to tech stop would kill any advantage of offering the flights. With the current length of the runway the chances of a 787 getting to the West coast of the USA with anything near a viable payload are negligable, if they exist at all. The 777's that currently operate out of here take up most of the runway for a 7 hour flight, even with the reduced fuel burn you still need the extension to be able to go that far.
The extension also allows current flights to use max derate more often and be at a much greater altitude crossing the airfield boundry, the result being less noise for the neighbours (with the exception of Catherine de Barnes). Saving fuel and reducing noise are two things that I seriously doubt will cross the minds of the nimby's who be up in arms

Runway
The airport will be looking east rather than west I would have thought.
Even with the more efficient fuel burn of new aircraft I can't see LAX
been via for many many years, if ever.
Vancouver summer operations such as Zoom might be viable and perhaps a weekly Vagas or such like but it is the other way where the potential is.
Also remember the thomsonfly Cancun tech stops each week at present so
there will be some advantages westbound.
Lets hope it all happens as quick as possible even if it disrupts my
journey to work .

Not a bad start, 8 days in and already 2 services announced and a runway extension. Whatever next a long-haul service east and west, well you never know at bhx do we.
