Peel Holdings already own the St. George Hotel, so I wonder what the plans are for that. Possibly knock it down and extend the car park?

Airport bosses are confident ...are ploughing ahead with plans to boost annual passenger numbers from 750,000 to three million by 2015.
As said, ever more hpye 400%!!! in next 5 years. Kerry & her team needs to start working a bit harder.
One of the possible scenarios at the LHC in Geneva, is that a small black hole may be created, or even a worm hole to one of the other 11 dimensions theoretically predicted by Professor Hawkins and his chums. There is no need for this as it is clear from the above that the Directors of Peel holdings have already discovered the worm hole and are happily living in the 6th Dimension running the Airport through a gap in the space -time continuum

At the end of the day Kerry needs to realise that without an attractive product then you need airlines & an expanding market as an appropriate trading environment to forecast any positive growth, and that her ridiculous rantings actually have no substance whatsoever in the current market conditions. With projections by those that should have a better idea than most forecasting a significant number of further airline failures by the end of this year, then perhaps a more relevant question that Ms Quinn ought to be considering is how many airports are forecast to close..... .Indeed I wouldn't be in the least surprised if she is not spending the majority of her time ingraciating herself to those high in the Peel organisation. It would go someway to explain why she really hasn't a clue how to run an airport.

bmi

Well I think it's the best we can expect to hear that bmi regional will open a pilot base as surely this is a medium term plan as opposed to just for winter? Cannot see LBA and MME both operating a base as we currently see at LBA but possibly it could add another regional route ex. MME?

Although the MME-LHR route's axe has been writing on the wall for a long time, atleast there must be still some demand for the route for bmi to keep it open as, let's face it, now is the perfect time for airlines to cut routes.

On other news, heard MME helped out with Futura passengers flying from HUY to MAH-surely a welcome boost to passenger numbers?????

Looking to BMI,an airline group that has persistantly "kicked DTV in the teeth" over the years for any form of salvation reflect desperate times indeed !

It is reported in the Hull Daily Mail that the Menorca flights from HUY will all go from MME until the end of the Summer season,so more passengers for you and less for HUY,as if we needed this loss.

Hello I have been following this forum for quite some time and given the recent news, decided to finally make my first post, does anyone think that due to the XL collapse DTV may pick up a few more passangers and actually benefit from this sad affair ?

GSM - Summer 2009

In tonights Evening Gazette, it says

"DTVA is still in discussions with budget carrier flyglobespan over its summer 2009 flight schedule, which is expected to announcer "shortly"".

The same artical also says that Peel Airports Group may bid for Gatwick airport.

Interesting

XL doom . Silver lining?

With the demise of XL and the brightening of prospects in 2010 I feel that MME is ideally placed for massive expansion.
People are now looking for ATOL protected holidays and MME are placed in the position of having almost unlimited landing and take off slots with a good runway and weather and a good transport infrastructure. If I was in charge of marketing on a percentage of takings basis I would be ordering my bungalow in the Bahamas now.
There is no such thing as bad news...only opportunities for success.
Sad as I am for the people who have lost their jobs in the XL fiasco I would be quivering with expectation to run my passenger numbers and prices past Airtours and Tui

I'd say MME has always been ideally placed for massive expansion, problem is, we don't have the necessary brains at the top level to perform such an operation.

Still, Peel are often said to have a rabbit ready to pull out of the hat, perhaps this is it?

From the Northern Echo:

AIRPORT chiefs have moved to allay fears about the future of holiday flights from the North-East, after another operator reduced services. Thomson became the latest firm to pull routes from Durham Tees Valley Airport, near Darlington, after it announced that it will no longer run flights to Alicante in Spain from next year.

The news comes after Hungarian carrier Wizz Air cancelled flights between Durham Tees Valley and Warsaw. Another operator, Flyglobespan, has yet to announce services for the new year, leading to speculation that it could be the next to pull out.

One holiday maker, Allan Carter, from Newton Aycliffe, said: "Why are all the flights being cut back? I go to Alicante regularly, but Thomson are not going to fly there after this year. Everybody is in the dark about what is happening."

Rising fuel prices and the effects of the global economic slump have hit the air industry hard, leading to the collapse of travel giant XL last week, and uncertainty over the future of a number of prestigious operators including the Italian carrier Alitalia.

Mr Carter, 73, added: "Not so long ago we were being told how wonderful Durham Tees Valley was and how the owners had huge plans for it. It is great to have an airport so nearby. It’s so convenient to get there. If it was not there we would have to use Newcastle instead. That could end up costing you £80 there and back in taxi fares - maybe more."

A spokesman for airport owners Peel Airports said: "We can understand that regular customers do become accustomed to using particular airlines and operators but the travel industry is subject to continuing developments and changes in response to the market - notably the move from traditional charter holidays to flights with low-cost airlines. While Thomson will not be operating to Alicante next summer, a more flexible scheduled service will be operated by Ryanair. We are also in continuing discussions with Flyglobespan on their plans for next summer. Peel Airports have made very clear their commitment to the expansion and development of all aspects of the business at Durham Tees Valley, investing heavily over the past three years and with ambitious development plans for the future, including, for example, major terminal improvements and the recently announced proposal for a new hotel on the site."

Can someone enlighten me as to what investment Peel have put into the airport in the last three years.

First of all Thomson never planned to serve ALC next year - all they're doing is a weekly PMI and thats all thats ever been on sale for next summer (for the last few months since it was released).

As for Peel investing - I think you'll find the terminal frontage (brushed metal), as well as some money airside to fund red stop bars, lead on/lead off lights and stuff like that. Whether they were forced to have these by the CAA or not I don't know but either way they've put them in.

I think you'll find Peel haven't spent a penny on DTVA yet, the frontage got paid by one of the regional development agencies, the new access road was paid for by I think it was the Highways Agency and the airside works such as lighting etc, came out of the airports own pot.

Since when have brains at the top equated with success.?
Drive and enthusiasm with the right contacts are what it takes to transform virtually any business into a success not brains at the top. Look at the banks and insurance failures of late. The more brains you have the more chance you have of out thinking yourself. Give me drive and enthusiasm anytime.
If anyone in Peel/DTV Marketing dares to identify themseves on this website then give us a sense of your thoughts and direction because I can smell huge amounts of money if you get in there first.
