Some good news!
WW have increased frequencies on the MAN route, adding an 0805 departure to MAN on Monday mornings (this will be popular with business, I expect) and an additional flights on Friday afternoon also.
Its not much, but in the current climate, not bad I suppose!

If true, hope the negotiations come to something. Boy, does Cork need a boost at the moment. Just days away now from the end of the routes from Cork to Prague, Bratislava, East Midlands and the ending of the Ryanair jet service from Prestwick but which is, thankfully, being saved by Aer Arann taking on the route with ATR equipment.
Have heard that heads have been quite down in some quarters up at Cork of late so any boost would be welcome. However, the bizjet traffic has been very good of late at Cork with even a good share of long haul corporate traffic flying east and west on the North Atlantic to and from Cork. There was even one day this week, I think, Monday, when all of the stands of the original Cork Airport had bizjets parked up and not one airliner amongst them. Quite a feat in itself. Small steps but welcome none the less.

Connectivity to another major European hub would be very good for ORK. Hopefully the hubs concerned are not AMS or CDG. Probably unlikely anyway, as the CAA could give much better deals to the likes of LH or LH from their hubs.

New Cork Route
It's not an existing route Brian,
Up to late 2006 Cork had excellent connections through Prague and Budapest with CSA and Malev. The CSA service had excellent loads and yields from 2003 to 2005 but then came under pressure from Aerlingus, Malev.Wizz and Central Wings and they pulled out in early 2007.
All of the competition with the exception of the WIZZ service to Katowice is now gone so there should be room for a hub carrier in central europe.
However there is no guarantee that the negotiations will be successful due to the current economic climate.
There is also speculation that a low cost carrier may begin a service to a Central European City from Cork in 2009.

EI -Rennes
Can't see Rennes being any better. An A320 just too big to fill.
Will also impact on RE loads to Lorient and Brest should they re-instate these routes for Summer 09.
Two airlines serving three airports in the north west corner of France doesn't seem sustainable.

Cork-Rennes will probaby have low loads like JER, but its cheaper to operate to, and takes off at 13.50, and is back in ORK by 16.50, so is a short hop, so keeping aircraft utilisation up, rather than have the aircraft sit idle, or arrive back to ORK early in the evening

Renne is an interesting choice. Maybe looking to turn the screw at RE, but I can't really see why, unless they fancy a smaller aircraft for using on UK-Ireland routes.
I'm surprised they have not tried BRU instead. Sun and Tues flights would be reasonably ok for city-breakers, etc.

Renne certainly is a very interesting choice ...... The most recent additions to the ORK route network are routes that I wouldn't immediately think of ... Lisbon, Geneva for example.
Personally speaking, maybe with the exception of Lisbon, I can't see these routes being massively successful.
EI dont seem to be focusing on safe bet routes in Cork. I sure EI could do well operating a daily LGW route (I know they'd be competing with FR but I definately think there is sufficient demand - At one point there was nearly 6 flights a day to Gatwick with FR and EZ), or doing a 4 weekly trip to Scotland.
Working in Cork myself, I know a lot of the business community would relish a 2 weekly (Mon/Fri) BRU route.
I've a feeling Venice would be a very popular weekend break destination from ORK

Jetmagic used to operate from Cork to Brussels, but it didn't attract huge numbers. Their most popular routes were the ones to Nice and Barcelona. It would appear that they served one useful purpose: they demonstrated to Aer Lingus that there was a market for direct connections from Cork to mainland Europe.

Cork City breakers
There's definetely a need for a new city break destination now that Prague and Budapest are gone. Lisbon could fit the bill. I understand that local travel agents strongly recomended it to Aerlingus.

Obviously, Rennes would attract initial route support at the Cork end (unlike Jersey, which was operated by RE too recently to qualify), but that's a temporary benefit. Are charges in Rennes much lower than Jersey?

Route support
I'm not sure if Rennes qualifies for route support given that they are dropping two Jersey services to make room for the flights.
I also heard that UK handling company Menzies Aviation recently viewed the facilities at Cork.

I imagine that Menzies had something to do with the EI contract which is up for grabs. EI use Menzies extensively in the UK. They are OK at LHR, but passible at best in MAN. Certainly not a patch on the guys currently to be found in ORK, who are, without exception, an excellent bunch, in my experience.
