I think its only a temporary withdrawl, rather than a total abandonment, till later in the year when they will re-submit a revised plan for Carlisle.

Paarmo,

There is little comparison between the Carlisle proposal and what might be achievable at DTV.

You are right in saying that Stobbarts do not want to get involved in a long, drawn out Public Enquiry (who can blame them) but their business plan did, on the public information available, make some sense.

The locale, the present trucking operations, the rail freight hub all combine to make some sense; add that to the total lack of any commercial air services beteeen Glasgow and Blackpool (and then Manchester) and there is some logic to having a decent runway, a freight hub and a small, modern terminal (compared to the current passenger facility, and I use the word 'facility' loosely).

Sadly DTV has none of the attributes that Carlisle offers for this type of development; what DTV does have is not fully utilised and how the management of the airport plan to boost DTV's market share will be interesting to observe.

In the current market, with the instability in the price of oil, I really can not see a new carrier planning any substantial route development at DTV, sad as that might be.

I would have thought that DTV and Carlisle have a lot in common, DTV has a rail line on its door step and good links to the A1M lots of space and a sparce local population (probably why pax services don't seem to do to well) you run 24 hour ops without too much noise

Not to mention one of the UK's largest ports with all the associated railfreight inter-change and hauliers. So there is actually on the freight side of things a fair bit in common in terms of being able to develop a freight operation, if you wanted or could!!!

Good news! Can now book Warsaw up until end of March 2009. Fri and Mon morning flights from November.

Also anyone know what is happening to GSM at MME after January 2009? With hardly any IT flights next summer from MME are they going to expand?

Good news regarding Warsaw, but as to GSM; they may expand due to lack of ITs as you say, but since we're in the middle of the credit crunch thing, whatever the it is, they may downsize as well.

GSM should (not for certain) be returning with at least a based a/c for S09 maybe 1 or 2 new routes supposidly there are to be many new destinations from GLA & EDI so maybe MME get a piece of cake along with ABZ.

Should they return there will be ither a 737-600 based or maybe a newer 737-700 because the main reason MME W08 schedule ends in Januray is becuase there disposing of the older 737-300's to hopefully be replaced with 737-700 & 800's.

Will have a definate answer for your question when they release the S09 programme in Aug/Sep.

I think that MME is at least as well served with road links as Carlisle. The A1M is easily accessable both North and South within 15 mins from the terminal. I am not sure that rail and sea links add a great deal to the type of freight which aircraft carry which tends to be high value low weight as opposed to the high weight/bulk which the other's carry. But it does add to the sense of vibrancy of the area. Middlesbrough in particular is pushing itself forward under Ray Mallon as a burgeoning and vibrant commercial and retail centre.
Perhaps another renaming exercise as Middlesbrough International?. It would also give some sense to MME.

Road links

It seems to me that the MME airport is far closer to the motorway than LBA is to any motorway and that doesn't seem to hold them back?

Paarmo and others
The A1 is at full capacity, and last year the Highways Agency re-affirmed that by putting the blocks on any fresh industrial developments around the A19 and A1 corridors in and around Tyneside. To develop a freight hub you need massive input of high value goods and a similar output of imports. That needs road connections far more sophisticated than we have at present, which means more money for Traffic impact measures, junction improvements , signalling etc etc.The idea of a rail link into the airport won't work because of the capacity issues surrounding the East Coast mainline and the mountain of reports and promises of action on that issue have come to nothing in the last decade.Add to that the oil price, the credit crunch and the fiorthcoming recession and damn right I've got the blues.
As for Mallon and Middlesbrough??? as we say around here "yerjokinarnyer"

Does anyone know why our last four Thomas Cook charter flights (2x Iberworld and 2x Futura) have gone straight past us into Glasgow despite having our flight numbers?

It doesn't reflect very well on the airport though if the flights were supposed to operate all summer and the last x number of rotations have not operated? Obviously not the airport's fault, but the average Joe Public may not see it that way!

One just needs to look at the arrivals / departures for next 24 hrs -18.30 & this says it all. Average one arrival & departure every 2 hours and no IT flights, only quasi IT flights are a pair of GSM rotations & this is a weekend approaching peak summer season. Hate to say but it's all rather pathetic, as ever the 'the girls' are doing a tremendous job.. not!

I hear on the vine that baby are planning on a return to MME with W patterns thro JER and that LBA,BFS,EDI & GLA will get the same, short flights high loads of checked baggage and 50+ something (age) unlikley to be hit by the credit crunch and don't fancy the Euro?

What's the problem..? are you suggesting that there is a shortage of baggage handlers at DTV, surely those you have are not overworked ??
