DURHAM TEES VALLEY AIRPORT - 4
Housing is being far too pessimistic in my opinion. Airports will continue to be a critical asset for some time to come, to close one which has full certificate from CAA for civil pax flights would be short sighted. How many more would be likely to get the go ahead for new builds in the future? I would suspect very few if any. I know Peel may come across that way and despite my strong views regarding SZD and DSA i do not think they would consider redevelopment at MME.
It has similar constraints to HUY where catchment area potentialy quite large but other airports are very competative, it is hard to find an airline to which it would fit in with the structure of their operations.
Hopefully the fuel situation may be resolved and a return to airline confidence and subsequent growth will follow. If not i think MME will be in a far better situation than even DSA in a few years when flying becomes again a luxury for the elite.

Ryanair always get what they want, otherwise they pull out (Cardiff a fine example). So either they will pull out, open a base, or as I and most others suspect nothing will change proving the rumour to be a load of

MME does not fit the profile for Easyjet.
It does fit the profile for Ryanair but they are compressing their operations in the short term .They have long term views which may include MME in their plans but what you are talking about are medium term ( 1 to 3 year) plans and these are in complete chaos at the moment with all airlines including Ryanair. No one knows where the oil price is going next year and what this may mean for air travellers in the medium term. In the long term air travel will grow because we will get used to higher prices. Several years ago when petrol breeched the £1 a gallon ceiling the analysts predicted the end of the world as we know it. We are now approaching £5.50 a gallon. Enough said I think.

Excuse the naivety, but why doesn't easyJet fit the profile for MME yet Ryanair does?
Again, perhaps an inexperienced comment, but let's say for arguements sake that easyJet did move their entire operation to MME from NCL. I would have though easyJet would still be able to draw passengers from the Tyne and Wear (and perhaps some from Northumberland) whilst being in a better position geographically to have a go at North Yorkshire and the like?
Is MME's problem that there are low cost operators to the north and west and there isn't an obvious airline (other than FR in my opinion) to fill the gap?

Ryanair base?
I think we can all dream on. Although DTV does indeed fit the Ryanair profile, they do seem to have been going for the larger airports of late (EDI, BHX and BRS). This would suggest that NCL would be the more likely base. But I think before either airport gets too excited, look at the evidence or recent route closures and you can conclude that the North East is well down the list of Ryanair priorities.

Ryanair bases
I think there are likely to be a lot of airports in European countries other than the UK that are on Ryanair's 'potential future base' list. And many of them are probably a lot higher up the list than MME or NCL.
As an aside, how are the prices of fuel in other Euro countries compared with ours? I know it is going upo across the board but i bet those places are not so heavily taxed. Is this where likely growth will be until we see some leveling out of our prices?

oslo flight
There is one tomorrow night at 1930 and I was in the garden tonight when something flew over in the "wrong" direction which was about that time. I was sorting out my cherry tree which appears to be dying from the bottom up at the time and didn't lookup.I would be gratefull for any advice on the cherry tree if anyone knows the answer.

Tonight's Oslo flight was about the sixth or seventh charter in about two weeks, and yes there is another tomorrow night. Not sure how long they're going on for, but they're operated by SAS Norge's B73Gs.

Just wondering what the score is with all the scandanavian 737s appearing on a weekly basis?....is teeside and north yorkhire a popular place to visit for our scandanavian friends.....currently residing in thornaby and noticed there was a large group of tourists exploring the old thornaby airfield sites last week!...makes me wonder if a year round service would be a viable option.

They were flying last year too at about the same time of year - not sure if it applies to them all but certainly the ones I have worked have had on a brass band!!
Jeepers!
I will stand and salute! I live in Eaglescliffe, and worked for SAS '85-'94.
They made me redundant, having offered me a job in London, saying that there was little business up here to support me in a sales and marketing role.
A couple of years later, they opened NCL-CPH with Cimber Air. Which subsequently closed.
So, doubt that it's viable, but, then again, I never would have dreamed of MME-WAW being viable...
Does anyone recall BD using a SAS DC9-21 on MME-LHR, circa 1994. It worked for a couple of weeks shortly before I left, almost as a divine gesture.

SAS Flights
This happened last year, although dont recall the flights being as many and as frequent. I think last year it was to do with some sort of educational exchange, UK pupils there, Scandinavian pupils here - something to do with town twinning. It was around the same time so presume its the same thing. Not sure if all the flights in and out are operating with Pax, they might be one way charters, flying one direction empty? Dont think flights are sold to the general public.

Only the first one out was empty (positioned out using a CNO9xxx callsign) whereas all others have had pax on inbound and outbound.
Yes there have been more than ever this year I think, certainly don't remember us having this many last year!
Whoever is behind them they are certainly very well used

SAS Flights
The SAS flights don't appear on their website either by destination or by flight no so they are obviously private charters and not something to get too excited about.
